Brighton have confirmed the signing of South Korean teenager Yoon Doyoung from K-League side Daejeon Hana Citizen. The 18-year-old winger will remain with Daejon until the end of June before joining Albion for the start of their pre-season. Yoon joins the south coast club on a deal until 2030. Technical director David Weir said, 'Yoon is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in Asia and we're very pleased he's chosen to become a Brighton & Hove Albion player. "We will be watching closely as he continues his development in the South Korean League through until the summer, and then look to find a suitable loan for him next season.' 📸 Bryn Lennon - 2024 Getty Images

S. Korean teenager Yoon Do-young signs for Brighton & Hove Albion

South Korean teenage winger Yoon Do-young has signed for the Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming the country's latest football import to England. Brighton announced on their website Friday that Yoon, 18, has agreed to a deal that takes him through June 2030, though financial terms were not disclosed. Yoon is currently with Daejeon Hana Citizen FC in South Korea's K League 1 and will join Brighton on July 1, when the summer transfer window opens. The Premier League team noted that Yoon is expected to be loaned out next season. Yoon, a member of the South Korean men's under-20 national team, has been linked to Brighton since early this year. He recorded a goal and three assists in 19 matches for Daejeon last year and has logged three matches so far this season, without any goal involvement. David Weir, Brighton's technical director, said Yoon is "widely regarded as one of the best young talents in Asia." "We will be watching closely as he continues his development in the South Korean League through until the summer, and then look to find a suitable loan for him next season," Weir was quoted as saying on the team's website. Brighton are in seventh place in the Premier League this season with 47 points, having won four of their past five matches. In a statement released by Daejeon Hana Citizen, Yoon expressed his love for both the club and their home city of Daejeon, located some 140 kilometers south of Seoul. "I've been able to develop and grow so much as a player thanks to Daejeon Hana Citizen," Yoon said. "I've lived in Daejeon since middle school and I love the city so much. I will never forget all the love and support from my fans, and I will try to make the Daejeon football club proud." (Yonhap)

Who is Yun Do-young? Meet the South Korean 18-year-old set to join Brighton

Brighton & Hove Albion's expansion into football's wider markets continues with the anticipated signing of South Korean winger Yun Do-young. The 18-year-old is expected to seal a transfer from Daejeon Hana Citizen once he has finished representing his country in the ongoing Under-20s Asian Cup in China (he's pictured above in a 2-1 group-stage win against Syria). The tournament ends on March 1, and South Korea are already through to the eight-team knockout phase starting on Saturday. Advertisement Yun's intention to switch to the Amex Stadium from K League 1, South Korea's top flight, was revealed exclusively by The Athletic in January. Brighton met an undisclosed release clause in his contract and he is expected to sign a four-year deal. He is unlikely to link up with Brighton immediately and could instead play for Daejeon during their 2025 domestic season, which runs from March to November. The plan is for him to then go out on loan in Europe next season to build up enough merit points to secure a UK work permit. His pathway could follow a similar route to that used by Brighton when recruiting Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma from Kawasaki Frontale in his homeland in August 2021. Mitoma was 24 when he was signed and spent the 2021-22 season in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise, a club Brighton owner-chairman Tony Bloom had a majority stake in at the time. Bloom's scouting database plays a big role in Brighton's recruitment. It is used to identify potential targets at a young age from across the world who can be signed relatively cheaply and developed. Brighton's squad comprises the most nationalities in the Premier League, with 22 countries represented after the signing of Turkey international left-back Ferdi Kadioglu last summer, a number that would rise to 24 with the arrivals of Yun and Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas, who could link up with the first team for pre-season after signing from Germany's Nurnberg in the winter transfer window. One of the reasons their recruitment focus has expanded geographically is that it has become harder to find value in the South American market, where Brighton previously specialised, signing former midfielders Moises Caicedo (Ecuador) and Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina), plus current forwards Julio Enciso (Paraguay) and Facundo Buonanotte (Argentina) directly from teams on that continent. Advertisement However, for the signing of Yun, it was the specialised knowledge of agent Ian Ryder that was relied upon. Ryder was heavily involved in deals that took South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan from Red Bull Leipzig of Germany to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021 and winger Bae Jun-ho from Daejeon to Championship side Stoke City two years later. Daejeon Hana Citizen have announced that they have signed Yun Do-young to a professional contract. Yun is regarded as one of the top prospects in K League 1, much like Yang Min-hyuk, who recently secured a move to Tottenham. #kleague — Korea Football News (@KORFootballNews) August 16, 2024 Ryder alerted Brighton to Yun after Stoke missed out on Yang Min-hyeok. The 18-year-old attacking prospect, from Daejeon's domestic rivals Gangwon, signed for Tottenham Hotspur last summer on a six-year contract, joining compatriot Son Heung-min at the London club. Tottenham loaned Yang to Championship side Queens Park Rangers for the rest of the season during the winter transfer window and he provided an assist on his first start for them in a 4-0 home win against Derby County on Friday. Yun and Yang are regarded as two of the brightest young talents in their homeland. The former is a product of Daejeon's academy, starting out with the under-15s then rising rapidly via the B side into first-team contention last year at the age of 17. He made his debut in May 2024, benefiting from a K League rule that only allows a team to make five substitutions if they field a player under the age of 22. This gave Daejeon scope to fast-track Yun. He made 19 senior appearances in their 2024 campaign. which concluded in November, contributing a goal and three assists to a struggling side — they finished second-bottom in the 12-team table, avoiding relegation by three points. Advertisement Yun operated as an inverted right-winger in Daejeon's high-pressing game. He impressed with his quick feet and dribbling skills with a low centre of gravity (he is just over 5ft 6in/168cm tall). In the grab below, from a league fixture against Suwon last summer, Yun is highlighted with his back to goal, being closely marked inside the opposition penalty area. He appears to be running out of room as a defender closes in to make a challenge. But Yun shifts the ball quickly in one movement from his right foot to his left and through the legs of his marker to find room for a cross. The next set of grabs, in which he was playing for his country's under-19s against their Chinese counterparts last summer, show a combination of skill and acceleration. Yun feigns a movement towards the ball on his right foot and then steps onto his left, allowing the ball to run across his path and wrong-footing his marker. He hugs the touchline in a run at speed, with his opponent in vain pursuit. As another China player comes across to cover, Yun body-swerves past him into space centrally before the attack fizzles out. Yun scored twice in four games for South Korea in Under-20 Asian Cup qualifiers in September and has followed that up in the finals. He got the first-half equaliser in their 4-1 victory over Thailand in their second group fixture after playing the full 90 minutes in the defeat of Syria mentioned above. South Korean football journalist Lee Sung-mo says of Brighton's latest prospect: 'He is definitely one of the best young players in South Korea, especially since playing in the under-17s for the national team with Min-hyeok. There will be huge interest in him at home if he reaches the first team. Brighton is quite close to London, so it is not hard for Korean fans to visit to support a Korean player and the club as well. 'There are many Korean fans thinking positively of Brighton, due to their growth in recent years and also seeing what Mitoma, as an Asian player, has done at the club.'
