The BBC has announced the end of an acclaimed sitcom in a devastating blow to fans - confirming the upcoming series will be its last. Boarders, which has a perfect 100 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score, follows five black teens from inner-city London on scholarships to a prestigious boarding school. The comedy-drama has become highly popular since it was first released in February last year, quickly renewed for a second series, which came out earlier this year. Fans will be overjoyed to know a third series is now in the works, with filming set to begin later this year and the six episodes due to drop in 2026. But sadly, this will be the last season of the beloved show. All five of the leads - Jodie Campbell, Sekou Diaby, Aruna Jalloh, Myles Kamwendo and Josh Tedeku - will be back on our screens for the third and final instalment. They will be joined by writer and creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor, set to return as the teens' mentor Gus. The new instalment will also see Daniel make his directorial debut, as he takes the helm on the show's final ever episode. This series will be set in the students' final term at St Gilbert's, with exams looming and the pressure mounting to work out what lies beyond. But a growing rivalry with a neighbouring school - which their friend and classmate Abby (Assa Kanoute) is now attending - threatens chaos and distraction. Others reprising their roles for Boarders' last hurrah include Niky Wardley as teacher Carol and Tallulah Greive, Rosie Graham and Zheng Xi Yong as students Beatrix, Florence and Xiang. Daniel, the mind behind the genius series, said: 'Boarders has been a deeply personal project for me and it's been incredible to see how audiences have connected with the characters. 'From day one, I wanted to create something funny, honest, and proudly Black – and in this final term, I hope to finish their story as they face their final year with greater challenges, deeper friendships and the looming question of life beyond school.' The announcement comes just months after the second series of the show aired in February - which saw fans dub Boarders the 'best show on the BBC'. The first series saw the teens get up to various antics during their studies as they tried to make the most of the opportunity. Series two introduced a new acting headmistress, Carol Watlington-Geese (Niky Wardley), who wanted to reduce the group of five to three. The season also featured some iconic guest appearances, including Natalie Cassidy from EastEnders and Alan Cumming from The Traitors US. One fan went as far as to say, on review site Rotten Tomatoes: 'Best show on the BBC.

Ali MacPhail will return as the producer and Carleen Beadle-Larcombe as line producer. Mykaell Riley will also return as Musical Director. Executive producers are Daniel Lawrence Taylor and Madeleine Sinclair for Studio Lambert, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC. Tubi, USA and ZDF Germany are the shows lead international partners and the series has also been playing with the previously announced Stan in Australia, Discovery in New Zealand, Amazon Prime Video Africa (pan) as well EITB in Spain, RTP (Portugal), RTL Hrvatska (Croatia), YLE (Finland) and VRT (Flemish Belgium).
