Keep out of the heat if you can. If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter. Cool yourself down. Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes. Keep your living space cool. Ninja FrostVault review
When I think of Ninja, my mind immediately jumps to their infamous air fryers. But it turns out they make some of the best coolers, too. The Ninja FrostVault Cooler has blown me away, keeping my drinks freezing cold for eight whole days and still having ice in the box after five. The FrostVault also cools incredibly quickly, and is easy to maintain after any camping trip or day out. This coolbox is on the expensive side, but the performance speaks for itself. You will need to get someone to give you a hand when the box is full, as it gets pretty heavy, but it's a good way to get a quick workout in. You can find out more about my experience in this full Ninja FrostVault Cooler review. Price $299/£279 Weight 30.2lbs Dimensions 28.58 x 17.36 x 18.89 inches Capacity 45QT Can capacity 68 (40 cans with 20lbs of ice) Colors Slate Grey, Olive, Cloud White Material Plastic The Ninja FrostVault Cooler is available for purchase from Amazon U.S. for $299 with six colors to choose from: Beige, White, Blue, Dark Grey, Light Grey, and Merlot. From Amazon U.K., the cooler is priced at £279 with color choices of Grey, Olive, and White. The FrostVault is available in three different capacities. I tested the 45QT model but there is a smaller 30QT box and a larger 65QT cooler. The cooler also comes with a 5 year guarantee from Ninja. There are cheaper options, like the Coleman Steel-Belted Cooler which is 54QT and $100 cheaper at $199, but the Ninja is the most impressive coolbox I've come across, so it's worth the spend. The Ninja FrostVault Cooler is pretty big, making it adequately spacious. The insulated walls of the box are 3 inches thick, so the box does look bulky, butit works incredibly well. I was able to fit four bags of ice and 10 Coca-Cola cans and still had loads of room left in the top section of the box. I found the box to be pretty heavy when it had the ice and canned drinks inside, but that's not to say it was hard to maneuver. I needed a hand to carry the box down a few steps, but everywhere else I was able to use the handle and wheels to move the cooler on my own. The box has two 'all-terrain' wheels. They protrude slightly and are pretty garish, but their functionality makes up for their looks, and make the box stable when moving, although the sort of off-roading Ninja does with this box in the advertising seems a little far fetched — it is still a heavy box with wheels. Ninja says the wheels are 'puncture proof' — they're made of hard plastic so there's nothing to puncture. The handles to wheel the box have grips on them, which I found useful since, like I said, the box gets pretty heavy. The arm of the handle also folds neatly into the side of the cooler box, so it saves space when transporting in the car, or for storage. At the bottom of the main box is the dry storage drawer. This still gets super cold but isn't in direct contact with any of the ice, so is great for storing anything that can't get wet. There is a latch on the front of the box that secures the lid down. There is also a locking mechanism that keeps the dry drawer closed when moving the box. There is a drain at the bottom of the box to easily empty the water once everything has melted. The Ninja FrostVault's cooling performance is nothing short of astounding. To test out the box, I filled it with cans of Coca-Cola and added four bags of ice. The ice took up a lot of space but there was still plenty of room for cans. I checked after 3 hours and the insulated walls of the cooler were freezing cold. Also, the dry tray at the bottom of the cooler was just as cold as the main box, so the insulation works well to transfer the cold between the two sections. Having the two sections in the box was very useful as I was able to keep drinks at the top and food in the bottom drawer. Ninja advertises the two sections as a way to reduce cross-contamination, which is extremely useful if you're storing raw meat alongside other foods/drinks for a barbecue. The drinks in the box were still icy cold and at perfect drinking temperature after 8 days of testing. I checked the ice in the box periodically before this, and on day 5 there were still chunks of ice in the cooler. These had melted by day 6, but ice still being present after 5 days is impressive. Obviously if you are opening the box more often and are in a hotter climate the cooler won't perform as well, but you can be assured that if you are going camping for two or three days, your food and drink is in good hands. Although Ninja makes no specific claims on how long the cooler stays cold for, it definitely blows other coolers Tom's Guide has tested out of the water. The Coleman Classic Cooler claims to stay cool for up to 5 days, but while it was still chilled at day 2, by day 4, everything was melted the cold drinks were just a few degrees below room temperature. The Ninja is far more reliable. Keeping the Ninja FrostVault Cooler in the best condition is super simple. After use, I drained the water out of the cooler by unscrewing the cap on the side. Once it is emptied, the inside can be washed with a cloth and warm, soapy water. It then needs to be rinsed and left to air dry completely before closing it. The dry drawer also comes out of the cooler box to be cleaned independently. I would describe the cooler as rugged. It wouldn't look out of place in the woodland somewhere and the hard plastic means that if it was thrown around in the back of your truck, it would hold up just fine. The wheels won't require anything more than a wipe down easier as they are hard plastic so won't puncture. If you need a reliable, freezing cold cooler, then look no further. Its 45QT capacity means it can fit enough food and drink to keep you going for a whole weekend. The dry drawer is also ideal for keeping items separate and ensuring food hygiene. It is easy to clean and maintain, and while it can be difficult to move up and down steps when full, its wheels make it easy to cart around flatter ground. Sure, the price tag is high, but the performance really does speak for itself. Keeping ice solid for 5 days is no mean feat, and canned drinks staying chilly for 8 whole days will make festival season even better.

I swapped my trail runners for Columbia's Escape Thrive boots in a rainy week of hiking — and I'm not going back
The Columbia Escape Thrive Titanium OutDry Mid Shoe is a well-cushioned, waterproof hiking boot that blends modern design with reliable performance. It features Columbia's signature technical materials to keep your feet protected across varied terrain, and it pairs just as well with traditional hiking gear as it does with more casual walking outfits like jeans. Last summer, I tested the Columbia Konos TRS OutDry Mid Shoe and was impressed with its performance, but I wasn't as keen on the high-top trainer look. With the Escape Thrive Titanium, Columbia has answered my prayers by combining excellent performance on the trails with a more classic boot style. Over the past month, I've put the Escape Thrives through their paces, from easier hikes across the London commons to a week-long trip on the rugged Isle of Arran. Tackling wind, rain, rivers, mud and puddles, my feet stayed dry and comfortable throughout. This boot sits in the mid-range price-wise. It's not the cheapest option, but based on my experience, it delivers excellent value for the performance. Read on for my full take and decide if they're the right fit for your next adventure. Price $160 / £135 Weight (per shoe) 12.4 oz / 351 g Size availability Women's: U.S. 5-12 U.K. 3-10 Men's: U.S.7-15 U.K. 6-14 Colors Women's: Teal/Black Grey Ice/Dark Grey Men's: Zinc/Black Moonstone/Graphite Materials Polyester, EVA, TPE, rubber Waterproofing Columbia OutDry waterproof membrane bonded to upper Breathable, seam-sealed construction Columbia Escape Thrive Titanium OutDry Mid Shoes are available in men's and women's versions and sizes for $160 from Columbia and other large US-based retailers like Dick's Sporting Goods. Women can choose from Teal/Black (blue and black) or Grey Ice/Dark Grey (grey and black) colorways, the latter is the style I tested and features in the photos. Sizes 5 to 12 are available in the women's shoe. Meanwhile, the men's version of the boot comes in Zinc/Black (blue and black) or Moonstone/Graphite (grey and black), with sizes 7 to 15 on offer. Columbia has used the same base colorways across both versions, though the shades differ slightly between the men's and women's boots. The Columbia Escape Thrive Titanium OutDry Mid Shoe weighs 10.3 oz / 292 g in a woman's size seven and 12.4 oz / 351 g in men's size 9. That's considered lightweight for a mid-height hiking boot, especially one with built-in waterproofing. Many traditional hiking boots weigh 14 oz + per shoe. The Escape Thrive is clearly a hiking boot, but unlike other waterproof options in the Tom's Guide guide to the best hiking boots, which tend to have a traditional, utilitarian look, Columbia's take is trendier. The sole of the shoe is noticeably bulky, but that's where the all-day comfort comes from. The underfoot cushioning uses Columbia's Omni-MAX materials to deliver energy return and flexible support. It's also designed to enhance stability and provide great traction while out adventuring. Size-wise, I went with my usual shoe size and had no issues. I could comfortably wear thicker hiking socks without my toes feeling cramped, and didn't experience any rubbing. My first walk in them felt great, with no feeling that I'd need a few walks to break them in. Depending on where you live, waterproof shoes might not be essential for every hike. But in Scotland, I've never been on a hiking trip where I didn't have to think about wet socks. Whether it's relentless rain, ankle-deep bogs, or trails that double as streams, dry feet are a luxury you can't really go without. I put the Escape Thrive's waterproofing to the test in exactly those kinds of conditions. Columbia uses what they call OutDry, a waterproof and breathable membrane that's bonded to the outer fabric. Unlike some boots where water can sneak into the space between layers, this setup is designed to stop it at the surface. After a few hours splashing through shallow streams and bog-ridden routes, my feet stayed dry and the boots didn't feel waterlogged or heavy. The Escape Thrive's upper uses Columbia's Navic Fit System, which basically means the laces are integrated into a webbing setup that helps keep your heel locked in place. It's a small detail, but it makes a difference. I didn't notice any heel lift, even on steeper inclines or when picking up the pace on uneven terrain. It adds a sense of stability and reduces the kind of foot movement inside the boot that can lead to rubbing or blisters over time. There are also handy heel and tongue pull loops on the boot to ensure you can hoist your boots on with ease. As mentioned above, the cushioning in the Escape Thrive stands out. The midsole uses Columbia's Omni-MAX system, which offers a nice balance of cushioning and energy return, enough that I felt supported without feeling weighed down. The insole adds to that comfort straight out of the box, with a bit of contouring that helps with underfoot support on longer hikes. What I appreciated most was that the shoe didn't feel overly rigid. It gave me freedom to adjust my footing depending on the terrain, without that locked-in feeling some sturdier boots have. I'm no stranger to the occasional slip or stumble on a hill walk, especially going downhill when my knees are tired and my lanky legs aren't doing me any favours. But so far, I haven't had a single slip in the Escape Thrive. The Adapt Trax outsole holds up, even on wet rock and muddy paths. The tread pattern is clearly designed for hiking and gives a solid grip without feeling bulky or stiff. It gave me confidence on dry trails and the more slippery sections where I'd usually be more cautious with my footing. I found the Escape Thrive incredibly comfortable from the moment I laced them up. They didn't just feel good on my feet, they looked great too. The grey colourway matched well with the rest of my hiking gear, which is a nice bonus if you care about how your kit looks on the trail. I tested the boots during spring, and they handled the mixed conditions really well. I felt stable and confident whether I was moving over rocky ground, wet paths, or heading downhill. I also thoroughly enjoyed putting the waterproofing to the test. I walked straight through puddles and streams without hesitation, and not a single drop made it into the boots. Thanks to the breathable design, my feet stayed dry from sweat, too, and there were no unpleasant odours to deal with after a long day of hiking. Just be aware that, as these are mid-height boots, any water that comes above ankle level can still seep in from the top. Aside from that, they offered excellent protection. The traction from the Adapt Trax outsole was especially impressive and gave me solid grip in wet and dry conditions. This is very much a three-season boot. The breathability is great for warmer days and changeable spring weather, but the lack of insulation means it might not be warm enough for cold-weather hikes or winter mountain trails. The Escape Thrive Titanium OutDry Mid Shoe is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable, waterproof hiking shoe that's comfortable straight out of the box. If you've got a hiking trip coming up, whether it's a weekend in the hills or a longer walking holiday, this is the kind of quality you want underfoot. It's lightweight, offers a solid grip, and keeps your feet dry in wet conditions. I'd also recommend it to anyone who prefers a modern-looking boot that pairs well with the rest of their outdoor gear. At $160, this isn't the most budget-friendly option. If you only head out on the trails once or twice a year, it might feel like a lot to spend on a pair of boots. In that case, something more affordable could make more sense. It might also not be the right fit for people who prefer a higher cut for extra ankle support or those tackling technical, rugged terrain where heavier-duty boots are more appropriate.
