Griffin Museum of Science and Industry getting $10 million renovation
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is getting a $10 million facelift.
Why it matters: The south side museum is undergoing the renovation to open not long after the Obama Presidential Center and will pay homage to the museum's history by opening up access to the original south entry from Jackson Park, the site of the 1893 World's Fair.
Fun fact: The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry building is the only "White City" structure remaining from the exposition.
Zoom in: In addition to increased accessibility, the museum will have a cafe and a terrace overlooking the Jackson Park Lagoon.
The intrigue: The project is funded by a $10 million gift from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the largest grant the foundation has given in its more than 40-year history.
What they're saying:"Restoring the South Portico is not only about preserving a historic architectural treasure but also supporting the museum's efforts to connect more deeply with the community," said David Vitale, museum board chair.
What's next: Construction is slated to start in the spring and is expected to be completed in 2027.
The museum will remain open during the renovation.
