Countdown to Kickoff: Davon Godchaux is the Saints Player of Day 92
Countdown to Kickoff: Davon Godchaux is the Saints Player of Day 92 Trading for Davon Godchaux could improve the Saints' run defense. The New Orleans Saints sit 92 days away from their 2025 regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. New Orleans will also have a new player in jersey number 92 this season. Defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon wore 92 for the last two years. The number stays on the defensive line this year, but will now go to Davon Godchaux after an offseason trade. Today we take a closer look at Godchaux, our Saints Player of the Day. Name (age): Davon Godchaux (30) Davon Godchaux (30) Hometown: Plaquemine, La. Plaquemine, La. Position: Defensive tackle Defensive tackle Height, weight: 6-foot-3, 330 pounds 6-foot-3, 330 pounds Relative Athletic Score: 2.52 2.52 College: LSU Tigers LSU Tigers Drafted: Round 5, 178th overall in 2017 (Miami Dolphins) Round 5, 178th overall in 2017 (Miami Dolphins) NFL experience: 8 seasons 8 seasons 2025 salary cap hit: $1,944,000 An all-state defensive lineman at Plaquemine Senior High School in Louisiana, Godchaux stayed close to home with his choice of Louisiana State over recruiting pitches from other SEC powers. He'd become a starter midway through his freshman year, playing both end and inside for the LSU defense. Over his last two seasons with the Tigers, Godchaux had 12.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. The Miami Dolphins selected Godchaux with the 34th choice in Round 5 of a loaded 2017 draft. He appeared in 15 games as a rookie, starting five and playing over 50% of the defensive snaps. In four years with Miami, Godchaux had 3 sacks with 19 pressures and 12 tackles for negative yardage. He'd hit free agency in 2021, where he'd be signed by the New England Patriots. Godchaux played the last four seasons in New England. Over that time he'd have 2.5 sacks with 16 pressures and 8 tackles for loss while averaging around 60% of the defensive snaps. New Orleans dealt a 2026 seventh round draft choice to the Patriots this offseason to acquire Godchaux. It's likely that he'll compete for the nose tackle spot in new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley's 3-4 scheme. He'll have plenty of competition for a job. The Saints return tackles Bryan Bresee, Nathan Shepherd, Khalen Saunders, and Khristian Boyd. They also drafted Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton in the third round this Saints ranked an abysmal 31st against the run last year and 30th in overall defense. Staley was brought in to reverse those results. Trading for Davon Godchaux could give the Saints a run-stopping presence in the middle to tie up double-teams and clog inside rushing lanes.

2025 Saints roster has more LSU Tigers than players from any other college program
2025 Saints roster has more LSU Tigers than players from any other college program Tennessee has the second-most alumni in New Orleans So much for the narrative that says the New Orleans Saints overlook players in their own backyard. It felt like decades went by without any star talent going down the river from Baton Rouge to New Orleans -- but these days there are more LSU Tigers on the Saints' roster than players coming from anywhere else. And they're playing some pretty big roles between Tyrann Mathieu and Davon Godchaux, both projected starters on defense, with fiery tight end Foster Moreau and veteran running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire competing for snaps offensively. The Saints brought back offensive lineman Will Clapp this spring, too, who has some experience playing in Kellen Moore's offense. But where else have the Saints looked to draw talent from? Whether it's in the annual NFL draft or signing veteran free agents, they've gone from coast to coast and even beyond the United States searching for help. Here's the full breakdown, (not counting Irish kicker Charlie Smyth, who joined the Saints through the International Pathway Program): 5 - LSU 4 - Tennessee 3 - Fresno State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon State, Texas 2 - Alabama, Boston College, Louisville, Northern Iowa, Oregon, SMU, South Carolina, South Dakota State, TCU, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Weber State, Wyoming 1 - Appalachian State, Arizona State, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Boise State, BYU, California, Clemson, Colorado State, Delaware, Duke, Eastern Kentucky, Fort Hays State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Marshall, Michigan, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Dakota State, Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Pittsburg State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas A&M, UCLA, Utah, UTSA, Wake Forest, Washington, Western Illinois, Wisconsin, Yale If you're curious about how this shakes out by conference, we've got you covered (again, not counting Smyth): 23 - SEC 15 - ACC 12 - Big Ten 8 - Big 12 7 - Mountain West 6 - Missouri Valley (FCS) 4 - Sun Belt 3 - Independents, Pac-12 2 - Big Sky (FCS), MIAA (Division II) 1 - AAC, Coastal (FCS), Conference USA, Ivy League (FCS), United (FCS) So that's 58 of 90 players coming from the "Power Four" conferences with 11 from the FCS level and two players coming out of Division II schools (Nathan Shepherd from Fort Hays State and Rico Payton from Pittsburg State, both in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Conference). These numbers going to change as the roster is churned over the summer, but we'll continue to keep track of them as the Saints work to build the best version of their team.

Davon Godchaux's immediate reaction to Patriots trading him to Saints
Davon Godchaux's immediate reaction to Patriots trading him to Saints Former New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux is headed back home to the state of Louisiana. On Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots had agreed to send the veteran defensive lineman to the New Orleans Saints in a trade for a seventh-round draft pick. A move was imminent after the team granted Godchaux permission to seek a trade. They ultimately landed on a deal with the Saints. The trade came less than a year after the Patriots signed Godchaux to a two-year contract extension. He had started in all but one game since he initially signed with the team back in 2021. In an Instagram post, he called the move to the Saints a "dream come true." "Home is where the heart is!," Gochaux posted. "Excited to be coming home and playing for the great state of Louisiana! A dream come true to play High school ball, College ball, and now NFL in the same state! So ready for this opportunity to play in front of WHODATNATION!! God makes no mistake." The Patriots will now look to rebuild their defensive line through free agency and the 2025 NFL draft. There's still a cloud of uncertainty surrounding defensive tackle Christian Barmore's health status, but the team is obviously hoping he'll make a return at some point. They'll have their work cut out for them in rebuilding a struggling unit that was once considered a position of strength for the team.

Patriots trading veteran DT to Saints in exchange for draft pick
Patriots trading veteran DT to Saints in exchange for draft pick Sources: The #Patriots are trading DT Davon Godchaux, a starter for four seasons, to the #Saints in exchange for a 7th round draft pick. Godchaux, a Plaquemine, La. native & LSU product, goes home. Kellen Moore starts to build the way Philly did — thru the trenches. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 10, 2025 The New England Patriots are reportedly sending veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. A move seemed imminent for Godchaux after the team gave him permission to seek a trade. Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed reported that scheme fit was a concern, with Mike Vrabel taking over the head coaching job in New England. There were also leadership concerns, particularly after "comments he made to the media following games that rankled staff members." Now, Godchaux will get a fresh start in the NFC in 2025 with the Saints. The Patriots are now without Godchaux, and Christian Barmore's health status remains a mystery as well. There is some serious work to do on the defensive line in New England to ensure the unit isn't as bad, if not worse, than it was last season. They kick-started the rebuild on Sunday by agreeing to a three-year deal with former Pro Bowl edge rusher Harold Landry III. We'll see if they can keep the train rolling in free agency this week.

Patriots grant starting DT permission to seek trade ahead of free agency
Patriots grant starting DT permission to seek trade ahead of free agency The #Patriots have given DT Davon Godchaux permission to seek a trade, sources say. There has been contact with interested teams, and the veteran is likely on the move given the team's defensive scheme shift. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 26, 2025 The New England Patriots have reportedly given veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux permission to seek a trade to another team, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Per Rapoport, other teams have already shown interest in Godchaux, who is expected to be moved due to the Patriots' defensive scheme shift. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday that he expects the roster to be "vastly different" by the end of August as opposed to what it currently looks like. It would appear as if moving on from Godchaux is part of those plans. Godchaux agreed to a two-year, $21 million extension with the Patriots in July 2024. The Patriots will have some major question marks along the defensive front if Godchaux is no longer in the picture. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore missed most of the 2024 season after being diagnosed with blood clots. There's no certainty on when or if he'll be available next season.
