Dallas Mavericks assistant coach arrested in assault investigation
The assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks was arrested by Dallas police Sunday morning. Darrell Armstrong, 56, was arrested as a suspect on an aggravated assault charge. He is not in jail, according to DPD. Dallas Police responded to a call in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue at about 3:45 a.m. Preliminary investigation determined that Armstrong and the victim were in an argument when he hit the victim with a gun and threatened to shoot, according to the police report. Police said Armstrong and the victim knew each other. It wasn't clear whether Armstrong has an attorney who could comment on his behalf. Dallas Fire Rescue responded and treated the victim at the scene, according to the police department. The Dallas Mavericks said they are aware of an incident involving a member of its staff and placed that person on administrative suspension pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. There is an ongoing investigation into the incident, Dallas police said. Armstrong spent two seasons with the Mavericks late in his 14-year playing career and was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 team that reached the NBA Finals, losing to Miami. DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks said Sunday they have suspended an employee they didn't identify after assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Dallas police said officers responded to a call in the predawn hours Saturday. Police said a preliminary investigation determined the 56-year-old Armstrong and the victim were arguing when Armstrong hit the victim with a gun and threatened to shoot the victim. Armstrong and the victim knew each other, according to police. Dallas television station WFAA cited multiple anonymous law enforcement sources in identifying the victim as a woman. It wasn't clear whether Armstrong has an attorney who could comment on his behalf. WFAA reported that Armstrong has posted bond since being booked Saturday morning. The Mavericks said they were aware of the incident and gathering information. An NBA spokesperson said the league was in contact with the Mavericks and also in the process of gathering information. 'The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings,' the team said. 'This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.' ORLANDO, Fla. - Former Orlando Magic Guard and current Dallas Mavericks assistant coach, Darrell Armstrong, was arrested in Dallas, according to reporting done by FOX 4 and the Dallas Police Department. What we know On Saturday around 3:45 a.m., police responded to the call. The investigation revealed that 56-year-old Armstrong hit his girlfriend with a gun and threatened to shoot her while the two were arguing. An arrest warrant affidavit for Armstrong says the incident began when his girlfriend began to question him about a text from another woman, according to FOX 4. Armstrong's girlfriend told police that Armstrong had been drinking and demanded that she give him her set of keys to their apartment. She then claimed that while Armstrong was on the phone with another person, he picked up a pistol and hit her on the right side of her face. Armstrong then loaded the pistol and said "I'm going to shoot you," according to the affidavit. Mavericks assistant Darrell Armstrong reportedly arrested; charged with aggravated assault The Dallas Mavericks have suspended an employee as assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was reportedly arrested and charged of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Armstrong was booked into jail before 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set to $35,000, which he has since posted. USA TODAY Sports had reached out to Dallas police for more information. The Mavericks said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports it is aware of an incident "involving a member of our staff," but did not specify who it was. The team said it was gathering information regarding the incident and they were suspended. "The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings," the team said. "This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing." This is the 10th full season Armstrong has been part of the Dallas coaching staff after he joined midway through the 2008-09 season. He has spent eight seasons as the team's top assistant during the Summer League, and was part of the staff that won the 2011 NBA Finals. Armstrong played 14 seasons in the NBA, and he won the league's Sixth Man Award and Most Improved Player Award in 1999 with the Orlando Magic. He played with five teams, including two campaigns with Dallas from 2004-06. He was part of the 2005-06 team that played in the NBA Finals, losing to the Miami Heat in six games.
