State-of-the-art technologies available at Harbour View Medical Center
SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The new Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center, a project two years in the making, is set to open next week and will offer new state-of-the-art technologies for patients in Hampton Roads.
The hospital will be the first in the region to feature 'smart patient' rooms to ensure privacy, comfort and safety.
'The patient is always first and is on the forefront of our mind when it comes to talking about what is most important,' said Kristen McSorley, vice president of nursing at Harbour View Medical Center. 'It's more about, how do we better communicate with our patients? But also, for the workflow of the providers, the nurses, we actually reviewed input from our staff. We had them come in throughout the building process to allow us to provide them with a room [and ask them] where do you want to see things put in a room that allows for a better workflow?'
The rooms will include privacy-controlled glass, integrated sensor technology in patient beds, and AI integration.
'So the AI is built into the ceiling, and with that comes the ability for us to add an extra layer of safety,' McSorley said. 'So we do have a sensor that allows us to be notified if a patient is laid on their side too long and it's time to turn. The other feature that we saw earlier was the patient safety camera. That is a live feed needed for patient safety to ensure that they're not getting out of the bed too soon. That way it gives us the ability to get in, see what the needs are that the patient may have and make sure that we meet them before any harm is done.'
Harbour View Medical Center will also be one of two locations in Hampton Roads to use the Da Vinci Series 5, the latest in surgical robotics.
'We are implementing truly state-of-the-art technology that is all designed around keeping our patients safe, keeping them informed about their care, and ensuring they have access to the services when and where they need them,' said Andy Spicknall, Harbour View Medical Center president.
