Offices have 'no legal requirement' to keep you cool as temperatures reach 33C

The UK has been plunged into a heatwave with temperatures racing past 30C in most parts of the country. Sadly, this has happened on a Friday, meaning millions of Brits are stuck in the office, looking through the window, and counting down to 5pm. In the meantime, for anyone lamenting the fact there's no air con in the office, employers are under no legal obligation to keep office temperatures below a certain level. Read more: Millions of UK households told to spend £49 before end of Friday In fact, the law only requires workplaces to maintain a 'reasonable' temperature – a vague standard set out in the Workplace Regulations 1992. While 16°C is widely considered the lower limit for a comfortable office, there's no official upper limit – meaning bosses aren't breaking the law if staff are left melting at their desks. Psychologist Darren Stanton, who said: 'People's reactions to the weather are often driven by light levels, which directly impact our mood. "Sunlight boosts the production of serotonin – the feel-good hormone – but excessive heat can have the opposite effect, leading to irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and brain fog.' 'In hot weather, it's common for motivation and energy levels to drop. To stay mentally balanced, it's important to stay hydrated, use fans or cooling devices, and take regular breaks, ideally stepping outside for fresh air or shade. "Maintaining a routine and staying socially connected can also help ease extreme heat's emotional and physical strain.' Richard Smith, founder and CEO of Office Freedom, added: 'When the mercury rises, employers need to think beyond the legal bare minimum. No one should be expected to sit through a heatwave in an office that feels like a sauna.' 'Simple things like ensuring good ventilation, offering cold drinks, and letting people adjust their hours can make a huge difference. If staff are too hot, they're uncomfortable, unproductive, and at risk of heat-related stress — that's bad for them and bad for business.' It comes as the Met Office has issued a 13-hour thunderstorm warning as the UK heatwave ends with a horror blast of rain. The Met Office says: "Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads. "There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. "Where lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services."

This Surprising Royal Has Been Dubbed the "Most Consistently Confident" Despite Public Perception

This week kicks off a busy season of royal events for everyone from The King to Princess Charlotte, Prince George and Prince Louis. May 8 marks a parade and balcony appearance for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, followed by events like the Chelsea Flower Show, Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot. Ahead of an action-packed May and June, the most confident royal has been revealed by a leading body language expert—and it's not who you might think. Queen Camilla has been named the "most consistently confident" member of the Royal Family after "rising to duty," per former police officer and body language expert Darren Stanton. Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots, Stanton revealed King Charles has shown more confidence since stepping up as monarch, while Queen Camilla has "set an example" for many of the younger royals to follow (and her husband). Despite the tough days of her early royal career following her affair with Prince Charles, Stanton said, "Queen Camilla has been the most consistently confident royal over the years." He added that The Queen has "always carried herself with elegance and independence whatever she is faced with publicly. She's never been fazed by being out in public." Stanton said that now that Camilla "has been welcomed into the Royal Family and obtained more responsibilities, she's set an inspiring example for many," especially now that she's become Queen. "Now that she is the matriarch of the Royal Family, we never see signs of Camilla feeling hesitant or nervous—she's very good at diving in head first and doing what needs to be done," the body language expert added. King Charles has followed in his wife's example, with Stanton stating that "Charles strictly followed royal protocol and found difficulty expressing independence and confidence" before he took the throne. "I don't think Charles was fully confident in his own abilities compared to now," he added. Explaining that The King used to be seen blinking rapidly and "fiddling with his clothes and cufflinks," Stanton shared, "Since he's been with Camilla and has gathered more responsibilities as King, we've seen fewer instances of Charles using these gestures." "He's now able to open up more and be himself when we see him carrying out his duties. We now see a King who is in control," the body language expert said. And while Prince William "would often follow the same techniques" as his dad used to when he felt "nervous," Stanton said the Prince of Wales has shown a new level of confidence. "William now shows an enjoyment in connecting with people and opening up with the public," Stanton said. "He can let go of his nerves and have fun, while still adhering to royal protocol."

King Charles's Body Language Yesterday Was Intense—and it Spoke Volumes

Just over a month ago, I noticed a significant change in King Charles's confidence—and even body language expert Darren Stanton agreed, noting that he looked like "a completely different man" in one of his portraits. Then, His Majesty was all smiles and laughs during his visit to Imperial College London's White City Campus in February. But now, I'm seeing a whole new side of the 76-year-old monarch. In case you missed it, King Charles recently visited the Royal College of Nursing in London to celebrate their 1000th King's Nursing Cadet. While there, he met with a few cadets who walked him through how to perform CPR—and the royal family even shared footage on Instagram, writing, "The young cadets demonstrated some of the new skills they have learnt—and even encouraged His Majesty to have a go himself!" In the video, the king looked like a natural and kept a consistent rhythm as he performed CPR on the mannequin, but I couldn't help but notice his body language. Judging by the footage and videos, he's in good spirits and bursting with energy. The very first clip shows him doing chest compressions like a total pro (albeit with quite a lot of intensity), and with a genuine smile. He also shows no signs of exhaustion and he's fully engaged as the other cadets watch along. In the following footage, the king is quick to smile as he chats with the other cadets. He also leans in and uses open-hand gestures, indicating his high confidence and comfort level. In the comments, one fan wrote, "King Charles is so cute, love the way he talks to the people and how interested he is. He looks so happy. Wonderful." Another chimed in, "I am happy his majesty is in good shape." JAIMI JOY/POOL/AFP via Getty Images The king's high energy is a stark contrast to what I observed last year, after he was diagnosed with cancer in February. At the time, His Majesty postponed several royal engagements and was understandably more composed in the few times he made public appearances—including the Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel in March. Great to see the king is in much better spirits. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Subscribe here.
