The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say two Montreal-area men have been charged after they were caught with illegal handguns near the Canadian border in the Eastern Townships.
The federal police force says officers saw one of the men illegally crossing the border into Canada.
When the men were stopped, police say they found two loaded handguns, ammunition and US$2,080.
Daniel Humberto Perez Ochoa, 36, of Montreal, and Nabil Ammar, 35, have been charged with two counts of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.
The RCMP says the men appeared in court June 11 and were scheduled to appear in court again Friday.
In 2024, police in Quebec seized 308 guns that had been smuggled into the province from the United States, according to provincial police, including 292 handguns.
