Owner Darcie Maher said the unexpected situation forced her to recruit a steward to ensure the safety of children passing from a nearby school. Punters have also been told off for munching pastries on the neighbours' properties. A post on the bakery's Instagram page said: "We'd like to kindly remind all our lovely customers not to use any local private property to enjoy their pastries. Advertisement "Our wonderful neighbourhood is struggling with the influx of people looking for somewhere to sit around the bakery. "We'd like to politely ask that you don't sit on people's doorsteps or benches. "We understand that we have no control over the actions of people before or after they leave the premises." Only eight people are allowed inside the Hamilton Place bakery at one time so the remainder stand outside on the street. Advertisement But the bakery has also marked out a line on the pavement to advise punters where they can stand. Ms Maher told the BBC: "The safety of the children and parents at Stockbridge Primary School is a priority for us at Lannan. Lannan Bakery in Stockbridge has become popular over the years with locals arriving at the store before 7am to be the first inside. However due to the narrow pavements - the queues can become a struggle for residents nearby. Bakery owner Darcie Maher told the BBC she had recruited a steward to ensure the safety of children from the nearby Stockbridge Primary School is a top priority. In May, we reported the bakery once again had huge queues outside. Eager foodies arrived 40 minutes before the venue opened. Every weekend since opening in 2023, huge queues have been spotted on the street with the owner having to implement measures with a limit of two of each pastries per person introduced in June last year. One woman shared her experience on TikTok after she endured the long queues. She said: "Everything was just so fresh and so good but I did enjoy the cardamom bun the best." The bakery has become a phenomenon on social media and has been branded the 'world's best bakery' with influencers hopping on the trend to see what the fuss is about. Wendy Fu, a student from Beijing in China, waited in the queue for half an-hour to buy five 23-year-old said: "I have never seen a warden at a bakery here in the UK but I have seen it in China, at places that have great marketing strategies for people to come."We have come a long way from campus to be here and I think a lot of other people do the same."I think its good that they have a tactic to keep people in line otherwise it would get really messy and block the road." Sophia Pearson, from Edinburgh, decided to join the queue after seeing lots of people with cake boxes walking past her shop further down the 38-year-old said: "I was surprised they had a member of staff keeping it from being overcrowded but I've never seen it at a bakery before."They do have a crowd to manage so I get it."The warden was polite, so I think they are doing a good job." Yushan Han, an Edinburgh University student from Hebei in China, said she visited the bakery after seeing it on social 23-year-old added: "I've come here three or four times and there is always a queue here."The pavement is too narrow so it is hard for people to pass but I think they have no choice because it is not easy for three people to walk along there in a line."The last time I came here, one month ago, they didn't have a person to keep us in line but now they do."I think what they have done now is a good idea so others can go past." Lannan Bakery, in Edinburgh's Stockbridge district, has come under fire from parents at the nearby primary school, who claim the number of people waiting on the pavement are causing a hazard for families walking to the school, which is just metres from the bakery. Lannan has a strong social media presence, which has attracted large numbers of people to the shop - and features on many tourists' Edinburgh hit lists. Ms Maher has insisted she has tried to control the behaviour of crowds in the past , with strict rules such as limiting the number of pastries people can buy and insisting that no pictures are taken of staff at work. Queues for the bakery often start to form hours before it opens, with the shop regularly sold out by lunchtime. The queue at Lannan Bakery | Neil Johnstone Petulia Melideo, whose children attend Stockbridge Primary School, said the bakery's location on the corner of Saxe Coburg Terrace and Hamilton Place where two roads meet, and the narrow pavement meant the situation could be 'treacherous' for pupils trying to reach the school gates. It's very popular, which is good for them. But the problem is that all the people line up on the same pavement that the kids walk on to get to school - and that's already quite a treacherous pavement. 'We've had incidents happen in the past because it's quite narrow. There are cars parked on the double yellow lines and there is a turning point just at that corner. So it's already a bit of a tricky one. 'Parents with children are having to go on the road and there have been cases where people standing in line have dogs who have been quite aggressive towards other dogs and people with buggies.' Ms Maher told The Scotsman she had engaged a 'queue bouncer' to manage the situation. The school's parent council is understood to have approached Ms Maher and the council about the 'problematic safety aspect' of the queue. She said: 'Darcie recognised that it was problematic and said she was going to hire a person to mind the queue - like a bouncer. But that never materialised." The bakery's appeal is so great some are waiting up to two hours to get a pastry. Ms Maher has put black tape down on the pavement to encourage people to queue close to the building. However, Ms Melideo said customers did not follow the rules. These instances include reports of someone setting up a tripod on a doorstep to video their baked goods. As Edinburgh gears up for a summer of festival shows and thousands of visitors, Ms Melideo said the situation would only get worse as more people descend on the city. Ms Maher said: 'The safety of the children and parents at Stockbridge Primary School is a priority for us at Lannan. We continue to work closely with the school and have engaged a queue warden to manage the queue at Lannan - a new full-time member of staff has been brought on board for this purpose.' The bakery recently expanded its site on Hamilton Place, using a space that had previously been rented out to another business. The team has also announced plans to bring in a pre-order system to help ease the number of people queuing.

Edinburgh's finest bakeries have been crowned among the best in Britain, according to the Good Food Guide. The guide listed three spots in the capital, all of which have opened up in the last three years. Among them were Hobz in Leith, as well as Lannan and Twelve Triangles in Stockbridge. Other Scottish spots made the list including Beefcake Cafe in Glasgow. Aran Bakery in Dunkeld was also branded a foodies 'dream pit stop'. This Leith Walk spot was praised for their 'excellent loaves, sticky cinnamon buns and Christmas panettone'. It opened up back in 2022, and has been a popular spot in the city since. The Good Food Guide added: "Though Hobz was born out of founder Matthew Mallia's passion for creating exceptional wholegrain bread, there's a lot more to love than their excellent loaves. "Their core range of pastries features deliciously sticky cinnamon buns, made with their own croissant dough and glazed with a lemon and blossom-honey syrup, while savoury bakes may include the likes of a decadent Cheddar, honey roast ham, sauerkraut and roasted onion mayo pastry." Sat on Hamilton Place in Stockbridge, they were praised for their vanilla slices, cinammon scrolls and pain au chocolat. The Good Food Guide added: "From lines out the door at The Palmerston to crowds overwhelming her Stockbridge bakery, Darcie Maher can't help but attract queues for her pastrywork. Do the goods deliver? Absolutely. "To get the best selection, it's wise to turn up before 9.30am – or earlier if you can."
