The Winnipeg Police Service is investigating an early morning stabbing in the city's North End that sent five people to hospital on Monday.
The investigation began around 4 a.m. when officers were called to the 500 block of Mountain Avenue for reports that two people had been stabbed. However, police arrived on scene to find multiple injured people.
Five people were taken to the hospital—three in critical condition and two in stable condition. Everyone has since been upgraded to stable, police said.
WPS Const. Dani McKinnon said the major crimes unit has taken over the investigation and is trying to piece together what happened.
'Two groups of individuals came together. There was some type of physical fight. It turned violent, and edged weapons were involved,' she said. 'Due to injuries, perhaps people aren't able to fully speak with investigators yet, so we're still taking some time to unpack all of that.'
The area was closed off for the investigation Monday morning. Police said there is no risk to public safety, and McKinnon noted it was an 'isolated incident' involving a group of people fighting.
