Davenport House Museum announces Family Day events
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Davenport House Museum, an iconic property owned and operated by Historic Savannah Foundation, will host four themed Family Day events in 2025 at the award-winning house museum, located at 324 E. State St. on Columbia Square in Savannah, Ga. Each Family Day at the Davenport House will offer creative activities, hands-on learning opportunities and historical exploration for all ages. All Family Day events are free and open to the public. 'The Davenport House is the birthplace of Savannah's modern-day preservation movement and a rich source of history in the heart of the National Historic Landmark District,' said Danielle Hodes, Executive Director at the Davenport House Museum. 'We warmly invite local residents and visitors of all ages to join us for our community-focused Family Days, as we celebrate Savannah and share our city's unique history with the next generation.' Historic Savannah Foundation CEO/President to step down Attendees are invited to explore 'Life in a Port City' at this year's first Family Day at the Davenport House on Sunday, March 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Presented in partnership with Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, this event will feature immersive activities celebrating Savannah's fascinating maritime history. Children and adults will learn how life in a bustling port city impacted Savannahians for generations, including master carpenter Isaiah Davenport, his family and the enslaved individuals who resided at the Davenport House in the 1820s. In addition, guests can enjoy refreshing treats from Savannah Square Pops in the beautiful garden at the Davenport House as well as face painting by talented local artist Mars Tadeo. The second Family Day at the Davenport House will take place during National Historic Preservation Month on Sunday, May 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Guests will explore the fascinating world of historic preservation in a family-friendly atmosphere featuring interactive activities and hands-on learning opportunities. Children can meet award-winning preservation experts and handle real tools and materials used in the field. Attendees of all ages will gain a deeper understanding of the important role preservation plays in maintaining Savannah's charm and historical integrity. Family Days at the Davenport House are also scheduled for Sunday, July 27 and Sunday, September 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Themes and additional event details will be announced at a later date. Davenport House Museum offers artistic workshops
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Historic Savannah Foundation and the Davenport House Museum announce the 2025 Artisan Spotlight Series schedule, which will showcase immersive, creative workshops at the revitalized Historic Kennedy Pharmacy, located at 323 E. Broughton Street in Savannah, Ga. The Artisan Spotlight Series, which originally launched in Spring 2024, offers engaging, hands-on events and provides a dynamic platform for artists and artisans to share their creative processes with local residents and visitors. 'We're pleased with the number of participants who have come to Historic Kennedy Pharmacy to learn a new skill or gain a deeper appreciation for the creative work of local artists,' said Davenport House Museum Executive Director Danielle Hodes, who organizes the Artisan Spotlight Series. 'Our upcoming workshops shine a light on historic techniques, like embroidery, crocheting and ice cream making.' The Artisan Spotlight Series will offer creative workshops for all skill levels, including: REVIVING CROCHET TRADITIONS WITH SAMANTHA MACK Tuesday, February 18 | 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Discover the timeless art of crochet in the historic setting of the Davenport House Museum. Local fiber artist Samantha Mack will host a beginner's crochet circle, sharing a brief history of the popular 19th-century craft and demonstrating basic stitches. Participants can try their hand at creating a classic 'granny square,' which is a versatile pattern used for blankets, pillows and clothing. Suitable for newcomers as well as experienced crocheters looking for guidance on a current project, this hands-on workshop is a wonderful opportunity to connect, create and learn in an inspiring, supportive environment. ABSTRACT ACRYLIC PAINTING WITH PAIGE BYRNE Saturday, March 1 | 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Explore the dynamic world of abstract acrylic painting in a beginner-friendly workshop led by Savannah, Ga. artist and educator Paige Byrne. Known for her vibrant compositions that connect the past and present, Byrne will help participants unleash their creativity and find their own artistic voice. Perfect for beginners and art enthusiasts, this workshop will teach techniques for layering color, texture and form and result in one-of-a-kind creations that participants can take home and display. Ideal for beginners and embroidery enthusiasts, all participants will be guided through the process of stitching a small replica of the Davenport House Museum, blending history and art into a unique keepsake. MOTHER'S DAY SCRUB-MAKING WORKSHOP WITH SALACIA SALTS Sunday, May 10 | 11 a.m. to noon Celebrate Mother's Day with a relaxing experience at the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy.
