He replaces Gary Stead and will coach New Zealand across all three formats. Walter has previously coached Otago and Central Districts and most recently the South African white ball teams. He will have to hit the ground running with a high benchmark set by Stead, with the side rising to number one in the ICC Test and ODI rankings during his stint, as well as winning numerous bi-lateral series and breaking new ground with series wins at home and abroad. Stead can also be credited with rejuvenating the team during his time in charge with the selections of stars such as Daryl Mitchell, Kyle Jamieson, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Will O'Rourke. Walter's contract is through until the 2028 T20 World Cup. More to come...

Martin Guptill returns to Pakistan for PSL days after ex-NZ teammate's reported declaration of ‘never' returning again

Martin Guptill said on Sunday that he is back in Pakistan for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The league had been suspended due to rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, with the match between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi in Rawalpindi on Friday being the first game this season since May 7. Guptill, who retired from international cricket in January this year, is part of the commentary team for the league. Guptill's return comes after reports emerged of his former New Zealand teammate Daryl Mitchell stating that he will 'never return to Pakistan again'. Bangladesh leg spinner Rishad Hossain had told Cricbuzz that the foreign players he knew were all 'frightened' and 'relieved' to have reached Dubai. 'Foreign players like Sam Billings, Daryl Mitchell, Kushal Perera, David Wiese, Tom Curran… all of them were so frightened… Landing in Dubai, Mitchell told me that he would never go to Pakistan again, especially in this kind of scenario. Overall, they were all horrified,' Rishad had said. The PSL's suspension came shortly after the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) was halted. Like the PSL, the IPL returned on Saturday as well, albeit in a washed out match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders. While there were initial plans to play the rest of the PSL season in the UAE, those were eventually scrapped. There are eight matches remaining this season, with the final to be played on May 25, which is a week later than the originally scheduled date. A number of foreign players have returned to Pakistan for the remainder of the tournament. Saturday's match between Kings and Zalmi featured the former's captain and Australia great David Warner, Ben McGermott, James Vince and Mohammad Nabi while Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Max Bryant and Luke Wood turned up for the latter. The four remaining group games will take place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Ground, with the playoffs and final in Lahore. The first of the double header on Sunday between Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators is the only game that will take place in the day, with evening games set to start at 7.30pm local time.

PSL 2025 to resume on the same day as IPL 2025, PCB once again initiates clash

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 will resume on May 17, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on social media on Tuesday. The tournament will now resume on the same day as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The BCCI announced the revised schedule for the 18th edition of the T20 tournament on Monday night. The BCCI have already announced the entire fixture list and venues for the IPL league stage. Only the venues for the playoffs have yet to be revealed. However, the PCB has only announced the resumption date for the PSL and when the tournament will conclude. The PSL will now end a week after it was originally scheduled to. Earlier, the IPL and PSL were suspended owing to the rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. However, a ceasefire led to both BCCI and PCB deciding to resume their respective T20 competitions. "HBL PSL X picks up from where it left off," he wrote in the post. "6 teams, 0 fear. Get ready for 8 thrilling matches starting 17th May, leading up to the Grand Final on 25th May. Best of luck to all the teams," PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). There are eight games remaining in the PSL. However, it is not known whether overseas stars such as Daryl Mitchell and David Warner will return to Pakistan for the remainder of the tournament. The tenth edition of the PSL began on April 12. The tournament was suspended indefinitely before the match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings in Rawalpindi. This is the first time that PCB decided to conduct the PSL in the same window as the IPL. For the uninitiated, the 18th edition of the IPL began on March 22. Originally, the PSL final was supposed to be played on April 18 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The PCB confirmed the suspension of the PSL last week, just a day after announcing that the tournament would go ahead in Dubai, UAE. However, according to reports, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) did not entertain the PCB's request and opted out of hosting the remaining PSL matches. However, PCB's official release did not state anything regarding this and the rising tensions between India and Pakistan at the border was cited as the official reason. The board also confirmed that most of the overseas stars of the league wanted to go back home and PCB kept their mental well-being in mind. 'We, at the PCB, also have a sincere regard for the mental well-being of participating players and the sentiments of our foreign players, and we respect the concerns of their families who want to see them back home,' the PCB said in an official release.

Mitchell debunks Indian media's reports

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell on Saturday issued a heartfelt message to swiftly debunk Indian media's reports, claiming that the batting all-rounder vowed not to visit Pakistan again following the suspension of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 due to unwanted circumstances. Mitchell, who was representing two-time champions Lahore Qalandars in PSL 10, is among several overseas players who returned to their respective countries after the temporary suspension of this year's edition. Upon reaching New Zealand, Mitchell, in a statement released by the Qalandars, termed Pakistan as one of the countries close to his heart and expressed his determination to return. "It's been tough to watch two countries that are so close to my heart in conflict over the past few days. My thoughts are with those affected on both sides," Daryl Mitchell was quoted as saying by Qalandars. "Both the PSL and IPL have played major roles in my career, and I've always cherished my time in both tournaments. I hope peace prevails and we can get back to playing the game we love and continue giving back to the amazing people who support us." "It feels good to be heading home to my family, but I'm also looking forward to returning to both countries in the future - places I truly love spending time in." Earlier today, Indian media, while quoting Mitchell's Qalandars teammate Rishad Hossain, had claimed that the New Zealand international said that 'he would never go to Pakistan again'. For the unversed, the potential resumption of PSL 10 is on cards after the formal announcement of the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, with Rawalpindi emerging as a possible venue to host the remaining eight matches. According to reports, the league's administration has told all six franchises to keep their overseas players in Dubai and instructed the local players to prepare for the upcoming matches.

‘We owe it to Jay Shah: UAE official reveals BCCI's role as ECB backs out of hosting PSL

Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) created an embarrassing situation for Pakistan by refusing to hold 8 PSL matches in the country, despite an official announcement by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Notably, the PCB had announced earlier this week that it would move the last few matches of the PSL to the UAE amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, but the rejection by the Emirates board later made Pakistan postpone its 20-over league. While it was speculated that quiet Indian diplomacy might be at play to get the UAE to change course on its decision to host the PSL, a new report has revealed the role of the BCCI and Jay Shah (former BCCI secretary and current ICC chairman). As per Cricbuzz, Jay Shah's standing in international cricket and his ties with UAE's leadership played a significant role in ECB reversing its decision to hold the PSL. Reportedly, the relations between BCCI and ECB have remained cordial with the Indian board under Shah conducting 1 and half IPL seasons in UAE and also organizing the T20 World Cup 2021 in the country. Moreover, ECB's current secretary general, Mubashir Usmani, is also originally an Indian from Mumbai. An ECB official while revealing the role of BCCI and Jay Shah in the matter said (as quoted by Cricbuzz), 'We owe it to the BCCI and Jay Bhai,' Meanwhile, Bangladesh leg spinner Rishad Hossain recently showed his relief at safely reaching UAE afer the postponement of PSL. He also revealed that many foreign players like Daryl Mitchell and Sam billings were frightened by the situation in Pakistan. "Foreign players like Sam Billings, Daryl Mitchell, Kushal Perera, David Wiese, Tom Curran... all of them were so frightened... Landing in Dubai, Mitchell told me that he would never go to Pakistan again, especially in this kind of scenario. Overall, they all were horrified," Hossain was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying. 'He (Tom Curran) arrived at the airport only to find out that it was shut down. He became so overwhelmed that it took two or three people to calm him down,' the Bangladeshi player added.
