(WIVT/WBGH) – A whole raft of students from BOCES are winners following a regional skills competition.
They include Micah Gray of Maine-Endwell who won first place in cabinet making. He one of roughly 26 Broome-Tioga BOCES students to receive medals at the SkillsUSA Regional Competition recently at SUNY Morrisville.
15 of them took first place.
That includes Culinary Arts student Daniel Skojec of Vestal who had to cut apart a whole chicken in his contest.
'I never thought that I would be in a situation where I would be in a kitchen, using knives and being able to make fantastic tasting dishes. I just love putting smiles on peoples' faces,' said Skojec.
Jayce Barton of Windsor was a first-place winner in electrical construction wiring.
Two of the regional champs were state champions last year and are looking to return to nationals next year.
Shayla Limbert of Maine-Endwell took first place in TV Video Production with Brenden Horn of Vestal. They had to make a promotional video for SkillsUSA.
'I always have doubt in my work. I'm like, it's not as good as it could be. But every time I get there, I'm like, whoa! It's just a lot of excitement, a lot of like, oh my gosh, I actually just did that?' said Limbert.
The students move on to the state championship in Syracuse next with a chance to qualify for nationals in Atlanta.
