Bad plastic surgery? Pastelitos obsession? 6 Miami moments in new Netflix show
Miami is a town of alligators and hurricanes and bad boob jobs — in real life and on a new Netflix medical drama called 'Pulse.' The fictional show follows third-year medical resident Dr. Danny Simms of Homestead as she competes for a doctor leadership position at a trauma center. 'Pulse' isn't a show so much about Miami, but it's filled with plenty of those 'So Miami' moments. Here are some of the ones we've spotted: The hospital on 'Pulse' Maguire Medical Center isn't a real medical center in Miami. But it's clearly trying to make you think of Ryder Trauma Center, part of Jackson Health System, Miami-Dade's public hospital network. Maguire sees all types of emergencies, just like Jackson. Both are Level 1 trauma centers, which means they're equipped to handle the most complex injuries, including those that require specialty care, around the clock. Both are in the Magic City. And both have some UM flare going on. Jackson Memorial is the teaching hospital of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. And just like it's common to see UHealth medical residents at Jackson's medical Miami campus, Maguire has its own character repping the U. Fashionable three-year medical student Camila Perez is sometimes seen sporting a white coat with the UM Miller School of Medicine logo. While some parts of 'Pulse' were filmed in Miami-Dade County, Jackson said no scenes were shot at the hospital, even a helipad scene with a county rescue chopper landing on Maguire's roof. The Chisme Queen Word gets around fast in Maguire. And the chisme culture is real, especially when it comes to Dr. Simms' complicated relationship with her boss and chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips. And senior ER Nurse Cass Himmelstein is like that tia who has the tea on everyone. Except Himmelstein tends to use her grapevine powers to mainly help out Dr. Tom Cole, a British second-year surgery resident. Cole is the handsome, non-committal Miami playboy who your best friend warns you about. A hurricane trashed his BMW. He's trying to impress senior surgeon Dr. Ruben Soriano. And he has a soft spot for patients, especially a certain Miami-Dade EMT. 'So Miami' medical emergencies Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's ambulances and helicopters make several appearances throughout the show, especially when Miami-Dade County EMT Nia Washington's heroic actions during a hurricane end with her under Cole's care. And while some 'Pulse' medical emergencies are typical for a hospital, others sound more like Miami problems. Figuring out how to treat patients during a hurricane blackout with limited power supply? Check. A botched boob job and liposuction procedure by a private plastic surgeon? Check. And let's not forget the 'Florida Special' — alligator bite. Triple check. Sounds like Miami all around. Spanglish is everywhere Speaking of Miami things, it can't be the 305 without a good dose of Spanglish. Whether it's talking to patients who only speak Spanish or arguing among themselves, characters jump from English to Spanish somewhat frequently, including Soriano and Dr. Natalie Cruz, chair of surgery and emergency medicine. 'We wanted some actors with authority that would lead this hospital, and we wanted them to be Latino doctors because this is Miami. And Miami is really a Latin city,' co-showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse said in a Netflix blog post. While we haven't heard any characters use 'pero like' or 'Dale' yet on the show, you can scratch off 'super pesada' from your Miami English bingo. 'Pulse' films in Miami Beach, other parts of Miami area If you're like us, there's a certain thrill in recognizing Miami background scenes while watching the show. The nightlife of South Beach, PortMiami's bridge with its view of the downtown skyline, and the Venetian Causeway that connects the mainland to Miami Beach are just some spots to watch for. 'Pulse' also filmed in several Miami-Dade neighborhoods, including El Portal and South Miami-Dade, according to Miami-Dade County's Film and Entertainment Office. What about the beach where a Miami-Dade chopper drops off Simms and Phillips for an emergency situation involving swimmers? It's Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Pastelitos obsession Like in many Miami workplaces, you'll find Maguire's doctors and nurses bickering over who gets the last pastelito. The pastelitos of Versailles, a popular tourist hotspot and the backdrop of South Florida political rallies, even got a mention, though some thoughts on the restaurant's pastries might insult some. But what we really want to know is: Where are the croquetas? READ NEXT: Mountains in Miami? What Netflix series 'Griselda' got right or wrong about local scenes

What's New On Netflix In April 2025: 10 Best TV Shows And Films To Stream
In the first quarter of 2025, Netflix presented us with some of the most talked-about shows of the year so far, from hard-hitting conversation starters like Toxic Town and, of course, Adolescence to gripping series like Zero Day, Missing You and The Night Agent, as well as light-hearted offerings like The Residence and With Love, Meghan. Well, it's a new month, and that means new shows to look forward to on the platform. And if you're a fan of unconventional reality series, unpredictable true crime stories or family comedies, we've got some good news – not to mention the return of two of Netflix's most bankable shows. Here are our top picks of what to stream this April… Tell me more: The five-time Emmy-winning dating show about people with autism looking for romance is back for a third season. Love On The Spectrum is bringing back some familiar faces this time around, picking up from where we last saw them on their quest for romance, while also introducing some exciting new additions, only broadening the stories being told in one of Netflix's most critically-acclaimed and heartening reality shows. Netflix says: 'The search for true love continues as newcomers and returning favorites navigate the ups and downs of dating on the autism spectrum.' Tell me more: Definitely one for fans of Grey's Anatomy and E.R. to check out, Netflix is trying its hand at a glossy new medical drama. Pulse takes place in a Florida hospital in the middle of a disaster, and while it may have had a lukewarm response from critics, it's already creeping up the platform's most-watched shows list. Netflix: 'As a hurricane barrels towards Miami's busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms is unexpectedly thrust into a promotion when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips is suspended. 'Amid the worsening storm and an onslaught of trauma cases, the hospital goes into lockdown, and Danny and Phillips must find a way to work together – even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them begin to spill out. 'The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. Because for this tight-knit group of doctors, saving their patients' lives is often less complicated than living their own.' Tell me more: In many ways, Black Mirror is going back to its roots (or, at least, those glory days of seasons three and four) with its latest crop of dystopian tales, which serve as more straightforward fables for the pitfalls of our modern world than some of the show's latterday instalments. However, that being said, this season is also the most star-studded to date, featuring appearances from former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, The Crown's Emma Corrin, Bridesmaids actor Chris O'Dowd and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti among a string of others. As well as a brief appearance from a returning Black Mirror A-lister, this season also marks the first time Charlie Brooker has written a sequel to an existing episode, with the USS Callister from season four being revisited. Netflix says: 'Lose your mind. Lose your reality. The Emmy Award winning series returns with six new stories. Nothing is as it seems.' Tell me more: Alright, if you're not already familiar with Pop The Balloon, the format began its life as a low-budget YouTube series in which singletons were introduced to a host of prospective dates holding balloons, which they would pop if they weren't interested in. In the past two years, the format has become a global smash, with Netflix reimagining it as a one-off live event, featuring a cast of 'reality stars and everyday singles'. Of course, here in the UK, the time difference might make it a hard one to watch live, but you'll be able to watch what promises to be a chaotic broadcast back from the following morning. Netflix says: 'Reality stars and everyday singles test their romantic chemistry in this live dating experiment hosted by Yvonne Orji.' Tell me more: The return of Stranger Things for its fifth and final outing later this year is one of the most-anticipated moments in Netflix history. Let's face it, it feels like an eternity since we last visited Hawkins, Indiana, and most of the teenage cast are now in their 20s. To tide fans over until the show's return, a stage prequel to the show opened in the West End in 2023, with plans to bring it to Broadway later this month. Behind The Curtain charts the show's opening in London, and gives Broadway audiences (and those who've still not managed to see it in the West End, or simply don't want to fork out for a ticket) a taster of what they can expect. Netflix says: 'With special behind-the-scenes access, follow the cast and crew of Stranger Things: The First Shadow as they race against time to prepare the ambitious, boundary-pushing stage show for its West End debut amid mounting fan and critic anticipation.' Tell me more: Netflix has become known for its true crime documentaries (some of them hits, some of them misses), with The Diamond Heist telling the story of a group of London jewel thieves in their attempts to steal a diamond on display at the Millennium Dome at the turn of the century. Fans of The Gentlemen will be excited to hear that The Diamond Heist is exec produced by Guy Ritchie, meaning the true story is probably going to be told in an unconventional way. Netflix says: 'It's summer 2000. A group of South-East London criminals are orchestrating what just might be the most audacious heist of all time. Their plan: use a bulldozer to ram-raid the brand new Millennium Dome in broad daylight, steal the world's second biggest flawless diamond in a haul worth £350 million, and escape by speedboat down the Thames. 'There's just one tiny problem: the Flying Squad are watching.' Tell me more: If there's one thing Netflix loves, it's a cross-platform moment. Battle Camp pits stars from across some of its biggest reality shows – including Love Is Blind, The Circle, Too Hot To Handle and even Squid Game: The Challenge – against one another in a string of physical challenges at a makeshift summer camp to try and win a hefty cash prize of $250,000. Netflix says: 'In Battle Camp, the greatest stars from across Netflix's broad slate of reality and doc-series return to face the ultimate physical and mental competition, where a giant spinning wheel randomly decides who stays and who goes. 'In order to keep your name off that wheel, our returning fan favorites need to be unbeatable in high octane challenges, unbreakable in grueling punishments and, last but certainly not least, unhateable in camp, as everyone has a vote. The player who achieves all three, becomes the ultimate Netflix reality competitor and takes home the $250,000 prize.' Tell me more: is back for his last ever outing as Joe Goldberg in the last season of You, which is once again set in New York Time Around. While Joe is attempting to move on from his past actions, some familiar faces from his history look set to make that an impossibility, as he winds up pondering a lapse back to his old ways. All we can say is to expect twists aplenty. Netflix says: 'In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after… until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.' Tell me more: This gritty detective drama centres around a disillusioned police officer tasked with saving a politician's son after a drug deal goes wrong. Frankly, you had us at Tom Hardy. Netflix says: 'After a drug deal gone wrong, a bruised detective must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, while unravelling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.' Tell me more: With a new Smurfs movie on the horizon, a live-action Scooby Doo revival having just been announced and Netflix already diving into the Spongebob-verse with a string of stand-alone stories, the revisiting of childhood faves continues with Asterix & Obelix in a brand new animated series. Netflix says: 'When the village druid forgets how to prepare their magic potion, Asterix, Obelix and the Gauls must find new ways to keep the Roman conquerors at bay.' 27 Behind-The-Scenes Secrets You Probably Didn't Know About How Adolescence Was Filmed Thought The Stars Of The Residence Looked Familiar? ‘Pulse' Trailer: A Complicated Love Story Gets Put on Hold in Netflix's New Medical Drama
Netflix's first foray into English language medical dramas, 'Pulse,' does not skip a beat in its first trailer. Two medical attendants get caught kissing by a nurse, a hurricane forces the whole hospital to step up and, of course, a patient's life is saved. As a hurricane barrels towards Miami's busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted when chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell), the man she's developing feelings for, is suspended. When cases start to pile up in the middle of the storm, Danny and Phillips must put their flirtation aside and focus on their patients under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. Watch the full trailer, here: Danny then proves her prowess as a resident when she completes a procedure on a pregnant woman without an ultrasound when the power goes out. Still, the series does find levity in the midst of the chaos. When one resident's car gets destroyed by a fallen tree, his friend responds with its 'time of death.' Zoe Robyn is the creator of the medical procedural and is co-showrunner with Carlton Cuse. Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman, Kate Dennis, Cuse and Robyn all serve as executive producers as well. Fitzgerald and Woodell star as the series' lead love interests, but Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, Jessy Yates, Chelsea Muirhead and Daniela Nieves fill out the series regular cast with featured performances from Néstor Carbonell, Jessica Rothe, Santiago Segura, Ash Santos and Arturo Del Puerto. 'Pulse' premieres April 2 on Netflix. The post 'Pulse' Trailer: A Complicated Love Story Gets Put on Hold in Netflix's New Medical Drama appeared first on TheWrap.

The NHL Hockey of Legends Tour is making a stop in the small community on the Northern Peninsula and it's a big deal, says Roddickton-Bide Arm hockey player Danny Simms. Rich and Ron Sutter are among the former pros who will face off against regular Joes, and even some minor hockey players, on Saturday, Feb. 1.
