Athletics shake up roster during 9-game losing streak
Mired in a nine-game losing streak, the Athletics shook up their roster Friday and called up five players, including highly touted prospect Denzel Clarke. Veteran Seth Brown was designated for assignment amid moves that general manager David Forst hopes will give the club more flexibility. 'Ultimately, obviously we're in a stretch right now we're not finding ways to win,' Forst said in a video news conference. 'I think we're better than we've shown the last 10 days.'

'I think we're better than we've shown the last 10 days.' Clarke, a 25-year-old center fielder known for his standout defense, speed and power, was the team's fourth round selection in the 2021 amateur draft. He was set to start and make his major league debut Friday night for the A's (22-29) in the opener of a three-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies at home in West Sacramento. Clarke was batting .286 with no home runs, 21 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 31 games with Las Vegas. His .436 on-base percentage ranked fourth in the Pacific Coast League. Also recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas were left-hander Jacob Lopez and infielder CJ Alexander, while catcher Willie MacIver and infielder Logan Davidson were selected from Las Vegas. During the skid, the club has been outscored 72-26, is batting .209 and has a team ERA of 8.23 while allowing 23 home runs. Outfielder JJ Bleday was optioned to Triple-A along with right-hander Carlos Duran and catcher Jhonny Pereda. The A's also transferred second baseman Zack Gelof to the 60-day injured list. Forst said Bleday needed a 'reset' to find a rhythm at the plate and on defense — something he couldn't find playing every day at the big league level right now. Manager Mark Kotsay spoke to Bleday on Friday about the move. 'Hopefully he'll be back here very soon,' Forst said. Third baseman Gio Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list after straining his left hamstring in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. He underwent an MRI on Friday. Urshela left the game in the sixth inning with the injury of the 10-5 defeat. Urshela went 1 for 2 with a bases-loaded walk in the game. He is batting .224 with no homers and 13 RBIs in 32 games this season. The 32-year-old Brown had been the longest-tenured player on the team but struggling to get regular opportunities. He spent time in the minor leagues last year for a stretch and Forst remained hopeful of him clearing waivers and playing for Las Vegas before returning at some point to the A's. He was hitting .192 with a home run and three RBIs in 33 games. ___ AP MLB:

Athletics make return trip to San Francisco and face Giants for a different Bay Bridge Series
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Athletics are back in the Bay area. For at least three days anyway. More than a year after announcing intentions to leave their long-time home in Oakland to play at a minor league facility in Sacramento while a new stadium in Las Vegas is being built, the A's made the journey south to face the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series that began Friday. For Athletics general manager David Forst, that meant a trip across the Bay Bridge that used to take 20 minutes turned into a 90-mile afternoon drive. 'I thought I would have an easier commute today than I've had earlier, but the bridge traffic is terrible,' Forst joked while sitting in the visitor's dugout at Oracle Park. Forst chose to speak to reporters in order to prevent manager Mark Kotsay from having to field all the questions about the A's return to the area. The annual games between the two Northern California opponents was originally dubbed the Bay Bridge Series, although a few fans attending Friday's game wore shirts declaring that it is now the Highway 80 Battle of the Bay. Despite the A's move to the state capital, Forst believes the inter-league rivalry between the teams will continue. 'A's-Giants, I think, will be sort of the same rivalry for a while,' Forst said. 'There's obviously generations of fans who will see A's and Giants and think of it the same way, but it's definitely different. We're not right across the Bay. 'There are enough people remaining who have seen it this way for 15-20 years. (Giants manager and former A's skipper Bob Melvin) is on the other side. Our coaches all played in part of this rivalry, so yeah.' In years past, players from both teams needed only to make a quick drive across the Bay Bridge to play in the Bay Bridge Series. This year, the A's were returning from a road trip to Los Angeles and flew into Oakland late Thursday and are staying at a hotel in San Francisco. 'The rivalry, it's been fun to be a part of,' A's manager Mark Kotsay said. 'Having Bob on the other side isn't necessarily a rivalry. I look at him as a mentor. I look at him as a friend. Do I want to win? Yes. Does he want to win? Absolutely. In terms of it not being the Bay Bridge Series, there's still a lot of excitement around this series.' ___ AP MLB:
