Wisconsin deputies warn Lake Monona visitors over Memorial Day weekend to stay alert for evidence of missing boater
DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – The search for a missing boater on Wisconsin's Lake Monona continues, and as Memorial Day weekend approaches, deputies are urging visitors to be on the lookout for any potential evidence. On Friday morning, deputies with the Dane County Sheriff's Office posted an update on the missing Lake Monona boater ahead of the likely increase in water traffic over Memorial Day weekend. Semi-truck rolls over on Wisconsin highway, multiple agencies called to assist at the scene Deputies are asking for boaters, swimmers, and others who recreate on Lake Monona to notify them if anything is seen or found that can be substantial in their search efforts for a boater who went missing on May 16. 'If you see anything you believe could help, please call 911 and provide a description and location,' the Dane County Sheriff's Office stated in its post. On Friday, May 16, a sailboat, which had four people on board, capsized on Lake Monona around 8 p.m. Fox Valley proclamation in place to keep boaters safe during Memorial Day weekend One person reportedly drifted to the shore on the overturned boat, while the other three hung on to a kayak. Two of three people who held on to the kayak were rescued, but the fourth person, who reportedly was not wearing a life jacket, is yet to be found. Sheriff's Office investigating overnight homicide at Wisconsin gas station
PLEASANT SPRINGS, Wis. (WFRV) – Deputies in southern Wisconsin are investigating a homicide that happened overnight at a local gas station after a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead. A Facebook post from the Dane County Sheriff's Office states that they are currently investigating a homicide that happened at a gas station in the 2000 block of CTH N in Pleasant Springs. 54-year-old Wisconsin man identified as suspect in homicide case after hours-long standoff with police Deputies say they got a call around 12:10 a.m. on Friday, March 7, and are reporting that there is currently no danger posed to the public. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to call the Madison Area Crimestoppers at (608) 266-6014. A 23-year-old man was killed during the incident. 27 years after Father Alfred Kunz's murder, Sheriff in Wisconsin urges killer to confess as investigation continues
DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – March 4, 2025, marks the 27th anniversary of the murder of Father Alfred Kunz, a Catholic priest who was a pastor in Madison for over 30 years, and officials are urging the killer to come forward. The Dane County Sheriff's Office is continuing to search for Father Kunz's killer to this day, and in a Tuesday morning Facebook post, the department left a message for whoever did it. Husband of deceased woman in Wisconsin being held in jail, investigation continues 'You have a story to tell, and we want to hear it,' the post said. 'Time has passed, but the truth remains. The community is still waiting for answers, and we are still searching for justice. You may think this case is forgotten, but we haven't stopped working.' The post added that it's never too late to come forward, and urged the public to help in the continued investigation. Deputies in Wisconsin county warn of increase in SIM Swap cases, scammer accesses phone number, personal info
DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – A Sheriff's Office in southern Wisconsin is warning county residents about an increase in SIM Swap cases, where a scammer gains access to a victim's cell phone number which allows access to bank accounts and other personal information. A Facebook post from the Dane County Sheriff's Office was sent out on February 13 alerting citizens about the increase in SIM Swap cases, otherwise known as a SIM Swap or SIMjacking. Wisconsin man arrested, officially charged with Possession of Child Pornography following cyper tip Deputies say during the attack, the victim's cell phone number is transferred to the scammer's phone, allowing them to access bank accounts, payment apps, and other personal information. The scammer can then use the victim's information to contact a cell phone provider to get control of the phone number. Dane County Sheriff's detectives recently investigated a SIM Swap case after a victim realized they couldn't make or receive calls. A family member first tried to help and discovered that the phone number had reportedly been stolen. Authorities noted that even in this instance where the scammers only had brief access, they already had begun to access payment apps. Search warrant leads to the arrest of two in Wisconsin on multiple drug-related charges Deputies provided the following tips to help avoid this type of fraud: AT&T allows you to create a password in your online account's 'manage extra security' portion T-Mobile lets you turn on the 'Account Takeover Protection' feature Verizon has a 'Number Lock' feature you can enable For other carriers, contact them to find out what security measures they offer It is recommended to call your local authorities if you believe to have been a victim of a SIM Swap.
