Arrests And Impounds Following Tangi In Gisborne

Press Release – New Zealand Police At least four individuals were arrested or summonsed for public display of gang insignia and will appear in court in the coming days. Police have made several arrests and impounded vehicles following a gang tangi in Gisborne, attended by up to 400 gang members and associates. The significant operation saw local Police supported by staff from neighbouring Districts including the Police Eagle helicopter, Tairāwhiti Area Commander Inspector Danny Kirk said. 'Our focus today was the safety of the Gisborne community and those attending the tangi. In the lead up to today's event, Police have been engaging with the family of the deceased, and gang leaders, who have passed on the message that we would be highly visible and enforcing the law. 'It's disappointing to see some people choosing to break the law, but that number is small compared to how many people were attending the tangi. A big part of that can be put down to the engagement we've had with gang leaders and the responsibility that they took for regulating the behaviour of their members.' At least four individuals were arrested or summonsed for public display of gang insignia and will appear in court in the coming days. One motorbike rider failed to stop twice for Police following a sustained loss of traction. The bike was recovered and has been impounded for six months. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the rider. Another three vehicles have been impounded for 28 days, two for dangerous driving, and one for driving while suspended. Several people were also seen leaning out of the windows of vehicles. Police are aware of their identities and will be following up with them. 'While the tangi may have finished, our work to enforce the law has not. 'Additional Police will be working through the night across Gisborne, carrying out reassurance patrols in the community and monitoring driving behaviour on our roads,' Inspector Kirk said. Police encourage anyone who witnessed illegal or intimidating behaviour around the tangi to make a report online or call 105. Please reference the file number 250511/1622. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police estimated up to 400 gang members and associates attended the funeral. It said at least four people were arrested for public display of gang insignia, and will be appearing in court in the coming days. One motorbike has been impounded for six months after failing to stop twice for police. Three other vehicles have also been impounded for 28 days - two of those were due to dangerous driving, and one was due to a person driving while suspended. Police said they would be following up with people who were seen leaning out of the windows of vehicles. "While the tangi may have finished, our work to enforce the law has not," Tairāwhiti area commander inspector Danny Kirk said. Kirk said police had been engaging with the family of the deceased and gang leaders in the lead up to the event, which he believed had a part to play in the small number of arrests for an event with such a large attendance. He said additional police officers would be carrying out reassurance patrols and monitoring driving behaviour across Gisborne on Monday night. Extra police on patrol in Gisborne ahead of gang member's tangi

[rnz_online] Photo: RNZ / Cole Eastham-Farrelly Police say there will be extra officers patrolling Gisborne on Monday ahead of a tangi for a patched gang member. Tairāwhiti Area Commander Danny Kirk said a large number of gang members and associates are expected in Gisborne for the tangi. "Extra staff from neighbouring police districts will be in Tairāwhiti, ensuring we can respond to any scenario that threatens public safety," said Kirk. In addition to extra police staff, he said, the police helicopter will provide aerial support. "We are mindful of providing a space for whānau and friends to grieve peacefully while balancing the safety of the community," said Kirk. He said police have been in contact with local gang leaders to outline their expectations, including around the wearing or displaying of gang insignia in public. Kirk said they had also been in touch with the whānau of the deceased. "Our focus is on the safety of everyone. We will not tolerate behaviour that aims to threaten or intimidate, and officers will be working to reduce disruption to the public," said Kirk. "Police will have extra patrols around Gisborne and the wider area, including on the roads. Even if we can't take enforcement action on the day, staff will follow up." He said anyone with immediate concerns for their safety should call police on 111.
