Brisbane Broncos star Reece Walsh says punching friend in face 'not a good look'

Reece Walsh posted on TikTok a video of him striking a friend in the face while wearing a boxing glove. Photo: Supplied / TikTok Broncos star Reece Walsh says he "doesn't support violence" after club bosses were left fuming over a video of their young gun punching a friend in the face that was uploaded to social media. The video shows Walsh taking a swing at a friend while wearing a boxing glove, knocking the man to the ground. "I was just having a laugh with my mate. Obviously we don't support violence and stuff like that but, yeah, it's not a good look for myself," Walsh said on the ABC's Today Show . "We were all just trying to have a laugh and a good time with friends but obviously we don't support violence and all those kind of things." He says it was 'just a joke' with his best mate. Club bosses aren't laughing Club bosses were reportedly angry about the video being uploaded to TikTok, and Walsh said Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy had spoken to the Origin representative on Tuesday night. "He was a bit disappointed in the post," Walsh said. "I feel like I could ... [have chosen my actions] a lot better. "I feel like I'm just having a laugh with my mate. And obviously putting it on social media, I know it's really important to try to keep those things away and I probably went a bit too far." Walsh's friend said no harm had been done in the incident. "Everything was for a laugh and nothing more ... we have mucked around like this our whole life," he wrote. -ABC

Furious Broncos investigating Reece Walsh punch video

The Brisbane Broncos are reportedly furious after footage emerged on social media of Reece Walsh punching a man to the ground. Code Sports first reported the video, which Walsh uploaded to his own TikTok account before deleting it. The clip, which you can watch below, shows Walsh in a social setting wearing a boxing glove and punching a friend in the head in an apparent prank between mates. Walsh later posted on Instagram: 'Just to add context to the video recently posted - it was a joke with me best mate no one was harmed, boys being boys', along with a face palm emoji. His friend wrote in an Instagram story: 'Everything was for a laugh and nothing more … We have mucked around like this our whole life.' Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy is aware of the footage, while Walsh's manager Nash Dawson told Code Sports: 'They're best mates. It was supposed to be a joke.' According to Code, the Broncos are 'furious' over the footage, and Walsh's decision to share it, especially in light of team's struggling form on the field. Walsh was on the sideline at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday with his daughter as the Broncos lost 30-26 to the Dragons. The star fullback launched his own YouTube channel on the weekend channel ReeceTV, which aims to give fans a glimpse into his off-field life. Walsh, 22, is currently sidelined with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee sustained during the round 7 game against the New Zealand Warriors. The injury made him unavailable for selection in Queensland's squad for the State of Origin opener, with Kalyn Ponga picked at fullback. The Broncos have a bye this weekend and Walsh could make his return to NRL action in next weekend's Round 13 game against Manly. Brisbane sit ninth on the ladder with scrutiny on Michael Maguire's coaching growing steadily throughout a relatively poor start to the season. Veteran forward Martin Taupau was released from his contract last week after he endorsed social media criticism of Maguire's coaching methods from a former NRL player who played under the Broncos coach.

Brisbane asked to get rid of Buck the mascot and change Broncos name

The Brisbane Broncos have dismissed a push from animal rights activists to have their famous mascot retired. Animal right advocacy group PETA have written an open letter to the Broncos asking that they not only retire Buck the mascot, but also change their name, even suggesting the Brisbane Boomerangs as an alternative. Buck has been an institution for the Broncos for decades, but PETA says the horse doesn't deserve 'the stress of being a mascot'. 'No matter how much effort and training is put into breaking a horse, they're prey animals with a strong fight-or-flight instinct, and it's nearly impossible to desensitise their instincts,' PETA said. 'Too often, even horses trained to the standard of military precision become spooked and run, injuring themselves and others when startled by loud noises, like pyrotechnics and fireworks, as well as sudden movements. 'PETA is asking the Brisbane Broncos to retire Buck and move away from imagery such as bucking broncos, which glorifies rodeos. 'The team could even adopt the name the 'Brisbane Boomerangs', after the impressive Aboriginal weapon — a nod to the team's fostering of Indigenous talent and commitment to equality.' PETA says Buck can't consent to his role and should therefore be relieved of it. 'Removing 'real' Buck from the field is the best 'conversion' the Broncos could make,' the statement goes on. 'Unlike real horses, the human inside the inanimate Buck costume can consent to running around a field in front of screaming fans, and no one is sitting on their back. 'Aside from the odd dry cleaning, Buck the costumed character doesn't need anywhere near the level of care a real horse does.' The animal rights group says the imagery sends the wrong message. 'Bucking bronco imagery glorifies rodeos, one of Queensland's cruellest and most backwards undertakings,' PETA said. 'During rodeos, humans use spurs, electric prods, and ropes to goad animals who are already stressed by confinement and travel to provoke their fight-or-flight response, just for human entertainment. 'Rodeos also put young, terrified calves at risk of serious injury and death during roping events, where frightened babies are brought down in whatever way possible. These animals are far from willing participants in such spectacles.' The Broncos rubbished the request, saying Buck won't be going anywhere. 'Buck is an iconic, much-loved and much-cared for member of the Broncos family and has been for a very long time,' Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said. 'We have no plans to retire Buck, and our gameday staff will continue, as we always have, to work with his trainers and rider, and the stadium to ensure the highest level of safety, for both Buck and our fans in stadia. 'We look forward to seeing Buck at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.'

Broncos make swift return to Brisbane

Broncos chief executive officer Dave Donaghy has confirmed the safe overnight arrival in Brisbane of the club's players and coaching staff following Thursday night's 50-14 demolition of the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium. Desperate to get home as soon as possible due to the impending Cyclone Alfred, the Broncos contingent boarded a chartered flight out of Sydney following the match and arrived at Toowoomba's Wellcamp Airport about 11.30pm (Queensland time). From there, the players and staff were put on a bus, which arrived in Brisbane at 1.30am on Friday. It's good to be back 😌 — Brisbane Broncos (@brisbanebroncos) March 6, 2025 'We are extremely grateful to the team at Wellcamp for opening up their gateway to Brisbane for us to allow us to get the team and staff back to their families,' Donaghy said. 'We would also like to sincerely thank the NRL, broadcasters and the Roosters for working with us to ensure we could leave the stadium as quickly as possible after the game. 'The safety and wellbeing of our people has always been our priority. 'We are thinking of all of our members, fans and the wider communities in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast and hope everyone stays safe today and into the weekend while we see how Cyclone Alfred pans out.' Following the NRL first-round match, Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds said it was the 'unknown' that was causing concern among the team. 'I don't think too many people have been through a cyclone, so for us it's about getting home as soon as possible to be with our loved ones and making sure that we're all OK,' Reynolds said. 'We are thinking of everyone that's going to be affected through the cyclone. 'It's not something we want to go through, but it's important to bunker down and make sure everyone is OK and just check in on each other. 'We had a job to do (against the Roosters) for 80 minutes, and now we can turn our attention to getting back home and being with our families.'
