Southend Hospital to receive second new 'state-of-the-art' radiotherapy machine
A second new state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine is set to be introduced at Southend Hospital in a bid to provide faster cancer treatment. The new linear accelerator (LINAC) machine is set to be installed by March next year and will be funded by the government. This will sit alongside the current operating machine that was brought in earlier this year. The addition comes as part of the government's £70 million investment to enhance cancer care through its Plan for Change. David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, expressed his delight at the news. Mr Burton-Sampson said: "It is great that we are one of the lucky ones earmarked to receive a new radiography machine at our hospital. "It is fantastic news for people needing crucial cancer care. "It was wonderful to go to the hospital only last week and see the newly installed LINAC machine, to now hear we will be getting another in a few months' time is a huge leap forward for treatment in our city. "This modern technology will reduce delays, which is critically important when treating cancer. "It will improve outcomes for everyone. "The new machines mean that some people will need fewer rounds of treatment, and they will receive more precise treatments, which helps them to recover sooner." "This government said it would fix the NHS and it is doing exactly that. "I welcome the improvements in care at our hospital; it is excellent news for patients and their families." This comes after a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Southend Hospital earlier this week to mark the opening of the first LINAC machine. This introduction was described as a "major step forward" in cancer treatment across Essex, and is part of a £5.3million purpose-built extension to the radiotherapy department at Southend Hospital. The first machine has already been in use for several weeks, with 20 patients having received daily radiotherapy courses.

MPs applying pressure for more play-off tickets
Labour politicians in Southend-on-Sea say they will "keep the pressure on" to persuade Wembley Stadium to release more tickets for the National League play-off final. The allocation for the Blues and opponents Oldham Athletic have been increased to 21,500 tickets each, not including packages that include coach travel. But two MPs and a council leader said they "continue to implore [Wembley] to allow more fans into the ground". The stadium says it is concerned about safety and has pointed out that no London Underground trains are stopping at Wembley Park station due to engineering work. An extra 2,722 promotion final tickets went on sale at 12:00 (BST) on Monday. Following a meeting with Wembley Stadium, the club said it had secured an additional 1,059 tickets along with 1,663 tickets that will be sold as part of coach packages. A spokesperson for the club said: "We remain committed to pushing all stakeholders to find a solution to the capacity issues." The two Southend MPs Bayo Alaba and David Burton-Sampson, together with Southend-on-Sea City Council leader Daniel Cowan, said they had been "working hard over the weekend trying to build support for our campaign to increase the ticket allocation". In a joint statement, they said: "We will continue to push for more, as we want to ensure the final allocation is meaningful and maximised." Southend United said it was told the capacity was increased for both clubs because extra train services had since been scheduled for Wembley Central and Wembley Stadium stations. The club said it was confident it could sell more than 35,000 tickets. "We are still pushing all stakeholders to think creatively and to find solutions that can safely increase the capacity further," a club spokesperson said. Former Southend, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and England striker Stan Collymore posted on X, to say he had spoken to the Mayor of London's office about the issue. The mayor's office was hopeful that supporter capacity would be upped to at least 60,000 following the next safety meeting on Tuesday, he told his followers. A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said "the safety and security of fans" was of "paramount importance". The engineering work at Wembley Park could not be moved to another weekend, they explained. Transport for London said it had arranged for more Bakerloo line trains to serve Wembley Central. Chiltern Railways will be putting on extra services to Wembley Stadium. The final is due to kick off at 15:00 BST on Sunday. Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. National League final ticket allocation increased
Southend United and Oldham Athletic have confirmed that their respective ticket allocations for the National League play-off final at Wembley have been increased. Both clubs have been given an allocation of 21,500 tickets for the final, which takes place on Sunday, 1 June, having first been granted 17,500. An initial reduced allocation had been given to both clubs due to the closure of Wembley Park station due to engineering works taking place. David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, said on Sunday he had contacted government ministers over the amount of tickets being sold. Southend said that the previous allocation "did not come close to reflecting the scale of demand" from their supporters with Oldham adding that their supporters felt a "deep frustration" at the capped attendance. The Latics said that the club has been in daily contact with the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who has been engaging directly with London mayor Sadiq Khan in a bid to increase the available capacity. The club also said that they were in "regular discussions" with local MP Jim McMahon. In a further update issued on X on Sunday, the Shimpers said they could "sell in excess of 35,000 tickets" if they were allowed but confirmed that the tickets they currently had available had sold out, while a further smaller amount would go on sale on Monday. "Whilst we are pleased with the progress that has been made, we are still pushing all stakeholders to think creatively and to find solutions that can safely increase the capacity further," a Southend statement added.
