Retired Pharmacist And Business Owner, David Ross, Selected As ACT Local Candidate For Motueka Ward
ACT Local has selected David Ross a retired pharmacist, business owner, and long-time rural healthcare advocate, as its candidate for the Motueka Ward for the Tasman District Council in this year's local election. After more than four decades in healthcare, business, and rural advocacy, Mahana local Dave Ross has put his name forward to represent the Motueka community on the Tasman District Council. A retired pharmacist and experienced business owner, Dave has long been involved in rural healthcare and governance. He and his wife have lived on their lifestyle block in Mahana for the past 20 years, and raised three children — now with three grandchildren of their own. He says the decision to stand came from a desire to see greater accountability and real consultation in local government. 'I'm standing for the Tasman District Council because our community deserves to be heard, not sidelined by bureaucracy or ideology. After years in pharmacy, business, and health advocacy, I know what it takes to listen, to lead, and to deliver results. I want to bring that experience to the table and help make sure ratepayers are treated with the respect they deserve.' – David Ross Earlier this year, ACT New Zealand announced it would be standing Common Sense Candidates for local government for the first time — after hearing from New Zealanders across the country who are sick of rising rates, ballooning budgets, and councils that ignore the basics while chasing ideological vanity projects. When you vote ACT Local, you know what you're getting: ACT Local Government spokesperson Cameron Luxton says: ' ACT Local candidates are community-minded Kiwis who've had enough of wasteful councils treating ratepayers like ATMs. It's time to take control on behalf of ratepayers — to restore accountability and deliver real value for money. ACT Local is about getting the basics right: maintaining roads, keeping streets clean, and respecting the people who pay the bills. Our candidates won't divide people by race or get distracted by climate vanity projects. They're here to serve, not lecture."

GE Vernova to supply gas turbines for new Missouri power plant
March 28 (Reuters) - GE Vernova (GEV.N), opens new tab has secured an order to supply its aeroderivative gas turbines for Springfield City Utilities' (CU) new power generating station in Missouri, the power equipment maker said on Friday. CU's 100 Megawatt (MW) McCartney Generating Station is expected to start operations in 2027. GE Vernova did not disclose the deal value or the expected delivery date of the turbines. The Reuters Power Up newsletter provides everything you need to know about the global energy industry. Sign up here. CONTEXT Energy-intensive data centers needed to scale artificial intelligence technologies are expected to push up demand for gas turbines used for large-scale power generation. Aeroderivative gas turbines, adapted from General Electric's (GE.N), opens new tab aviation technology, can be used to provide about 50 MW of power, opens new tab in a fuel-efficient manner, as per GE Vernova's website. WHY ITS IMPORTANT Rising electricity needs, aging power plants and severe weather are necessitating higher Planning Reserve Margin (PRM). PRM is the extra capacity needed beyond the expected demand to keep the power supply stable during times of peak usage or unexpected outages. The three aeroderivative units are expected to inject an additional 150 MW of reliable and flexible capacity to help ensure grid stability, Vernova said. These turbines can burn up to 100% hydrogen by volume, thereby reducing carbon emissions, the company said. KEY QUOTE "With increasing power generation demand driven by growing electrification needs and more renewables coming online every day, operators and municipalities ... need to ensure grid reliability with high efficiency," said CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power Americas region, Dave Ross.

NRG, GE Vernova, Kiewit Have Plan to Build Four New Gas-Fired Power Plants
NRG Energy is joining with GE Vernova and Kiewit Corp. in a plan to build four new natural gas-fired power plants. The companies on Feb. 26 said the venture is designed to help supply the energy-intensive data center and artificial intelligence sector. 'The accelerating demand for electricity in part due to GenAI [generative artificial intelligence] and the buildup of data centers means we need to form new, innovative partnerships to quickly increase America's dispatchable generation,' said Robert J. Gaudette, executive vice president and president of NRG Business and Wholesale Operations. 'Working together, these three industry leaders are committed to executing with speed and excellence to meet our customers' generation needs.' Tech companies are moving quickly to secure energy for a buildout of data centers globally and across the U.S. POWER on Feb. 26 published a POWER Primer with a wealth of information about the data center industry. POWER plans an event focused on data centers that will be held Oct. 28 in Denver, Colorado, prior to POWER's annual Experience POWER event Oct.29-31, also in Denver. The companies said the four plants, whose exact locations were not disclosed, would serve the ERCOT wholesale market in Texas, and the PJM wholesale market, a territory that includes 13 states in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic along with the District of Columbia. The groups said the four plants would have combined generation capacity of about 5,000 MW. 'These industry leaders aim to shorten the concept-to-electron timeline, ensuring that electricity generation capacity is quickly brought online to help meet demand,' the groups said, adding that the first facility—a 1,200-MW plant—would be expected to begin commercial operation in 2029, with the other three plans coming online through 2032. The groups said the first plant would use two GE Vernova model 7HA gas turbines. They said the 7HA, known as replicable and scalable, would 'have the potential to fill a future pipeline of 10-15 GW [of generation] and expand to other areas across the U.S.' 'GE Vernova is honored and excited that NRG has selected to own and operate our industry-leading 7HA gas turbine technology as they continue to increase their ability to serve their customers,' said Dave Ross, president and CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in the Americas. The new plants would add to NRG's power generation portfolio, which currently has about 13 GW of capacity. 'We're excited to be part of this agreement to deliver power generation projects to support the growth and demand of technology development in the U.S.,' said Dave Flickinger, executive vice president of Kiewit. 'Our long, successful track record as an EPC contractor in the power market will help us meet the speed, safety, quality and delivery demands of this venture—and serve as a strong partner to NRG and GE Vernova.' —Darrell Proctor is a senior editor for POWER.
