Copper Cove Golf Club owners 'devastated,' by Friday fire

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Friday morning fire heavily impacted the golf cart barn and pool system at Franklin County's Copper Cove Golf Club, just a week ahead of Memorial Day. 'First and foremost, we're glad that no one was hurt,' said co-owner Kelly Crovo, who also serves as the club's PGA general manager. 'All the other stuff can be replaced, and we're going to do everything we can to do that.' Crovo said the fire claimed their entire fleet of golf carts. 'This is quite devastating to be frank,' he said. 'If the clubhouse burned down and the carts didn't, we'd be better off. Because the carts are what we make money on. Without any carts, there is no revenue.' The cart barn also housed the club's pool system and restrooms, both of which were also heavily damaged. Crovo said that was especially disappointing, as they are now unsure when or if the pool will be able to open this summer, which impacts additional members of the community. Fires move fast, so should you: Danville FD gives tips on fire safety 'We've already hired people for pool attendants and lifeguards,' he said. 'So it affects not only us. It affects people in the community. A lot of people, this is what their income is, so it's a little rough right now.' Crovo said that projecting timelines for when certain services will be back online is still difficult, as they make their way through the extent of the damage and work to determine the cause of the fire. He said they will have a better idea of what the next few weeks will hold after meeting with insurance on Monday. For the time being, the club has arranged for rental carts to arrive this Wednesday, and they are hoping to be open for Memorial Day Weekend. The driving range and golf course remain open, and folks can still walk the course. 'We appreciate everyone who comes out and plays,' said Crovo. 'We'd love to have more. I feel like the golf course is in the best shape it's been since we owned it.' They ask that anyone interested in playing call the pro shop for scheduling while their online reservation system is temporarily down. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – The Danville Fire Department is advising residents on how to handle a house fire with facts while busting myths to help increase community safety. The Danville Fire Department wants to warn residents that fires spread faster than expected, and stopping to grab things can leave you stuck or not able to see as smoke can fill the home quickly. Myth: 'If my house is on fire, I have plenty of time to grab a few things before I leave.' Seasonal 4 PM Burning Law begins Feb. 15 Fact: A fire can double in size every 30 seconds! You may have less than 2 minutes to escape safely. Every second counts—get out immediately and leave belongings behind! Consider the following tips to stay safe in case of a fire: Here's what to do to stay safe: Make an escape plan – Know two ways out of every room and practice it with your family. Get low and go – Smoke rises, so stay close to the ground where the air is clearer. Close doors behind you – This slows the fire's spread. Never go back inside – Once you're out, stay out and call 911. Danville FD wants to spread the word to ensure the safety of community members. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
