Police ramp up efforts to curb drug-impaired driving on 4/20 weekend
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — You might see some extra police patrols on the streets this holiday weekend, and we're not talking about the Easter holiday. April 20 is of course, known as 4/20: a day celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts. The Governor's Traffic Safety committee is reminding drivers that it is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis. State and local police are targeting drug-impaired drivers in an enforcement campaign which began Friday and runs through Sunday, News 8 spoke with Monroe County's Stop DWI Program Coordinator about the effects marijuana has on drivers. 'We do see that impairment can look like a slower reaction time,' Lindsay Tomidy said. 'If you've ever seen someone high, you can guess how it would be difficult to control a 3,000 lb vehicle, and we expect the consumption to be higher across this entire weekend.' Driving under the influence of cannabis could lead to an arrest, a DWAI charge, or worse. Designating a sober driver or using rideshare services is encouraged this weekend. Mattydale man arrested after leading a police pursuit in stolen vehicle
NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A Mattydale man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a car, taking police on a chase and crashing the car into a home in Syracuse. Around 8:40 p.m. on April 7, a caller reported to 911 that their 2018 Chrysler Pacifica was stolen from the Dollar General Parking lot in the Village of North Syracuse. North Syracuse Police officers were sent to the scene and sent out a 'be on the lookout' for the vehicle. According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, around 9 p.m. that night, a deputy patrolling near Wolf Street saw the car matching the description. The deputy then attempted a traffic stop by turning on their emergency lights, but with no luck, a pursuit began. 'The deputy pursued the suspect, with additional support from other Sheriff's Deputies and North Syracuse Police,' said the sheriff's office. The pursuit came to an end when 44-year-old Sean Hill, of Mattydale, crashed into the front porch of a home on Court Street in Syracuse, causing minor damage. After a foot chase, deputies and officers were able to arrest Hill. He was taken into custody by North Syracuse Police officers and charged with multiple traffic violations, grand larceny in the 4th degree, and unlawful fleeing of a police officer. Hill was also given several traffic tickets and charged with a DWAI Drugs/Alcohol and aggravated unlicensed operation in the 1st degree. He had several active arrest warrants. Plea hearing will be held for former Greece official on Thursday
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Former Greece Deputy Town Supervisor Michelle Marini is expected to make a plea Thursday. Marini was charged with third-degree felony corrupting the government, three counts of fourth-degree felony grand larceny, and official misconduct. She initially pleaded not guilty to these charges. Prosecutors say the charges Marini faces are connected to the development and construction of the Greece Community and Senior Center. She was also accused of tracking a Greece resident using a GPS system. Marini was accused of misconduct in a lawsuit filed against the Town of Greece. The lawsuit claims she allegedly spread false information in relation to a former police chief's DWAI crash in 2021. Two other lawsuits — filed by Ryan Murphy and Tina Bachman — also accuse the Town of Greece of tracking them. Stay with News 8 WROC as we continue to follow this developing story.
