AFL 2025: Collingwood will keep Steele Sidebottom and Darcy Moore on ice for its clash with North Melbourne
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. In-form Collingwood veteran Steele Sidebottom will sit out of this weekend's clash with North Melbourne to manage a 'grumbling back'. Sidebottom has delivered a brilliant opening half of the season, highlighted by Anzac Day Medal honours in the wet against Essendon. Collingwood coach Craig McRae said Sidebottom was due for a rest and the flare up in his back paved the way for it to be this week. 'Steele is going to rest this week, we'll manage him, that's been the plan for a number of weeks. He's had a bit of a grumbling back,' McRae said. 'But he's had that for, I want to say, the last six or seven years, to be honest. 'Every week he said 'nah, I'll be right, we'll get there' and then slowly but surely he's expressed himself a bit more. 'We've had to deliver a plan to manage him this week.' Steele Sidebottom (left) will be rested this week. Picture: Michael Klein Captain Darcy Moore (shoulder) won't play this week, while Dan Houston (calf) will be named despite showing discomfort at training. Moore missed last week after hurting his shoulder in the dying minutes of Collingwood's previous win over Fremantle. Houston sat out of main training earlier in the week and did some fitness testing on Thursday with heavy bandaging on his right leg. McRae said Houston 'did a great job to get up' and will face the Kangaroos unless he pulls up sore on Friday. 'Dan had a bigger limp at the start of the week, so we're rapt with how he's gone about it,' he said. 'He'll play at the moment as long as he doesn't pull up sore tomorrow. We'll name him, credit to him he did a great job to get up this week. 'It's looking unlikely for Darcy at this stage, I think we'll rule him out … he's another one who put himself right in the frame to play, unfortunately there's just a little bit of lingering stuff in the AC joint at the moment.' AFL great calls out Ken Hinkley detail as Houston and Pies respond to backlash
Richmond legend Jack Riewoldt has called out Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley over his explanation for Saturday night's record 91-point thumping by Collingwood. Dan Houston returned to haunt his former club in an impressive first match for the Magpies, who bounced back from their Opening Round mauling by GWS - and the backlash that followed - by handing Hinkley his heaviest defeat in 275 games in charge of Port. Collingwood's premiership credentials were widely questioned after being thrashed by the Giants in their season opener but that was without Houston, who was excellent in his first game in Magpies colours. The All-Australian defender forced a trade out of Port Adelaide last October but only just completed a lengthy suspension to take his place against his former team on Saturday night at the MCG. And Houston was one of the best afield with 27 disposals, 10 intercept possessions and six score involvements. "He's a great pick-up, a talented player," Collingwood coach Craig McRae said after the 21.10 (136) to 6.9 (45) flogging. "When you have someone come to your club, you have this great optimism about what they're going to bring. "But when they're actually in your system you go, 'Woah, he's going to make a difference'. Not only does he win the ball in the air, he wins it on the ground and then he uses the ball ridiculously well. He's a rare talent and we're very happy to have him." A superb Collingwood debut for Dan Houston 👏#AFLPiesPower — AFL (@AFL) March 15, 2025 Hinkley was far from happy with his side's effort against the Pies though, after admitting they were "miles off the pace" compared to their opponents. It was a first game of the season to forget for the Power and Hinkley suggested that Collingwood had an advantage by already playing in Opening Round, and having a point to prove after their big loss to GWS. 'Collingwood beat us the way they've beat us in the past, they were too physical around the contest and they were able to hurt us badly on turnover," Hinkley told reporters. 'We looked like the team who didn't play last week and they looked like a team who had played and got a reminder – we were miles off the pace." Riewoldt refused to buy that "narrative" from the Power coach though and argued that it should not result in such a massive thrashing. "I don't buy that. 91 points is 91 points and sort of suggesting the fact Collingwood were a bit more hardened because they'd been smacked up by the Giants is not something that I think peddling is a good idea for Port Adelaide," the Tigers legend said on Fox Footy. RELATED: Buddy's message to Ugle-Hagan amid fresh Brayden Maynard drama Craig McRae's confession about wife amid truth of Nick Daicos issue North Melbourne dual premiership legend David King suggested Port's coaching succession plan that will see Hinkley step down after this season, had led to "confusion" within the playing group. 'Look at what the Swans have done with John Longmire," King said. "There are other ways to treat the former coach with respect but I just think this is going to create confusion and in the end, it's about what they do for two hours on the weekend. 'I don't care what it looks like behind the scenes and how warm and fuzzy it is inside the four walls of Port Adelaide. Being hammered by 15 goals, it's the biggest story in town. The long goodbye, the slow goodbye – it doesn't work. It's so damaging to your football program. Who is in charge? Whose system has failed tonight?" Riewoldt agreed and suggested it might be better for Port to hand over the coaching reins to senior assistant Josh Carr sooner rather than later. 'Why prolong it for another 12 months full well knowing that any loss over the early part of the season, not to mention a 91-point loss in round one, will add petrol to a fire which has been bubbling along for a fair period of time now," he said. 'I commend the Swans for the way they've done it. They've ripped the band-aid off and maybe it's something Port Adelaide should think about.' Collingwood's crushing win came with Steele Sidebottom (31 disposals), Patrick Lipinski (24) and Jack Crisp (26) all influential in a dominant team display. Tim Membrey (four goals), Brody Mihocek and Dan McStay (three each) were the best of the goal-kickers, while Nick Daicos wore down Willem Drew's tag to finish with 26 disposals and a goal. "We had our own internal dialogue of what we wanted to improve on ourselves and let others sit here or there judging us from afar," McRae said. "I didn't need to use it (the criticism). We have great pride in our performance and we took a step forward tonight." with AAP

High expectations for Magpies recruit Dan Houston
Collingwood recruit Dan Houston has set a high bar for his new AFL club, declaring "anything's possible" as Craig McRae's men seek to surge back into premiership contention. After winning the flag in 2023, the Magpies missed the finals altogether last year as a raft of injuries derailed their campaign. But with All-Australian defender Houston bolstering the list - along with fellow experienced recruits Tim Membrey and Harry Perryman - there are huge expectations on Collingwood this year. "The boys are really hungry and they know what the list is capable of," Houston said. "If we can get as many boys out on the track as possible and start really well this year, I think anything's possible. "We're looking forward to those first few games, so we'll get the practice matches under the belt and go from there." Houston, who played 168 games over eight seasons with Port Adelaide, was one of the most sought-after players during last year's trade period and landed at Collingwood after requesting a move back to his home state. "I'm absolutely loving it and it's been a good pre-season so far," the 27-year-old said. "I've been getting to know the boys and training hard and getting to know the game plan. "I feel like I've settled in now and I'm looking forward to getting into some practice games." Houston expects to fill his customary position at half-back under fourth-year Magpies coach McRae, having starred in that role for Port Adelaide. "I'm going to slot in and do what I've been doing previously in that half-back role," Houston said. "I've got to try to get to know the game plan and bring what I can bring with my defensive stuff and then when I get the ball in hand." Tigers key forward Tom Lynch also expects to play in that fixture despite hitting a pre-season speed-bump when he was concussed during match simulation at training last week. Lynch, who joined Houston for a Carlsberg Beach Club promotion on Saturday, was hurt in an accidental collision with Richmond player development manager Joel Garner but is confident he won't miss any games. "I've recovered really well from it," Lynch said. "It was the first sort of real heavy knock I've had but after a couple of days I'm feeling good. "I'm back into running and things like that, so I'm progressing through the protocols pretty quickly."
