Fall River police: Be prepared for road closures, detours during Day of Portugal festival
FALL RIVER — Day of Portugal descends upon the Gates of the City plaza this weekend. Be prepared for fun and feasting, but also road closures as three-day event gets underway June 6 on Ponta Delgada Boulevard. The Fall River Police Department has advised motorists traveling in the area of Ponta Delgada Boulevard to plan ahead and expect detours to accommodate the festival, which takes place Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 8. Ponta Delgada Boulevard will be closed between Anawan Street and the Water Street Connector during the festival hours. Those looking to get to restaurants and businesses along nearby Ferry Street – such as Morgan's Cantina, Pier 52, Tipsy Seagull, Tipsy Toboggan, Canned Heat or Stumpy's Hatchet House – will need to use one of the following detour routes during the closure: — Broadway Extension Ramp to Water Street Connector to Ponta Delgada Boulevard to Ferry Street — Columbia Street to Ponta Delgada Boulevard to Ferry Street — William Street to Almond Street to Ferry Street Those attending the festival are encouraged to take advantage of free shuttle service provided by the city of Fall River for easy access to the festival. Shuttles will be running Friday through Sunday every 25 to 35 minutes from the following parking areas: — Fall River Municipal Credit Union on Milliken Boulevard — T.A. Restaurant on Morgan Street — Alexandra's on Morgan Street — 10 North Main Street — 1 Pearl Street parking garage Additional parking is available at Santo Christo Credit Union, Santo Christo Church (Friday and Sunday only) and Chaves Market on Columbia Street, but no shuttle service is offered at these locations. ‘Day of Portugal' celebrations held across southern New England
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — State and local leaders are gathering across southern New England to celebrate Portuguese heritage. It kicked off on Sunday with a flag-raising ceremony at the Portuguese Discovery Monument in Newport. On Monday, there will be flag-raising ceremonies in Bristol at 11 a.m., East Providence at 1:30 p.m., and Coventry at 5 p.m. Then on Tuesday, there will be ceremonies in Central Falls and Cranston. In Fall River, the city is hosting three days' worth of events from Friday through Sunday. In New Bedford, a four-day feast returns to Madeira Field from June 12-15. The Day of Portugal is officially celebrated on June 10. In Portugal, it's officially called 'Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas,' which translates to 'Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.' The day was created to remember the death of poet Luís de Camões, who is recognized as the country's greatest national icon. Camões is best known for his epic poem, Os Lusíadas, which is a tribute to the golden age of Portugal's maritime exploration and discoveries. ‘Day of Portugal' license plates available for preorder in RI
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island is full of Portuguese culture, and now drivers can show off their heritage. The Rhode Island Day of Portugal unveiled its charity plate on Wednesday. The Day of Portugal is celebrated on June 10. In Portugal, it's officially called 'Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas,' which translates to 'Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.' The day was created to remember the death of poet Luís de Camões, who is recognized as the country's greatest national icon. Camões is best known for his epic poem, Os Lusíadas, which is a tribute to the golden age of Portugal's maritime exploration and discoveries. RELATED: Newport festivals license plates available for preorder The plates can be ordered on the Rhode Island Day of Portugal website. A set costs $42.50, of which $20 will go toward the Rhode Island Day of Portugal, benefiting the Portuguese culture, language and history in the state. Like all charity plates, they will not go into production until 600 have been preordered. Only passenger plates are available at this time. According to the website, the DMV can fit just five or fewer digits on the license plate. Drivers who have a six-digit license plate and want a Day of Portugal plate must go to the DMV to transfer their current plate number. Motorcycle shark license plates available for pickup Saturday
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Motorcyclists in Rhode Island can start showing off their new shark license plates this weekend. The Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI) announced that preordered motorcycle plates will be available for pickup on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Russ' Ocean State Harley-Davidson on Albany Road in Warwick. The plate, which was designed and painted by marine artist Paul McPhee, is the fastest-growing charity plate in Rhode Island history, according to the ASI. The ASI is also the first organization in the state to get a motorcycle charity plate on the road. ALSO READ: Vulnerable shark species spotted in Great Salt Pond Like all charity plates, the DMV wasn't able to put them into production until 600 were preordered. Anyone who ordered their plates before May 18 will be able to pick them up, as well as enjoy some treats and giveaways and get their picture taken with the new plates. The plates feature a large mako shark, which the ASI says is now endangered worldwide. The plates can be ordered on the Atlantic Shark Institute website. The cost is $42.50 for a set of plates, with $20 from each plate fee benefiting the ASI.
