Israel continues deadly strikes on Gaza, despite global condemnation
Strikes on Gaza killed at least 85 Palestinians, authorities said on Wednesday, as Israel continues with its new military offensive despite growing condemnation from world leaders. In the latest assaults, two strikes in northern Gaza overnight hit a family home and a school where people were sheltering, killing at least 22, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The Israeli military said it targeted a Hamas command center and warned civilians ahead of time. A strike in the central city of Deir al-Balah killed 13 people, and another in the nearby built-up Nuseirat refugee camp killed 15, according to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Two strikes in Khan Younis killed 10 people, according to Nasser Hospital. Israel said it was targeting militants and blames Hamas for civilian deaths because the group operates in densely populated areas. Under international pressure, Israel agreed earlier this week to allow a "minimal" amount of aid into Gaza, which has been under blockade for several months. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that although the aid has entered Gaza, aid workers were unable to bring it to where it is most needed, after the Israeli military forced them to reload the supplies onto separate trucks and workers ran out of time. Israel claimed five trucks entered Monday and 93 trucks entered Tuesday. But the UN confirmed only a few dozen trucks actually entered Gaza on Tuesday. The British government on Tuesday said it was suspending free trade negotiations with Israel and was leveling new sanctions targeting settlements in the occupied West Bank. The move came a day after the U.K, France and Canada condemned Israel's handling of the war in Gaza and its actions in the West Bank and threatened to take action. The UK leveled sanctions against three settlers and a number of organisations, including settler leader Daniella Weiss and the movement she heads. In response, Weiss said hundreds of families are ready to build Jewish settlements in Gaza. Daniella Weiss, regarded as the godmother of the Israeli settler movement, is one of the Israeli settlers the UK sanctioned. Credit: AP No further progress has been made towards a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza and on Tuesday, Netanyahu said he was recalling his negotiating team from the Gulf state of Qatar after a week of talks. Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said a "fundamental gap" remained between the two parties and that none of the proposals were able to bridge their differences. Hamas said no real ceasefire talks have taken place since Saturday in Doha. The group accused Netanyahu of "falsely portraying participation" and attempting to "mislead global public opinion" by keeping Israel's delegation there without engaging in serious negotiations. UK Sanctions Daniella Weiss and Israeli Settler Groups Over West Bank Violence
H-Tayea The United Kingdom has announced sanctions targeting Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank, including financial restrictions and travel bans on three individuals, two illegal outposts, and two organizations that support or incite violence against Palestinians. Among those sanctioned is Daniella Weiss, a prominent figure in Israel's settler movement. The UK government described the sanctions as part of a broader effort to hold accountable those responsible for serious human rights abuses in the West Bank. The announcement came during a statement in Parliament by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who also confirmed the immediate suspension of negotiations for a new free trade agreement with Israel, citing the policies of the Netanyahu government in the West Bank and Gaza as incompatible with the UK's values and international obligations. "I have seen firsthand the fear endured by Palestinian communities and the impunity of those who commit settler violence. These sanctions show our determination to hold extremists accountable," said Lammy. The measures include asset freezes, travel bans to the UK, and disqualification from company directorships. They apply to individuals and entities implicated in systematic harassment and attacks on Palestinians. These actions build on existing sanctions targeting 18 other individuals and organizations for abuses in the West Bank. The decision follows a sharp rise in settler violence: the United Nations has recorded over 1,800 attacks on Palestinian communities by settlers since January 2024. UK officials cited this increase in violence as a direct threat to the viability of the two-state solution and regional stability. In his statement, Lammy also addressed the escalating situation in Gaza, expressing unequivocal opposition to Israel's expanded ground operations and condemning Israeli plans to forcibly displace Palestinians within the enclave. He warned of the growing risk of famine and repeated the UK's demand that Hamas release all hostages immediately and unconditionally, while affirming that Hamas must not be allowed to govern Gaza. The Foreign Secretary's remarks came alongside coordinated pressure from international partners. A recent joint statement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned both Israeli military expansion in Gaza and illegal settlements in the West Bank, warning of further international measures if Israel continues its current path. As a further diplomatic step, Middle East Minister Hemesh Faulkner summoned the Israeli Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, for formal discussions at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). 'The Israeli government bears responsibility for stopping these aggressive actions. Its ongoing failure to act puts Palestinian lives and the two-state solution at risk,' Lammy concluded. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies

'Godmother' of Israeli settler movement from Louis Theroux documentary sanctione
'What is on my mind all the time is how to bring more people to settle the Palestinian land.' This is what Daniella Weiss, often referred to as the 'godmother' of Israel's settler movement, proudly told Louis Theroux during his BBC documentary 'The Settlers'. The 79-year-old is among several people sanctioned by the UK today over inciting or carrying out violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Foreign secretary David Lammy said about the measures: 'The sanctioning of Daniella Weiss and others demonstrates our determination to hold extremist settlers to account as Palestinian communities suffer violence and intimidation at the hands of extremist settlers. 'The Israeli government has a responsibility to intervene and halt these aggressive actions. 'Their consistent failure to act is putting Palestinian communities and the two-state solution in peril.' Weiss is the founder and leader of Nachala, a radical settler organisation, and a former mayor of Kedumim, an Israeli settlement located in the West Bank. For more than 50 years, she has been prominent in the creation of illegal settlements on territory captured by Israel in the Middle East war in 1967. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Nachala's ambition is for Israel to annex both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Weiss also believes that Lebanon, Jordan and parts of Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are all part of Greater Israel. The UK government described Weiss as a 'high-profile extremist settler' and said she is now subject to an asset freeze, travel ban, and director disqualification. It added: 'Weiss has been involved in threatening, perpetrating, promoting and supporting, acts of aggression and violence against Palestinian individuals.' Nachala, which has been involved in 'facilitating, inciting, promoting and providing logistical and financial support for the establishment of illegal outposts and forced displacement of Palestinians' is now subject to an asset freeze. In Theroux's 'Settlers', Weiss is shown promoting the expansion of Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza. She described settlements as a fulfilment of a divine mission and made no apology for the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. The activist told the British filmmaker that peace would only come through 'Jewish control' of the land. When Weiss said that she 'does not think' about Palestinian villages in the West Bank such as Beita, Theroux called her stance 'sociopathic'. Weiss' inclusion on the sanctions list marks a rare move against a leading ideological figure in Israel's settlement project. More Trending Eliav Libi and Zohar Sabah, as well as two illegal settler outposts and two organisations 'supporting violence against Palestinian communities in the West Bank' have also been targeted. 'These individuals and entities are now subject to measures including financial restrictions, travel bans, and director disqualifications, and will follow 18 other individuals, entities, and companies already sanctioned relating to serious violence against communities in the West Bank,' the press release read. UK ends Israel trade talks after 'indefensible' new Gaza offensive
The British government has sanctioned illegal Israeli settlers, halted trade negotiations and summoned the ambassador using the strongest language yet to condemn the country's 'intolerable' and 'repellent' actions in Gaza. In impassioned scenes in the UK Parliament, Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned Israel's renewed offensive in Gaza as 'morally wrong'. The deaths of 53,573 Palestinians since the October 2023 attacks by Hamas on Israel and the current military campaign that has driven Gazans from their homes into a corner of the strip have pushed Westminster into taking its strongest action to date. 'We must call this what it is. It is extremism. It is dangerous, it is repellent,' Mr Lammy told Parliament. 'I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.' He announced sanctions against West Bank settlers on Tuesday as 'settler violence has soared'. The list of seven sanctioned entities included three people and four organisations. The activist Daniella Weiss – recently profiled by broadcaster Louis Theroux and who is regarded as one of the most extreme settlers – was on the list. Mr Lammy said the measures follow a dramatic surge in settler violence in the occupied West Bank, with the UN recording more than 1,800 attacks against Palestinian communities since January 1, 2024. 'We are demonstrating again that we will continue to act against those carrying out heinous abuses of human rights,' he said. The Foreign Secretary called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to 'end this blockade now' as only 10 aid lorries have entered Gaza since the weekend. Many humanitarian groups say 500 shipments are required each day to sustain Gaza's population. The 10 lorries were the first consignments into Gaza for nearly three months. Mr Lammy also condemned senior Israeli cabinet members who call for the 'cleansing' of Gaza of Palestinians. 'We are now entering a dark new phase in this conflict. The Netanyahu government is planning to drive Gazans from their homes into a corner of the strip to the south and permit a fraction of the aid that they need,' he said. At the weekend, the UK's Co-op supermarket chain announced at its annual meeting that members had voted to stop selling Israeli goods and cease all trade with the country and its suppliers. In his statement to Parliament, Mr Lammy also announced the formal pause of the extension to the Free Trade Agreement negotiations with Israel. 'While the UK government remains committed to the existing trade agreement in force, it is not possible to advance discussions on a new, upgraded FTA with a Netanyahu government that is pursuing egregious policies in the West Bank and Gaza,' he said. As he announced that Israeli ambassador to the UK Tzipi Hotovely had been summoned to the Foreign Office, a Labour back bench MP shouted: 'Expel them!' Hamish Falconer, Parliamentary Under Secretary for the Middle East, said he would tell Ms Hotovely that 'the 11-week block on aid to Gaza has been cruel and indefensible'. Earlier, Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the leaders of France and Canada to formally give voice to their horror at the military escalation in Gaza and repeat calls for an immediate ceasefire. 'I want to put on record today that we're horrified by the escalation from Israel,' Mr Starmer told Parliament, after releasing a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 'We repeat our demand for a ceasefire as the only way to free the hostages. We repeat our opposition to settlements in the West Bank and we repeat our demand to massively scale up humanitarian assistance into Gaza,' Mr Starmer said. 'We must co-ordinate our response, because this war has gone on for far too long.' French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told national radio on Tuesday that Mr Netanyahu's angry response to the three leaders' statement could not disguise the pressure Israel was feeling. Mr Barrot said the situation in Gaza was unsustainable as the strip had become a death trap for its people. Israel's announcements of new aid shipments for the first time in 11 weeks was insufficient for an international community which could not turn its eyes from the suffering in Gaza, he said. He also noted that in Mr Netanyahu's response the Israeli leader was forced to take into account the position of the international community and its denunciation of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
