Elle Fanning: Sentimental Value star on Cannes Film Festival, Hunger Games prequel casting
Don't miss out on the headlines from Celeb Style. Followed categories will be added to My News. EXCLUSIVE: Whether she was wearing a powder-blue Chanel gown or a white T-shirt with the words 'Joachim Trier Summer' on it, Elle Fanning was the toast of the recent Cannes Film Festival. Nevertheless, Fanning confesses that fronting the press at the Palais des Festivals for the premiere of her upcoming film Sentimental Value – and as an ambassador for L'Oréal Paris – was 'nerve-racking' in the best possible way. 'My heart is pounding,' Fanning tells Stellar, recalling the moment she stepped onto the red carpet. 'It's like I have so many butterflies because it's just so magical. [Cannes] is a special place for me, I've been here with many films, I've got to be on the Jury. There's no feeling quite like it on the giant carpet at the Palais.' Picture: Getty Images Picture: Getty Images Picture: Getty Images At 27 years old, Fanning is already a Hollywood veteran. She made her film debut at two in 2001's I Am Sam, playing the younger version of her actor sister Dakota Fanning's character. After that came a string of roles. There was Sofia Coppola's dreamy 2010 drama Somewhere, and Maleficent with Angelina Jolie in 2014. In 2017 she co-starred with Nicole Kidman in The Beguiled; and last year, she featured in the Oscar-nominated Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, opposite her close friend Timothée Chalamet as Dylan ('we had such a fun time', Fanning recalls). She will work with Kidman again in the upcoming TV series, Margo's Got Money Troubles, and was recently cast to play the role of Effie Trinkey in Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise On The Reaping. She was back in Cannes to promote the Joachim Trier-directed Sentimental Value, in which she fittingly portrays a young Hollywood star. Picture: Getty Images Picture: Getty Images The movie – already earning raves as an early Oscars contender – won Cannes' coveted Grand Prix after receiving a reported 19-minute ovation. Fanning says that working with the Danish-born Norwegian director was on her 'bucket list'. But like Kidman, who has famously vowed to work with a female director every 18 months, she is also keen to increase women's representation in Hollywood. 'There's so much more progress to be made,' she tells Stellar. 'But we're having these conversations and there are, hopefully, more opportunities being opened up for these talented female filmmakers.' When asked how she feels about being a role model to young women herself, Fanning pauses to consider those who have inspired her. 'I'm trying to learn from [them], and how they treated me, and try to kind of emulate that to younger girls that I work with. 'It's funny not being the youngest person on a film set now. 'I had a lot of people who were kind to me growing up and gave me advice. I just want to be that for people that I work with. 'It's so important for young women to have stories that are told from a woman's point of view. 'To show that you can express yourself and have the confidence to share your stories.' Part of that confidence, Fanning says, comes from her ambassador role with L'Oréal Paris, whose slogan is famously 'because you're worth it'. Picture: Getty Images for L'Oreal Picture: Getty Images for L'Oreal Musing on the sentiment, she says: 'It has nothing to do with stereotypical beauty as we see it. It really has to do with beauty from the inside, which comes from [having] the confidence to love yourself entirely and to treat yourself [with respect]. 'We are worth it to feel our feelings. We're worth it to be messy. Especially as women, we have the power. It's such a strong message.' While public appearances are now old hat for Fanning, she says it still takes her hours to get ready for events and premieres. Elle Fanning, right, with her sister Dakota in 2019. Picture: Getty Images As Fanning points out, it's about more than just how she looks. 'It's a three-hour situation to get ready for a red carpet for me,' she says with a laugh. 'I get up, I have coffee, I have breakfast – I put a face mask on. I put ice over the face mask that I use to de-puff from jet lag and travelling. I have a [L'Oréal] Revitalift serum that I use for my skin. 'I also try to calm myself because I know it's going to be nerve-racking. It might be a stressful day, so [it's important to] just kind of have the morning to yourself – and get going.' Elle Fanning oozes glamour in a plunging blush gown as she joins Gillian Anderson, Simone Ashley and Michelle Keegan at Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Mastermind
Elle Fanning oozed glamour in a plunging blush gown as she lead the stars at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Mastermind. The A Complete Unknown star, 27, was among the Hollywood stars who took to the red carpet for the premiere of the film, starring Josh O'Connor and Alana Haim, on Friday. Elle, the sister of fellow actress Dakota Fanning, looked sensational as she stepped out in a long-sleeved blush pink gown, which was adorned with jewels and featured a plunging neckline. Her geometric patterned gown also had a train at the bottom of its tulle skirt and a brooch attached to the waistband, with her blonde locks in natural waves. She was joined on the red carpet by Bridgerton star Simone Ashley, who turned heads in a white puffed out strapless midi dress complete with statement features at the bust. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Simone, 30, looked effortlessly chic in the ruched gown, which cinched her in at the waist, and she paired it with white stilettos and diamond drop earrings. Another star who was spotted out at the festival on Friday was Gillian Anderson, who wowed in a green gown. The Sex Education star, 56, looked sensational as she stepped out in a spring green jacquard print gown, featuring a full skirt and a small waistband, as well as thin straps. Gillian's blonde locks were swept into a beehive messy bun and she paired the dress with a diamond necklace. Meanwhile Michelle Keegan also made an appearance as she stepped out in a structured white gown and a dramatic hat ahead of the L'Oreal Light on Women Award. The former Coronation Street star, 37, was seen at Hotel Martinez on Friday during day eleven of the Cannes Film Festival before attending the premiere of The Mastermind. Michelle turned heads as she stepped out in a stunning white corseted strapless gown, which featured a peplum design and figure-hugging skirt. She paired the gown with a striking matching hat and open-toed satin heels, accessorising with a statement diamond necklace. Simone, 30, looked effortlessly chic in the ruched gown and she paired it with white stilettos and diamond drop earrings The stars of The Mastermind were also out in force as The Crown's Josh joined his co-star, HAIM band member Alana, on the red carpet. The L'Oreal Light on Women Award 'champions emerging female voices in film' and will this year be hosted by American actress Viola Davis, 59, who follows in the footsteps of Elle Fanning and Kate Winslet. The L'Oreal award will be handed out to one standout female director from the Cannes Short Film Competition after Viv Li scooped the prize for her work on Across the Waters in 2024. The event comes on the penultimate night of the festival after a host of A-listers flocked to Cannes over the previous couple of weeks. Filmmakers come from nearly every corner of the globe to showcase their films while dealmakers work through the night to sell finished films or packaged productions to various territories. The awards were being held as part of Cannes Film Festival, which will come to an end on Saturday with a closing ceremony. Cannes, where filmmakers, sales agents and journalists gather from around the world, is the Olympics of the big screen, with its own golden prize, the Palme d´Or, to give out at the end. 'You release a film into that Colosseum-like situation,' says Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, who´s returning to Cannes with 'The Secret Agent, a thriller set during Brazil ´s dictatorship. 'You've got to really prepare for the whole experience because it´s quite intense - not very far from the feeling of approaching a roller coaster as you go up the steps at the Palais.' The Sex Education star, 56, looked sensational as she stepped out in a spring green jacquard print gown Gillian's floor-length gown featured a full skirt and a small waistband, as well as thin straps Michelle Keegan put on a glamorous display in a structured white gown and a dramatic hat ahead of Friday's L'Oreal Light on Women Award This year's Cannes Film Festival is taking place in the wake of Trump´s vow to enact tariffs on international films. Trump sent shock waves through Hollywood and the international film community when he announced on May 4 that all movies 'produced in Foreign Lands' will face 100 percent tariffs. The White House has said no final decisions have been made. Options being explored include federal incentives for U.S.-based productions, rather than tariffs. But the announcement was a reminder of how international tensions can destabilise even the oldest cultural institutions. The Cannes Film Festival originally emerged in the World War II years, when the rise of fascism in Italy led to the founding of an alternative to the then-government controlled Venice Film Festival. In the time since, Cannes´ resolute commitment to cinema has made it a beacon to filmmakers. Countless directors have come to make their name. This year is no different, though some of the first-time filmmakers at Cannes are already particularly well-known. Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) have all unveiled their feature directorial debuts in Cannes´ Un Certain Regard sidebar section. Many Cannes veterans have returned, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro - who received an honorary Palme d´Or 49 years after Taxi Driver premiered in Cannes - and Quentin Tarantino, who paid tribute to low-budget Western director George Sherman. Over recent years the star-studded extravaganza has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films being screened on the Croisette. But new nudity rules, devised for 'the sake of decency,' have been implemented at this year's festival. According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document.

Saoirse Ronan was ‘pitted against' another actress in early career: 'There's space for all of us now'
Saoirse Ronan admitted that she was pitted against fellow actresses during the early years of her career. The Irish actress, who has been nominated for four Oscars, started acting as a child growing up in Dublin . Her father, who was also an actor, got Saoirse started in small TV roles but before long she had graduated to films. She got her big break in the 2007 film Atonement, and even received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. But the early years weren't as easy as she made them seem, and Ronan found herself pitted against other actresses who were a similar age. Ronan told ELLE for the magazine's Women in Hollywood issue, 'For a while, it was me and Dakota Fanning.' Read More Related Articles Donald Trump branded 'disgusting' as he honors Pope Francis in 'baffling' way Read More Related Articles Trump loses the plot as he compares tariff flip-flop to running through a wall 'And I would love for Dakota and I to work together. She's one of the reasons why I got into acting in the first place, because when I was really young, she was working from such an early age, and I used to watch her stuff, ' she continued. Dakota Fanning, who is the same age as Ronan, started her acting career at just five years old, starring in the hospital series ER. After appearing in films like I Am Sam, alongside Sean Penn, and Uptown Girls, with Brittany Murphy, Fanning was an instant star all before the age of 8. Dakota Fanning starred alongside Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds in 2005 (Image: (Photo by Jun Sato/WireImage)) She became one of the most recognizable child stars of the early 2000s, and continued to have huge success throughout her teen years too. At the same time, Ronan, who had a similar height, build and hair color, was also nabbing roles in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. However, according to the Brooklyn actress, the competitive nature of the acting world seems to have faded for her, over the years. 'To feel like, oh, there's space for all of us now, where there's still healthy competition,' she said, 'I think it's great.' Fanning, who starred in a horror film set in the west of Ireland last year, has a younger sister Elle who is also an actress, and previously told Elle there was never any competition between the siblings growing up. "We have really different personalities too, so I think that's also helpful. We like different things," added Fanning.
