605 Day 5K to help the Alzheimer's Association

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Lucas Hamilton runs for a myriad of reasons. 'I try to stay active with two kids. I think I need to stay active,' runner Lucas J. Hamilton said. But tonight he is running for a cause that is close to his heart. 'About ten years ago, my grandmother passed away from Alzheimer's disease. And this was when I was in graduate school studying aging and dementia. So that's how I got connected to it initially. And then, I learned shortly thereafter that my wife's grandfather also passed away from dementia of a different kind. So it's just been consistently in our lives,' Hamilton said. ICE arrest at Minnehaha County Courthouse It's part of the 605 Day 5k that benefits the Alzheimer's Association. The run and walk is a collaborative effort between the Alzheimer's Association and 605 Running Company. 'Alzheimer's Association, they approached me. They want to do some sort of event. They have a series of fundraising events that they do. And this was an event that I had sort of already pre-baked and so it was just a nice pairing,' owner 605 Running Company, Greg Koch said. But there will be more at the event than just running and walking. 'We'll have a food truck coming for anyone who wants to watch or anyone, runners or walkers who want some snacks afterwards. And, the Alzheimer's Association will have a table with a freewill donation, you can decorate a luminary to honor loved ones. So if you currently have a loved one who is living with Alzheimer's or dementia, or you've lost someone, you can decorate a luminary in their honor,' Development Director, SD Alzheimer's Association, Carla Thielbar said. Giving people a good reason to walk, run, or stroll for a cause. 'Alzheimer's impacts everyone. Currently, there are 16,500 South Dakotans living with Alzheimer's. There are 27,000 family caregivers helping care for these people. And unfortunately, with statistics, eventually we'll all be touched,' Thielbar said. 'Come on out, donate, support. It's a great cause,' Koch said. With June 5, being 605 day, the event is starting at 6:05 p.m. While registration for the run and walk is closed, you can still show up to participate in the other activities and to cheer the runners on.
