Danville Rotary Club selling flag donations for Memorial Day tradition

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Danville Rotary Club is looking to keep an annual tradition alive with support from the public. For the last 25 years, the club has lined the streets of Danville with American flags on Memorial Day. The flags, donated by the public, include the name of a deceased servicemember or anyone whom the donor chooses, civilian or military. Danville High School students network at career fair This year's flags are available for purchase through May 19. The proceeds will go toward the Vermilion County War Museum, the Sparky Songer Scholarship at DACC and community projects by the Danville Rotary Club. To purchase flags, visit or download and mail the following forms for individual sponsorship or corporate sponsorship. DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Students at Danville High School were able to talk with businesses and universities to prepare them for a better future. Thursday was the SKILLS USA Career Fair, a program focusing on helping students network. Even though it's only the second year the school has hosted this, more than 30 vendors were there, and students said they left with a ton of new information. Danville community college holding annual career fair Students like senior Tayvion Diltz is getting a chance to build a connection and an morning, Danville High School hosted their SKILLS USA Career Fair. 'You know, if you didn't know what you wanted to do and whatnot, they would definitely help you here,' Diltz said. 'And I think this is a great opportunity for everybody.' This is the second year the school has hosted this event. Teacher Joseph Wernert said it focuses on opening up doors for students. 'So, we're getting them in front of businesses that say, 'hey, these are the soft skills that you need. These are the sort of introductory level things we want you to have seen before you come to us.'' Hundreds of students showed up to visit more than 30 vendors at the career fair. Diltz was lucky enough to experience this twice. He said last year he didn't know what career field he wanted to dive into, but this year he was prepared. Hoopeston schools plan E-Learning day due to boil order 'I want to experience what it's like in athletic training and kinesiology and what that's like for a different career perspective from somebody who's actually experienced it and whatnot,' Diltz said. And Wernert said those are the ideas he wants all of the students to think about. 'Because a lot of times there's more than one way to get there,' Wernert said. 'And it's not cookie cutter, so these kids need to have these conversations outside of just the classroom space.' As for Diltz, he said the career fair couldn't have been any better. He was able turn in a few resumes, and he hopes this will encourage other students to take advantage of opportunities like this. 'Because we have more teachers who are willing to work with us and get organizations like this to set up with everything,' Diltz said. He also said his plan is to attend the University of Illinois to study kinesiology. Skills USA is an organization that empowers students to become skilled professionals. Lindsay Light, Licensure Specialist for the Vermilion County Regional Office of Education #54, has been recognized by the Illinois Education Association (IEA) and the National Education Association (NEA) for her exceptional dedication and significant contributions to the school districts within the region. She will be honored at the annual Friends and Advocates Banquet (FAB) on April 28. The FAB event, hosted by IEA Regions 8 & 9, celebrates individuals who have made a profound impact on education. Light's nomination, submitted by Daniel R. Hile, leader of Career and Technical Education (CTE) at Danville High School (DHS), highlighted her crucial role in navigating the complex licensure process for skilled professionals seeking to become teachers in high-demand areas. 'Lindsay Light has been a beacon of hope over the past many years that we have worked with her to help quality women and men become licensed to teach at Career & Technical Education at DHS,' Hile said in his nomination. 'In a time of critical teacher shortages, particularly in CTE, Lindsay's expertise and dedication have been invaluable.' The nomination emphasized the challenges faced by Danville schools in staffing growing CTE programs, including Family and Consumer Sciences, Business Education, Computer Education, Work Based Learning, and Industrial Technology. Mrs. Light's ability to guide industry professionals through alternative licensure routes has been instrumental in filling these vital positions. Testimonials from educators at Danville High School further underscored Light's impact. 'Lindsay is a rockstar and a blessing to Vermilion County,' said Michael Ladd, DHS Industrial Technology Educator. 'She played a huge role in my career transition from the business setting to the world of teaching,' Blake Wadsworth, DHS Business and Computer Educator said. Three arrested for illegal firearms in Danville

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Danville Police Department arrested three individuals related to three separate illegal firearms incidents late last week. On Wednesday around 9 p.m., officers were patrolling near Cherry Street in Danville when they noticed a subject 'walking illegally in the roadway.' The police ordered the person to stop, but he attempted to run away and was placed in custody. Danville High School hosting JROTC state archery tournament During the arrest, a loaded firearm was found on the subject. Officers identified the subject as 18-year-old Kamarion Jones of Danville. Jones was transported to the Vermilion County Public Safety Building. He was booked on charges of aggravated possession of a firearm and being under the age of 21, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and obstructing and resisting a peace officer. The next day, officers responded to the intersection of Buchanan Street and Perrysville Avenue around 10:15 p.m. after reports of a truck crashing into a garage. Police were also told the driver fled the scene. When police arrived they learned that the male driver ran into the woods west of the crash site. Officers were given a description of the suspect by the witnesses. After searching the woods, the police officers found the driver and placed him into custody. He was later identified as 20-year-old Michael Sanquenetti of Clinton, Indiana. 'Some of our students have barriers': Danville schools help students in need After investigating, police also found a gun in the suspect's truck. Police added that Sanquenetti is not allowed to have a firearm in Illinois. Sanquenetti was transported to the Vermilion County Public Safety Building and booked for aggravated unlawful possession of a handgun and being under the age of 21, driving under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene of an accident with vehicle damage. On Friday evening, police stopped a vehicle for a registration violation near the intersection of English and Walnut Streets. The driver was identified as 22-year-old Shatiya Brigham of Danville. Officers saw open alcohol and cannabis inside the vehicle, which allowed the officers to investigate further. The police then found a loaded and stolen firearm on Brigham. Danville Fire Department pushing for smoke detector safety after another deadly fire Brigham was arrested and brought to Vermilion County Public Safety Building. She was booked on aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, and driving with improper registration.
