Southampton close in on appointment of Will Still as head coach

Southampton are accelerating plans to appoint Will Still as their head coach. If Saints make sufficient progress in the coming days, they hope the 32-year-old will be in the stands when they host Arsenal on Sunday. Still, born in Belgium to English parents, left the Ligue 1 side Lens last week citing personal reasons and a desire to be closer to family in England. He took his steps into coaching at Preston's academy, during an internship from a college course, but has spent all of his professional career in Belgium and France, also working at Sint-Truiden, Beerschot, Lierse and Reims. Southampton's technical director, Johannes Spors, has been leading the search for Ivan Juric's successor while the first-team coach and former Under-21s coach Simon Rusk has led the team on an interim basis. Saints host Arsenal in their final game of a miserable season but have avoided the ignominy of failing to beat Derby's record-low Premier League points tally. Still is viewed as a potentially exciting appointment and a highly promising coach. Compensation with Lens for his staff remains to be agreed. Among others on Southampton's list has been the Sheffield Wednesday manager and former Saints assistant, Danny Röhl, whom Spors knows from their time at RB Leipzig, though the pair did not work together directly. Saints looked into appointing Röhl after sacking Russell Martin last December. The 36-year-old now has strong interest from Bundesliga clubs and is expected to leave Hillsborough after almost two years in the job.

Southampton hold talks with Will Still and Tom Cleverley in hunt for new manager

Southampton's search for a new manager has seen them hold talks with Tom Cleverley and Will Still. Danny Röhl, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, is also in the running for the job. Southampton are looking to rebuild after their relegation to the Championship and are thought to have identified a handful of leading candidates to manage them next season. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Cleverley is available following his departure from Watford and is thought to have made a good impression during talks over the role. Sources close to the former Manchester United midfielder believe he has a strong chance of being appointed by Southampton, who placed Simon Rusk in caretaker charge after firing Ivan Juric. Cleverley, 35, is seen as one of the most promising young English coaches. There is competition from Still, who has announced that he is leaving Lens for 'personal reasons'. The 32-year-old Englishman has cited a desire to be closer to his family. Still's girlfriend, the Sky Sports presenter Emma Saunders, revealed in March that she has been diagnosed with encephalitis. There is a chance Still will land a job when he moves back to England. He has been approached by Southampton and there is confidence that a deal can be struck. There are still details to iron out with Lens before anything can advance. Southampton are also considering Röhl, who has impressed at Wednesday. There are suggestions that the 36-year-old German will look to leave the Hillsborough club this summer. Southampton, who will be Everton's opponents in their final ever men's game at Goodison Park on Sunday, have endured a terrible season in the Premier League. They have avoided setting a new record for the lowest points tally in the competition's history but have otherwise had little to cheer. Russell Martin, who led them to promotion via the play-offs last season, was sacked in December after his expansive style failed to work. Martin's replacement, Juric, was unable to inspire an improvement after his appointment.

Rangers-linked manager Danny Röhl has 'informed' EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday that he intends to leave the club this summer, as per reports. The 36-year-old German head coach saw his odds of becoming the new Rangers manager increase this week, with the bookies rating him as a dark-horse contender for the vacant role at Ibrox amid the club's impending takeover from a US consortium led fronted by Andrew Cavenagh, and backed by 49ers Enterprises. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rated as one of the best young coaches in Europe, Röhl masterminded an incredible escape from relegation during the 2023/24 season at Hillsborough, securing survival on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win at Sunderland despite being seven points adrift of safety and struggling with no wins in 10 games when he was appointed in October. The Owls finished in 12th place this season. While ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard and former Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose are rated as the current favourites for the Rangers job, reports of interest in Röhl gained further traction when he spoke openly about his desire to move on from the club, admitting he 'very excited' for the summer ahead in a revealing interview with RB Leipzig-focused blog RBLive, the club where he began his coaching career. 'I've always said that I'm very grateful to Sheffield for the opportunity I've been given there,' said Röhl, who also enjoyed a stint as Bayern Munich's assistant manager. 'I'm someone who always wants to develop the club further, and to do that, you have to weigh up how far that's still possible or whether the maximum has perhaps already been reached under the current conditions. 'I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. I'm currently very excited to see what happens this summer.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
