Maple Leafs Connected to NY Rangers Veteran Amid Offseason Retool

The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering an offseason of possible big changes after another early playoff exit. With over $26 million in projected cap space and a need to reshape the roster, Toronto is starting to get linked to several potential trade targets. Advertisement One name gaining traction is New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who could be on his way out of Manhattan. According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Leafs are among the teams that could pursue Kreider this summer. In a piece for The Fourth Period, Pagnotta noted that New York may shop the 34-year-old winger to free up space. 'Is Chris Kreider the right target? The New York Rangers are expected throw his name out there again as they try to free up some cap space," Pagnotta wrote. "The former 52-goal scorer had a down year, but his $6.5 million cap hit, and style of player, could fit nicely on the team's second line if they feel he can regain 30+ goal form.' Advertisement Kreider finished the season with 22 goals and 30 points in 68 games, a sharp decline from the 39-goal campaign he posted just a year earlier. Kreider has two years remaining on his seven-year, $45.5 million contract and holds a 15-team no-trade clause, holding some leverage in his potential destination. 'This is home for me,' Kreider said. 'This is the organization that gave me an opportunity to live out my dream.' Insider Shares 'Plausible' Mitch Marner Move for Maple Leafs Before Free Agency

Insider Shares 'Plausible' Mitch Marner Move for Maple Leafs Before Free Agency originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to prioritize re-signing captain John Tavares over Mitch Marner this offseason. Advertisement NHL insider David Pagnotta is reporting a growing likelihood that Marner will head to free agency on July 1, but the analyst presented an interesting and not-so-discussed scenario. In a May 30 article for The Fourth Period, Pagnotta outlined Toronto's situation with both veteran forwards and offered insight into the club's internal planning. "An extension for Tavares is much more likely than one with Marner at this point in time," Pagnotta wrote. "All indications are Marner is heading to free agency. "He hasn't closed the door on a return to Toronto, but he wants to evaluate his options." Tavares, who signed a seven-year, $77 million contract in 2018, has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay with the team. Advertisement Although the Leafs are expected to offer Tavares a lower-money contract, talks are expected to progress soon Meanwhile, Pagnotta said Marner's list of preferred destinations has narrowed to a few teams, mostly in the Western Conference, with the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights among those mentioned. "Do I believe they don't have an idea where they stand with Mitch Marner and John Tavares? Absolutely not," Pagnotta wrote. "But I get where [Treliving] is coming from." Advertisement "Could the Leafs trade his rights for a draft pick to give a team a headstart in contract negotiations?" Pagnotta wondered. "That seems more plausible." Sabres Searching For Senior Advisor To Join Management

The Buffalo Sabres are looking to make more changes to their management structure in addition to the hiring of Eric Staal as a special assistant last week, and reportedly have contacted some big names who are in the mix for other open positions. According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, Buffalo has approached former Detroit and Edmonton GM Ken Holland and former New Jersey, Toronto, and New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello to gauge interest in the senior advisor role that the club is looking to fill. Holland is reportedly in the mix for both the LA Kings and Islanders GM positions, and Lamoriello has in the past baulked at positions that did not have him in day-to-day control. Two factors that make the senior advisor with the Sabres questionable are the tenuous position of GM Kevyn Adams and what kind of say this advisor would have in hockey decisions. Adams is entering the final year of his contract, and if he is fired during or after next season, it would likely be a clean sweep of the club's management structure. Other names mentioned, like former NHL GM and ex-Sabres head coach Rick Dudley, have a similar position with the Florida Panthers, and might hesitate to leave an organization where his opinion is respected for a position in Buffalo more ceremonial. Report: Blue Jackets Express Interest In Krakens' Forwards

According to David Pagnotta, the Columbus Blue Jackets have expressed interest in the Seattle Kraken's pending UFA's. He also noted that multiple teams have thrown their names in the mix for the Kraken's forwards. Lots of eyes on Seattle this week. Tanev is expected to move. Gourde, who returned from injury last night, has generated a lot of interest. Clubs like Toronto, Tampa, Vegas, Ottawa, Columbus and others have poked around on one/both. Kraken also have players with term available. — David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) March 5, 2025 Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell has been rumored to be searching for a forward ahead of the deadline. Now that Seattle has officially positioned itself as a seller, Columbus can zero in on potential targets. Columbus Blue Jackets Ink Mathieu Olivier To A Long-Term Contract The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced the signing of Mathieu Olivier to a long-term contract today. Two names reportedly on the market are Brandon Tanev and Yanni Gourde. The Blue Jackets have shown interest in both, but Tanev appears to be the better fit. Both players would be rentals, but Tanev aligns more naturally with Columbus' needs. He can slot into the middle six and bring playoff-style intensity to the lineup. While Gourde is also a strong addition, his injury history this season and the fact that he would push someone out of the top six make him a less ideal target. 3 Columbus Blue Jackets Trade Targets For The Buffalo Sabres The Columbus Blue Jackets currently occupy the first wild card spot in the East with a chance to catch the New Jersey Devils. They have 68 points, while the Devils have 72, but the Blue Jackets have two games in hand. In a perfect scenario, if Waddell could land both, the Blue Jackets would significantly improve their forward depth. However, based on Waddell's public comments and the expected asking price, Tanev seems like the more realistic and logical move for Columbus.
