Challinor criticises Stockport fans who left during shootout

Dave Challinor led Stockport County to a third-placed finish in League One before their eventual play-off defeat by Leyton Orient [Rex Features] Stockport County boss Dave Challinor has criticised fans who left midway through the penalty shootout they lost to Leyton Orient in Wednesday's League One play-off semi-final second leg at Edgeley Park. The Hatters were defeated 4-1 on penalties by Orient after the second leg finished 1-1 and 3-3 on aggregate. Advertisement Jack Diamond saw his penalty saved, while Ryan Rydel struck the post in the shootout. Some fans had left before Orient struck the winning spot-kick. "I get that there's disappointment. No-one's more disappointed than how much we are. There are players in the dressing room where it will live with them for the rest of their lives," Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester. "They deserve better than people walking out. Maybe they thought the game was over." Challinor has led Stockport to two promotions during his time with the club, taking them from the National League to the third tier. Advertisement Prior to this season's play-off campaign, they ended the season in third position, missing out on automatic promotion by five points. "If the players walked off with five minutes to go, we wouldn't be in the position we're in. That is a bit of a frustration," he added. "I get people may want to get away and avoid traffic and things, but our season has come to an end and I think it would have been nice and justified for people to have stayed in. "The majority did, don't get me wrong, and I massively thank them for that, to appreciate what the players have done because the effort they've given for nine months has been incredible." Advertisement Stockport had prior experience of losing on penalties in the play-offs, having lost to Carlisle United on spot-kicks at Wembley in the 2023 League Two final. Challinor's side went on to win the fourth tier title the following season, but he does not feel they will have things all their way in 2025-26. "I don't in any way think it will be as easy as that. To go back to the play-off game against Carlisle, we were hampered by injuries. I felt in that season we deserved to be promoted, we were one of the best teams," he said. "Unfortunately we've missed out at this stage. Football is ruthless, it moves on quickly." Advertisement A big summer awaits for the club as they look to make changes to their line-up in order to remain competitive next season. Challinor said: "Obviously there are players out of contract and we need to look at our squad. "There will be players at the club whose opportunities have been limited this year and will move on and it's my job to shape our squad in order to give ourselves the opportunity of being as successful next year as we have been this year. "There certainly won't be an understanding from my perspective, as I imagine there will be from a lot of other people, that says that because we finished third this year that we'll just happily waltz to an automatic spot next year and get promoted. "We've got to be better than this year not to stand still. And that becomes all of our jobs to make sure that happens."

Live Stockport County vs Leyton Orient: Lineups and latest updates from League One play-off

Stockport County have not played in English football's second tier since 2002. Leyton Orient have not done so since 1982. This evening, both clubs have the opportunity to put themselves one Wembley victory from ending that wait. There is little to separate them after a 2-2 draw in east London, though Stockport and their manager Dave Challinor claimed a moral victory after an 'absolute shocker' of a call saw an offside Orient opener stand. Stockport finished the regular season three places above and nine points in front of Orient, but both teams scored 72 goals in 46 games. Orient have the division's top goalscorer in Charlie Kelman, who finished the season with 21 which was two clear of Birmingham City's big-money purchase Jay Stansfield. Orient though, finished the season the stronger which is something manager Richie Wellens is hoping his players can take confidence from. 'We absolutely deserve it [to be in the play-offs],' Wellens told BBC Radio London. 'In the last 30 games of the League One season we've picked up 63 points. Only Charlton have matched us and only Birmingham are above us, so this has not been a one or two-month thing, this has been over a long period of time – 30 games is 70 per cent of the season. 'The players have been absolutely fantastic. The fact we've done it without spending huge amounts of money, and developing young players as well as winning, the club can take huge amounts of satisfaction from that.' Stockport are going to back-to-back promotions after sliding down the leagues to as low as the National League North in 2013. They are unbeaten in 10 home matches at Edgeley Park, which makes them slight favourites to progress from this position. The winners of tonight's tie will play Wycombe Wanderers or Charlton Athletic in the final.

Fans fume over 'absolutely shocking' offside call in EFL play-offs - as manager labels it 'WORST decision' he's ever seen

Fans were left fuming at an 'absolute shocker' of an offside call which overshadowed Stockport County's League One play-off semi-final first leg against Leyton Orient. Stockport manager Dave Challinor also raged at the decision, which he labelled the 'worst' of his career. Orient took the lead at Brisbane Road when Charlie Kelman slotted in his 26th goal of the season, despite standing in a clear offside position. The 23-year-old tapped in a loose header in the 30th minute but there was a massive gap between Stockport's final defender and the forward as the ball was nodded goalwards by Omar Beckles. Kelman, who is the league's top scorer, later buried an 88th minute penalty to rescue a draw for the home side after Stockport scored twice through Oliver Norwood and Fraser Horsfall in five minutes in the second half. The decision not to rule out the opener had put Orient in pole position as they target a return to the second tier for the first time since 1982. Leyton Orient have broken the deadlock thanks to Charlie Kelman's 26th goal this season ⚽️🔴 — Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) May 10, 2025 Charlie Kelman was clearly stood in an offside position as Omar Beckles headed the ball on The 23-year-old striker, who is League One's top scorer, netted a late penalty to level the tie Leyton Orient, who finished 6th, hope to reach the second tier for the first time since 1982 Stockport players surrounded referee Benjamin Speedie to no avail, while Challinor could be seen confronting him at half-time. Speaking after the game, Challinor said: 'Massive kudos to my players for reacting in a positive way to what is the worst decision I have seen in 15 years of management, in what is the biggest game in my managerial career. 'That [first goal] is an absolute shocker. They're supposed to be the best of our group to be refereeing these games. If that's the best, as players, staff, managers, we're quite right to be concerned. 'I get why there is a scramble to ultimately get robots involved and stop human error, because that can't happen.' Orient boss Richie Wellens said: 'The first goal I have heard is offside. It's difficult for me to say from where I am, but people have told me it is offside - and if he is offside, just give it offside. We would rather get a genuine goal. 'I've said it all season that the referees have a huge impact on games at this level.' Fans took to social media to express their anger at 'one of the worst offside calls ever'. One wrote: 'Linesman has had an absolute mare in the Leyton Orient v Stockport playoff game. Kelman is about 3 yards offside and his flag stays down. Shocker, absolute shocker.' Another said: 'One of the worst offside calls I've ever seen in the Leyton Orient vs Stockport play-off game' Stockport County boss Dave Challinor described the decision as the 'worst' of his career One fan claimed the strike was the 'most outrageously offside goal you're ever likely to see' Another called the decision an 'absolute shocker', echoing the Stockport boss's thoughts Stockport are looking for back-to-back promotions and last played in the second tier in 2002 A further one added: 'One of the most outrageously offside goals you're ever likely to see. Like ever. In a play-off match too.' Stockport, who have never won an away play-off match in six attempts, were leading with just two minutes of normal time remaining. They will have to beat Orient at Edgelely Park on Wednesday if they are to achieve back-to-back promotions and reach the second tier for the first time in 23 years. The winners of the second leg will face Wycombe or Charlton in the final at Wembley on May 25.

Dave Challinor furious with officials as Stockport draw with Leyton Orient

Stockport boss Dave Challinor slated referee Ben Speedie for 'an absolute shocker' in awarding Leyton Orient their first goal as the League One play-off semi-final first-leg clash ended 2-2. Charlie Kelman, looking suspiciously offside, gave the O's a first-half advantage but two goals in five second-half minutes by Ollie Norwood, from the penalty spot, and Fraser Horsfall put the Hatters in front after 65 minutes. But Kelman, League One's leading scorer, was to have the last word when he netted from the spot to record his 23rd goal in the league this season after Horsfall was adjudged to have handled. Challinor said: 'Massive kudos to our players for reacting in a positive way to a decision which was the worst I've seen in my 15 years of management in what was the biggest game of my managerial career. 'I said earlier on this season that unfortunately promotion and relegation will be decided by not the two teams playing football. 'I've not spoken to the referee or linesman as of yet but the processes are all completely wrong. That was an absolute shocker. When someone is four yards offside that's really worrying. 'I can understand now why there is a scramble to get robots involved and stop human error because incidents like today cannot happen. 'People are putting tens of millions of pounds into football and things can be dictated by a flag and a whistle and that's not a good place to be. 'Credit to the players after the way they performed in the second half. Would I have taken that before the game? Arguably yes but we need to recover and set ourselves up for Wednesday evening which will be a massive game.' O's boss Richie Wellens insisted it was superb entertainment for the crowd. He said: 'It was a great spectacle and something the supporters can be proud of. 'It ebbed and flowed both ways. Our press was off but the first goal we scored gave us a lift and I thought we were the better team for the last 20 minutes of the first half. 'Second half we didn't get to the ball and kept giving it away. They kept putting balls in our box, we gave a penalty away and then conceded a set-play goal. 'It was my fault as I had two players ready to come on but it was catch 22. I didn't make it and possibly could have got them on before we conceded. 'I was told our first goal was offside. It's difficult to see from where I am. 'I've said before the referees have a huge impact on games at this stage of the season but I believe we should have had another penalty. 'Jordan Brown's absence was a big loss for us so hopefully we can get him back for Wednesday.'
