‘It's been a fabulous ride': Local server hanging up apron after 45 years at The Keg

Jamey Duncan is retiring from The Keg in Windsor, Ont. — a place she's called her second home for over 40 years. (Bob Bellacicco/CTV News Winsdor) After more than four decades of serving steaks and smiles, Jamey Duncan is retiring from The Keg — a place she's called her second home for over 40 years. Duncan, started serving at The Keg before the brand moved in. The building at the corner of Sydney and Division Road, used to be a Crock and Block Restaurant. 'I got hired for that and then it changed about '83 to The Keg and stayed on and it's been an absolutely fabulous ride.' said Duncan who plans to hang up her apron on June 1 after a 45-year run at that location. Before her final shift, coworkers organized a surprise retirement party Sunday afternoon. 'It's been an incredible honor having her on the team and it's been our pleasure getting to know her as an employee and as a colleague and a friend.' said Cameron Powley, operating partner. If you've been to The Keg throughout the last four decades, chances are you have had Duncan as a server. If you've worked with her over the 40-plus years, chances are you've been called darling. 'Everybody is darling,' said co-worker Heidi Gifford. 'I've heard it so much that now I've started doing that so I feel like I'm turning into Jamey.' Dan Moriarty has worked with Duncan for 30 years and smiles when looking back at their time together. 'We used to sing Happy birthday to everybody. That was always lots of fun.' Moriarty said. 'So many years, so many friends, so many faces. I can't believe many people have come back to see her and that's just a testament to how great Jamey is.' Duncan found more than just a paycheck at The Keg. 'Love, family, friendships, security — you know, those are pretty good things,' Duncan said with a laugh when asked why she stayed at one place for so long. Duncan is considered a gem by colleagues and super mom by her two children whom she raised alone. 'She gave us everything we ever needed,' said her son Ryan who also worked at The Keg during his teenaged years until he was 20. 'She did very well, and I can't thank her enough.' Duncan, who has also spent time at The Keg's downtown location, has always been a constant in a changing world. 'It's wonderful. It's too bad the world's changed that people don't do that anymore [stay at one job,]' she reflected. 'I had a fantastic career and cannot ask for anything more.' Though she admits she'd love to work another 20 years, Duncan says the time is right to move on. Her next chapter includes travel, and perhaps a part-time job. 'We never know how long we're going to live,' she said with a big smile. 'I want to make sure I have enough money.' Duncan looks forward to enjoying the sizzle of retirement while cherishing a job that was well done. 'I couldn't have asked for a better gig.'

Enterprise Ireland targets $500bn post-war reconstruction of Ukraine

Rebuilding the country will be one of the biggest construction projects Europe has ever seen Enterprise Ireland has appointed a Ukrainian market expert to help Irish companies win business for the post-war reconstruction of the beleaguered country – work estimated to be worth over $500bn. The ongoing war in Ukraine, initiated by Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, has caused unprecedented devastation to the country's infrastructure, economy, and society. As of early 2025, estimates from the UN and other institutions suggest the cost of reconstruction could exceed $524bn over the next decade, making it one of the largest rebuilding efforts since World War II. Sources in Warsaw told the Sunday Independent that Irish companies have been seeking opportunities in Ukraine, with state agency Enterprise Ireland supporting such efforts. In response to questions, Enterprise Ireland confirmed it had been 'assessing potential future opportunities' for Irish companies in the rebuilding of Ukraine. 'We are currently working with a pathfinder [market expert] to map out opportunities, particularly aligned to the post-war reconstruction needs of Ukraine and Ireland's capability, –including in health, construction, engineering, telecommunications, digital technology, and professional services sectors.' Enterprise Ireland's team in Poland has been helping assess opportunities. Last year it attended the Rebuild Ukraine Conference in Warsaw, pitching Ireland's capabilities and companies. CDGA Consultants, a Cork-based engineering consultancy, is among the Irish companies to have already won business in Ukraine. Last summer the company won a tender worth $250,000 to build a power system for a UN scientific facility in Zhytomyr oblast. Dan Moriarty, managing director of CDGA, told the Sunday Independent the business was actively bidding with UN agencies on 'anything for Ukraine'. Moriarty said CDGA had received some 'crucial' support from EI for its work in Ukraine and was working toward winning more contracts in the country. However, he noticed the effect of international financial support drying up in recent months, with two contracts he was close to securing 'disappearing'. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more 'There was a bit of a dead period in January and February with the UN agencies; I think they were all reeling from these funding changes,' he said. 'It is only in the last six weeks that we have really seen the tenders start to appear again specifically for Ukraine.' Matrix Internet, a digital marketing agency from Dublin, has also been bidding for business in Ukraine. Jeff Sheridan, managing director of Matrix Internet, said it had been in discussions with some parts of the Ukrainian government. Some of the potential work involves creating programmes that will help Ukrainian businesses 'survive, thrive and become more international'. The business has also been working with Ukrainian organisation Unbroken, which helps people to rehabilitate after returning from the frontlines. Sheridan said the Ukrainian market has the potential to be huge for Irish businesses, but that Ireland needed to 'step up'. 'I know other countries have heavier industries maybe than we do, more to do with construction. But it did feel like there is a big opportunity there and EI is trying to get Ireland into the picture. 'I think EI is trying hard, but maybe there is more the Irish Government could do. I think there is a huge opportunity there.'
