Montgomery County parents against potential rehab facility near elementary school

BROOKVILLE, Md. (DC News Now) — Parents and neighbors in Montgomery County are raising the alarm about a potential drug rehabilitation center opening right next to an elementary school. Parents say the proposed sites are inappropriate because of how close they are to young children. Greenwood Elementary School parents say two homes are expected to be turned into drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities just yards away from the school. 'If this facility opens, we're putting our kids and the teachers in this building in a position where there's a new heightened safety concern,' said parent Caitlyn Thompson. Parents also say the company that will operate the facilities, USR Holdings, has not been transparent. Parents are now circulating a petition to stop them from opening. It also says the county has no approval authority. The permit is approved by the state. DC News Now reached out to USR Holdings, which pointed out that they have received discriminatory and derogatory comments about people who suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues but would not provide further comment. DC News Now also reached out to the Maryland Department of Health and Montgomery County Council Member Dawn Luedtke but did not hear back at the time of publication.
