Danny Meyer Is Opening a Members-Only Restaurant in Manhattan

How many more private dining clubs can Manhattan take? Apparently, at least one more: Moss, a coming-soon members spot off of Bryant Park, at 520 Fifth Avenue, is the latest to throw its hat into the ring. It's been separating itself from the pack over the past year, targeting a younger downtown community of food people, who have hosted various events at their Midtown space to drum up awareness before Moss officially debuts in the fall. But when it opens, they're going with an established food team: Babette, by prolific powerhouse restaurateur Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality events team, will be launching at the five-floor Moss property. Makes sense since, after all, this is a members club in Midtown, in an area where many are familiar with and probably customers of Meyer's properties, from Ci Siamo to Gramercy Tavern. The dining 'concept,' as it was described by a spokesperson, will be joined by perks like a 'vitality pool,' Turkish baths, a yoga and pilates suite, a pickleball court, as well as 'grooming lounges,' and a hi-fi listening room. No word yet on the food for Babette, Eater has reached out for more information. A new name in ice cream The Infatuation has the scoop on Nun Left, a new Harlem pint business that comes from Jane Brendlinger, a food writer and Per Se pastry chef, per the review. Ordered via Instagram DM, these are pricier than a supermarket brand at $15, but with extremely fun flavors such as Thai tea brownie and princess cake. Restaurant team rises again Citroën, a bistro in Greenpoint that closed in late 2024 due to landlord disputes, has decided that instead of trying to relaunch the name elsewhere in North Brooklyn, they're opening something new. Greenpointers reports the team will debut the Sparrow, an 'Art Deco cocktail bar and restaurant,' in a kitchen led by Carlos Despradel, a Nomad and Clocktower alum. It's coming to 185 Broadway, at Driggs Avenue, in Williamsburg, in August. Sign up for our newsletter.

Retail Roundup: Shake Shack among new stores coming to Broward shopping village

The burger wars keep raging in South Florida. Squeezing into space crowded by Five Guys, BRGR Stop, BurgerFi, Culver's, Char-Hut, Jack's Old Fashion, Sonic, mainstays McDonald's, Checkers, Wendy's, Burger King, and others, up-and-comer Shake Shack plans to bring its nostalgic take on burgers, fries and milkshakes to its 13th South Florida location during the second quarter of 2026. Kimco Realty, owners of Dania Pointe, announced that the rapidly growing burger chain would be among four new retailers scheduled to open in the 102-acre shopping village west of Interstate 95 and just south of Stirling Road. The chain, on a march to quadruple its unit count, ended the first quarter of 2025 with 589 restaurants, according to the industry website Aiming to reach 1,500 locations, the company recently announced deals to open 10 restaurants across the United States and Canada and 12 units in Panama. Founded by restaurateur Danny Meyer and his Union Square Hospitality Group, the first Shake Shack outside of New York City opened on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach back in 2010. Food writers were excited about its debut. The Miami Herald proclaimed that 'NYC's famed hot spot' was 'ready to rock our worlds.' It warned patrons to bring a magazine to pass time waiting in long lines to get in. 'That is if you can concentrate on reading with all those overwhelming aromas,' the paper said. The new arrival was mentioned in more than a dozen Herald stories that summer along with a three-and-a-half star review that ran weekly in its Dining section. Miami-Dade's second Shake Shack opened in Coral Gables in 2012. By then, the company had expanded to 16 locations. The following year, a third South Florida Shake Shack opened across from Florida Atlantic University on Glades Road in Boca Raton. Reviewing the restaurant for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the late John Tanasychuk compared the 'flawless restaurant experience' to visiting drive-in restaurants with his grandmother and siblings during his youth. Tanasychuk praised the efficiency of the workers, the ratio of bun to burger, and even the toppings that 'compliment instead of overwhelm each bite.' When Broward County's first Shake Shack arrived in December 2019 on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, the chain boasted 140 restaurants in the United States, as well as in numerous other countries. Today, the chain offers all-natural Angus beef burgers prepared in a variety of ways, including an Avocado Bacon Burger, a Carolina BBQ Burger, and burgers that include a fried portobello mushroom. Patrons can choose fried chicken sandwiches, white-meat chicken 'bites,' Vienna beef hot dogs, and crinkle-cut fries topped with ranch dressing, cheddar and American cheese, and bacon. New on Shake Shack menus this year are side orders of crispy fried dill pickles — touted as the first new side order offered by the company. To top off your meal, there are plenty of choices of shakes, floats, and freshly made frozen custards. A New York favorite was just ranked one of the best burger chains in the U.S.

New Yorkers know that a grilled patty and side of fries make easy—yet deliciously umami-packed—meals on the go. Top-notch burgers are in such high demand that not one but two new joints just opened in downtown Manhattan: newcomer NADC only serves Wagyu, while Westchester import Deux Luxe flips a French Onion version. But which restaurants serve the best burgers in NYC? According to a new ranking by Yelp, 25 chains top the charts across the country, including a longtime New York favorite. To hype "International Burger Day" on May 28, the restaurant review platform announced the most popular burgers in America, including both beloved brands and emerging stars. Sitting pretty at No. 5 nationally, and (unsurprisingly) No. 1 in the Northeast, is Shake Shack. Despite falling behind longtime nemesis In-N-Out, which leads the pack in America overall, Shake Shack is the first-choice burger in more states than any other brand, claiming the top spot in 21 states as well as Washington, D.C. Danny Meyer 's first foray began as a humble hot dog cart in Madison Square Park before blossoming into an international sensation thanks to fresh ingredients, chef-driven recipes (we ranked every menu item!) and forward-thinking flair. Today, the O.G. Shack location boasts more than 5,800 reviews on Yelp, while its Theatre District locale earned a place on the site's Top 100 Burgers in America. So what's everyone ordering? The ShackBurger doused in secret "Shack Sauce" stays in the spotlight, but crispy crinkle-cut fries and creamy frozen custards—in rotating seasonal flavors —and even the portobello ''Shroom Burger' keep guests coming back for more. Maybe the new fried pickles will help them blow away more competition next year? We're still not sure how In-N-Out edged us out, though it could be the consistent (if not blasé) menu since 1948 and nostalgic drive-thru vibes. To qualify for the ranking, burger brands needed more than 100 locations that operate in multiple states and are primarily categorized under 'burgers' on Yelp. So tell us: What's your go-to burger order?

Yes, chef! Behind the scenes of restaurateur Danny Meyer's checkless payment technology

Hello and welcome to Modern CEO! I'm Stephanie Mehta, CEO and chief content officer of Mansueto Ventures. Each week this newsletter explores inclusive approaches to leadership drawn from conversations with executives and entrepreneurs, and from the pages of Inc. and Fast Company. If you received this newsletter from a friend, you can sign up to get it yourself every Monday morning. For years, famed restaurateur Danny Meyer has wanted to reinvent the way diners pay their bills. He's dreamed of a world in which patrons can pay for their meals and simply walk out of an eatery without asking and waiting for the check. Meyer's vision for frictionless payments found its way to Frank Bisignano, who served as CEO of Fiserv, the financial services technology provider, until becoming commissioner of the Social Security Administration earlier this year. By 2020, the two executives hatched an idea for a checkless solution that would enable diners to settle their restaurant tabs without taking out a credit card or phone. It then fell to Krystle Mobayeni, a senior vice president and head of restaurants at Fiserv, and Kelly Macpherson, chief technology officer of Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), to build the software and systems that would bring their bosses' idea to life. The result is a system called Checkless Payments, which the companies announced last week at the National Restaurant Association Show. It isn't unusual for the top executive at a company to be the driver of innovation, especially at entrepreneurial or founder-led organizations. Nearly half the respondents to a 2024 Fast Company survey of its Most Innovative Companies honorees said their CEO was in charge of innovation, and 60% said their top innovation executive reported directly to the CEO. INNOVATOR IN CHIEF Since founding Manhattan's Union Square Café in 1985, Meyer has been a force in the hospitality industry. He was an early adopter of online reservations and has served on OpenTable's advisory board. USHG, where Meyer is executive chairman, has expanded beyond restaurants to include Hospitality Quotient, a consulting and professional development arm. In 2017, he launched Enlightened Hospitality Investments, a private equity fund that backs businesses that share his values around taking care of employees and customers. 'I've made a career out of driving some people crazy, but in a nice way,' Meyer says. 'If [an innovation] was easy, it would've been done already.' With Checkless Payments, Meyer challenged the USHG and Fiserv teams to develop a solution that was elegant enough for fine-dining establishments. He didn't want patrons to have to take out their phones to scan a QR code to pay; nor was it practical to set up sensors or other hardware that are part of checkout-free experiences at Amazon Go stores and other retailers. And he didn't want a 'walled garden' that would require customers to use only one kind of credit card or mobile operating system. He also wanted a system that could eventually be extended to other aspects of hospitality, enabling dinners to, say, alert the coat check room or valet that they are getting ready to leave the restaurant, letting them retrieve their belongings or car without waiting. Checkless transactions can benefit not just diners but restaurants, too. Meyer notes that the cumulative time servers and diners spend could instead be used to 'turn' tables—restaurant-speak for setting, seating, serving, and clearing a table. And Fiserv's Mobayeni says restaurants can use the checkless enrollment process for deeper customer engagement. 'They can let guests know there's a featured menu item or they have a special wine,' she says. She envisions a day when diners might use the platform to place their first drink order in advance, which also helps the restaurant operate more efficiently. IT'S NOT 'DINE AND DASH' USHG's Macpherson admits that diners may need some coaching on the new system, which was piloted at Manhatta, the group's fine-dining restaurant in New York's financial district. 'Even when I was using it there was this stigma of 'dining and dashing,'' she says. Servers, too, will have to adopt a new etiquette. Says Meyer: 'If I'm a guest, here's what I'd want my server to say at some point: 'I know you're part of the [Checkless Payments] program, and I hope I'm going to have a chance to thank you and say goodbye, but you're welcome to leave any time you want.'' USHG will begin rolling out the program at additional restaurants this summer. Fiserv, which last year reported revenue of more than $20 billion, will then make Checkless Payments available to customers of its new Clover Hospitality point-of-sale system for upscale restaurants. I asked Macpherson what it is like to work for an executive chairman who is also an innovator with a reputation for high quality. 'It's inspirational and exciting,' she says. 'Danny is a beacon in the industry, pushing us and challenging us to think bigger. I like thinking big, too. How can we do what people might say is the impossible?'

Olo jumps after Bloomberg says company exploring possible sale

Shares of Olo (OLO) are up 69c, or 11%, in early Thursday trading to $6.89 after Bloomberg published an article last night stating that the company is exploring a potential sale of its business. The restaurant software provider, which counts restaurateur Danny Meyer and The Raine Group among its backers, is working with a financial adviser to help it gauge interest from potential buyers, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg's Ryan Gould. The company could appeal to industry players such as rival Toast (TOST) as well as Oracle (ORCL), which in 2014 acquired restaurant and retail technology provider Micros Systems for $5.3B, the sources are reported to have said.
