Howard finishes in style to claim East of Ireland title

David Howard (Fota Island) birdied his final hole to claim the East of Ireland Men's Open Championship at Co Louth Golf Club. The 25-year-old finished at five-under-par, one ahead of Robert Abernethy (Dun Laoghaire) to claim the strokeplay title. Howard birdied four of his opening six holes, but then four bogeys in a row from the seventh undid all his good work. However, he was able to recover his composure to birdie 12 and 14. A bogey on 17 dropped him back into a tie with Abernethy, but a closing birdie four on the par-5 18th clinched the title. The young Cork mechanic quit his day job last year to follow his dream of becoming a professional golfer despite having Cystic Fibrosis (CF). 'I am pursuing a career in golf at the moment which is scary and exciting at the same time,' he told the Irish Examiner. 'I started getting good three or four years ago and thought I might as well give it a go. I don't want to regret anything down the line,' he said. €140 billion needed to pay for 300,000 home target, says PII

A total of €140 billion in public and private funding will be needed to reach the Government's housing delivery target of 300,000 homes by 2030, according to a new report. The research, which was launched at a Property Industry Ireland (PII) conference on Thursday, found that in order to reach the annual housing delivery target of 60,000 homes, development funding would need to be increased to an estimated €31.1 billion in annual recycling development capital. The average development cost of each unit is estimated to be €466,000 according to the report, conducted by Big Four accountancy firm KPMG on behalf of Ibec's property sector association. 'Identifying the funding sources needed to deliver these homes is only the first step,' said the director of Property Industry Ireland, David Howard, 'We also need the right policy measures to ensure Ireland remains an attractive location for investment.' READ MORE Mr Howard said the headline €140 billion figure does not include the cost of providing necessary infrastructure which is 'a prerequisite for housing delivery' and would be needed to attract the private investment to fund the construction. Within that figure, to support the targeted State and State-supported ownership of 118,300 new social and affordable homes, the Ibec group said the Government would need to spend a total of €50.7 billion over the period. Reaching the housing delivery targets, the PII director said, 'requires certainty, both in the taxation of investment and within the planning system' and welcomed recent measured by the Government in aiding the progress of planning permission applications through the planning system. 'The upcoming Housing Plan 2025–2030 presents a pivotal opportunity to unlock sustainable housing delivery, address affordability, and restore confidence among investors, home builders, renters, and homebuyers alike,' he said. 'The sector is deeply committed to working with the Government to find solutions.'

Families displaced after fatal house explosion

Residents have been told there is "no definitive timescale" for when they will be able to return home after an explosion killed a man and destroyed properties. The blast on Saturday 12 April in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, saw people displaced and John Street closed to residents. The body of a 53-year-old man, later named by police as David Howard, was recovered under debris and a man was arrested on suspicion of murder. David Armiger, chief executive of Bassetlaw District Council, said help including psychological support was available for residents affected by the tragedy. He said most of the residents who were evacuated returned to their homes on Sunday evening and Monday morning However, people from 14 households still cannot return home and continue to be supported either by the local authority, their insurers or landlords. Armiger added there was no definitive times for the displaced residents to return home due to the ongoing investigation and need to make buildings safe. Three buildings which have significant structural damage will be demolished and more safety checks are set to continue at other properties. A 43-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder following the explosion has been questioned and bailed pending further investigation. "On Saturday evening, one of our communities experienced a tragic and traumatic event, an explosion at a house in Worksop," he said. "I'd like to thank the emergency services, specialist recovery teams and the wide number of agencies who were quick to respond, and for the work they have done in the days since to support the people who have been directly affected, and the wider community. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of David Howard who sadly lost his life. "I would also like to thank residents and the local community for their patience and compassion during this time. "We understand how difficult it is (to) live through this experience, and I would like to reassure you that support is available should you need it." Armiger has also thanked residents for their patience. He said: "Due to the ongoing investigation by Nottinghamshire Police, and the challenging process to make the impacted buildings safe, we are not able to provide a definitive timescale on how long residents may be out of their homes. "We have spoken to these residents to update them on the latest situation and will be providing them with an opportunity to briefly and safely return to their homes to collect some essential items and belongings in the near future. "The ongoing response to this incident is constantly evolving, and again, I would like to thank residents and the wider community for their patience and understanding during this difficult time."
