New Romance Novels Brimming With Unhinged Wish Fulfillment

The Witch of Wall Street In a subgenre known for its small towns, THE WITCH OF WALL STREET (Self-published, ebook, $5.99) shoots above the crowd like a skyscraper. Miriam Blum, an investment banker, and Nelson Copperfield, a nonprofit C.E.O., are witches and opposing bidders in a major Manhattan real estate deal. They're also high school rivals, since Nelson often had to rescue Miriam from the snarls caused by her chaos magic. She's learned to control her power, she's fought her way up in the financial world and she's not about to let some smug do-gooder get one over on her now. But he's grown hotter since high school, so she might take him home with her, just once. This ill-advised hookup turns disastrous when Miriam's chaos magic scatters their enchanted possessions across the city, forcing them on a quest through the supernatural nooks and crannies of New York. It's refreshing to see magic as just one more subcultural layer woven through the texture of the city (and I would perish at the magical dim sum place with no regrets). Also refreshing: Miriam is a bit villainous and knows it, which I always appreciate in a heroine. Etkind's book is not so much about choosing pure good versus pure evil, but rather about how to create opportunities for doing good in a world full of shades of gray. Along Came Amor The need to upend the status quo is also a theme in ALONG CAME AMOR (Avon, 512 pp., paperback, $18.99), the third and final volume in Daria's gloriously angst-saturated Primas of Power series. You'll be fine starting with this volume, but the trilogy as a whole is well worth the time; these three books have more concentrated pining than an Austen movie marathon on a rainy afternoon. Ava Rodriguez is fresh off a painful divorce a lot of her family members blame her for. So when a chance encounter leads to one night with a sexy hotel C.E.O. — and then another, and another — she doesn't see the need to tell any of her friends or relatives about it. All she wants is one thing in her life she can enjoy without anyone peevishly asking how long until she screws this up, too. Roman Vázquez worked his way up from a distillery floor to the owner of a luxury hotel chain. But now his baby sister is heading off to college, his mother has decided she wants an apartment of her own and Roman misses feeling needed. Meeting Ava gives him someone to focus all that emotional energy on — and although he's trying to take it slow, every night they share leaves him wanting more. It's all a delicious secret — until they're introduced as best man and maid of honor in Ava's cousin's wedding to Roman's childhood best friend. Now every flicker of flirtation risks calling down the mockery of Ava's critical, gossipy, exasperating relatives. Surrounded by sharp-tongued aunts, gimlet-eyed siblings and deliriously happy couples, Ava and Roman are just about ready to crack beneath the pressure. Ava is one of the best lonely heroines I've read in months, and the book's bachelorette party scene is pure unhinged wish fulfillment. Renegade Girls Finally, there's nothing that starts summer off right like reading comics outdoors in the sun. And for that, we have RENEGADE GIRLS (Little, Brown Ink, 304 pp., paperback, $18.99), the story of a stunt-girl reporter and the photographer she falls for in Gilded Age New York. Nell's mother hopes she'll make a grand society marriage, but Nell would rather be a self-sufficient reporter — and she'd like to write serious pieces, not just the society fluff her editor assigns her. The only person who seems to understand is Alice, a photographer whose excellent social pedigree hides a home that's much more queer-accepting than Nell's. When Nell learns from a servant friend about dangerous conditions in a nearby garment factory, she goes undercover as a laborer — and is soon reporting on dangerous working conditions around the city, with Alice's photographs providing visual proof. But the factory owners are on the hunt for the anonymous reporter, and some of them are closer to Nell than she realizes. We love to see a feminist historical romance aware of the ways that wealthy white ladies can oppress other women — factory workers, immigrants, women of color and queer women. Direct but not too heavy, bright with color and gentle in tone, Neus's graphic novel is an absolute dream of an afternoon read.

This is the one body part you don't want to forget to wash: ‘Always traps grime'

You might be rinsing and repeating — but you're probably not as clean as you think. Dermatologists say there's one spot most people overlook in their shower routine where dirt, oil and dead skin cells can accumulate quickly. Left unchecked, that buildup can lead to bacterial infections, painful skin problems and a foul odor that lingers long after you've toweled off. 4 Studies show roughly two-thirds of Americans shower daily. Daria – Doctors generally agree that your ears do a good job of cleaning themselves, so you can probably toss the Q-tips. But the area around them is a different story. 'I always recommend people wash the skin behind their ears intentionally and specifically to get into the creases of where the ear meets your skin, as it can always trap grime,' Dr. Roger Kapoor, a dermatologist and senior vice president at Beloit Memorial Hospital, told Parade. That's especially true in summer, when sweat and sunscreen create a moist breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. For people who wear glasses, the arms resting behind the ears can also easily transfer bacteria to the skin. Ear-itation Oil, dirt, and dead skin cells piling up behind your ears can clog pores and cause painful pimples and acne. It can also irritate your skin — and even trigger ear eczema. 4 Ear eczema symptoms range from hardly noticeable to extremely uncomfortable. artem_goncharov – This inflammatory skin condition causes red, itchy patches that can be dry, flaky or waxy, depending on the type. 'Any inflammatory condition of the skin can lead to cracks in the natural skin barrier, allowing bacteria in and causing infections,' Dr. Stacey Tull, a dermatologist and micrographic dermatologic surgeon, told Real Simple. Even tiny cuts, piercings or scratches inside the ear can open the door to infection. In rare but serious cases, those infections can spread beyond the ear and into the bloodstream — potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis, when the body starts attacking its own organs. What's that smell? Infections behind the ears can also give off a foul, cheeselike stench, often thanks to bacteria, yeast and fungi, according to Healthline. 4 Possible causes of a smell behind the ear include poor hygiene and infections. – Sweat gland behind the ears also secrete perspiration starts to stink once it mixes with bacteria and oxygen. Add sebaceous glands, which secrete a waxy mix of oils and fats, and you've got a recipe for some serious funk if it builds up. The problem can be even worse for people with overactive glands that release extra sweat and oil. Wash up — and when to get help If an infection is painful, you have a fever, swollen lymph nodes or home treatments like over-the-counter antifungal creams don't work, it's probably time to see a doctor, Medical News Today reports. Some infections need stronger antibiotics to clear up and prevent serious complications. Doctors can also prescribe anti-inflammatory ointments to soothe eczema symptoms. 4 Doctors can help diagnose pain behind the ear and recommend various treatments. bnenin – Otherwise, the area behind your ears is simple to clean. All you need is gentle soap and warm water. The trickiest part is probably remembering to scrub the area after hitting all the usual spots in the shower. Kapoor says shampoo can help break down oil and bacteria behind your ears, but it rinses off quickly unless you specifically scrub the area. If you wear glasses, he also recommends cleaning the arms regularly to keep bacteria from transferring to your skin.

Ex WWE star wraps first film role after shock exit and Invicta move

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Former WWE superstar Sonya Deville has revealed she's finished work on her first movie role. The 31-year-old ex-Raw and SmackDown star, who will make her commentary debut tonight at women's mixed martial arts event Invicta FC 62 under her real name Daria Berenato, is exploring all her options after her WWE contract wasn't renewed earlier this year. She exclusively told Metro: 'I always say to my wife [Toni], she hates the saying, but I'm always like, 'the world is our oyster', because that's truly how I feel and how I've always felt. 'I feel like manifestation is key, and anything you put your mind to, anything you can think of, you can do. 'So yeah, acting is something that I'm actively pursuing, and I've just wrapped a movie a couple weeks ago, so that'll be coming out soon. So that's fun. [I'm] taking it day by day.' When it comes to giving any more details, Daria insisted she's 'not allowed to yet', but that there'll be more information 'when the time is right'. However, the former WWE Women's Tag Team Champion did offer a hint of the kind of roles she could take on given her own tastes. 'I love thrillers. I love action thrillers, psychological thrillers. I'm a really big fan of series,' she smiled. 'I like Breacher, I like Tracker, shows like that that I can kind of follow along and get into the action with them.' She feels like the work she did over a decade with WWE has shown her 'versatility and diversity', from her sports-based presentation and later a stint as General Manager to the work she did as part of Mandy Rose, Otis and Dolph Ziggler's love triangle. 'I'm kind of excited to put some of those skills to use now, hopefully this Friday night,' she added with a nod to her Invicta commentary debut tonight. Daria is 'surprised' by the way her life changed, admitting she didn't expect WWE not to renew her contract before it expired in February – but her reaction might surprise people. 'It was almost like an immediate sigh of relief. Because when you're there, you're in that world, it's so competitive, and you're always having the looming [thought], 'When is the day going to come?' Not if, because everyone at some point gets let go or leaves,' she pointed out. 'I had been there for a decade. My entire 20s were spent there from 21 to 31 so I really felt like I got to show what I can do, and I got to experience so many things, and I just left with gratitude. I was like, 'That was amazing. Chapter one's over. Now it's time for chapter two.' ' For that second chapter, Daria is going back to her MMA roots after talks with Shannon Knapp had her sold on being part of a promotion she first watched at shows over a decade ago. 'As I was fighting MMA, and kind of trying to blaze my own path in the sport, I always dreamed of fighting at Invictus,' she beamed. 'It's a very full circle moment.' Daria was 'really devastated' when she left the MMA world behind for reality show WWE Tough Enough in 2015, which led to her contract with the sports entertainment giant. After feeling like she was in a 'time warp for 10 years' laser-focused on that career, Daria is delighted to be heading back. '[MMA] was kind of my identity at the time,' she reflected. 'That's why I feel like this moment, joining Invicta on the commentary team, is so special, and it's somewhere so deep in my heart.' That's not to say she's closed the door on pro wrestling, and she's well aware that people will make connections between Invicta and WWE partner TNA, given they both fall under the Anthem banner. 'There's definitely something about [TNA] that intrigues me. I'm not blind to the fact that the same company owns Invicta and TNA,' she quipped. 'I will just say, I think the best is yet to come. So we will see. I don't have answers right now to give you, but I think that there's conversations to be had.' More Trending Whether it's MMA or pro wrestling – or even the Unwrapped podcast with her wife Toni – Daria is leaving all doors open and staying open minded. 'I feel like the best is yet to come for me. I feel like in every aspect, I'm better than I've ever been. My body feels great, I feel more athletic than I was in my 20s,' she said. 'Maybe I'm a late bloomer, I don't know, but I just feel better than I've ever felt. And I feel like the options are endless, but I'm really enjoying what I'm doing right now.' Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces launching women's unit

The Unmanned Systems Forces have begun recruiting members for its new women's unit called the Harpies, the branch announced on April 2. The Harpies also include male personnel, but the "role of pilots who deliver the final blows will be performed exclusively by women," the unit said on Telegram. Ukraine has pioneered drone technology during its full-scale war with Russia, introducing various ground-, air-, and sea-based models for combat and reconnaissance. The Unmanned Systems Forces were formally established as a separate branch last June to oversee Ukraine's drone fleet. The Harpies will be commanded by a veteran soldier named Daria, also known by the codename "DSHK", who was an active participant in the EuroMaidan Revolution and has fought in the special forces since 2022. The branch is offering 75 days of training and a wide selection of vehicles, including first-person-view (FPV) copters, heavy bombers, fixed-wing drones, and ground systems. "The Harpies are a community of women who seek to take revenge on... (Russia) and protect their children, families, and the state using unmanned systems," the branch said in its announcement. There are 68,000 women in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including 48,000 military service members and 5,000 fighters deployed in the combat zone, the Defense Ministry said last fall.
