Former Flyers coach named GM of Phoenix Suns
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A former head coach for the Dayton Flyers will soon be making the roster decisions for the Phoenix Suns. The Suns announced Thursday a shift to their front office operations. One of those changes will see former NBA player and previous Suns general manager James Jones transition to the role of senior advisor. With Jones' move, the Suns have hired Brian Gregory as their new GM. Gregory first joined the Suns in 2023, serving as vice president of player programming. His responsibilities included supervising player personnel and scouting. 'Brian has been a valuable member of our front office, playing an integral role in drafting and developing our young players,' said Suns Governor Mat Ishbia, in a press release. 'I am excited for him to step in to the role of general manager. He is a brilliant basketball mind, and he will transform and elevate our team.' Gregory was the head coach for the Flyers for 8 seasons, between 2003 and 2011, where he won the NIT Championship in 2010. In total he has 19 seasons of experience as a NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball coach, coaching at the University of South Florida, Georgia Tech and the aforementioned University of Dayton. He also was an assistant coach at Michigan State, the University of Toledo and at Northwestern University. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Georgia basketball transfer guard finds new home
One of Georgia's key bench scorers is heading to a new team. Georgia guard De'Shayne Montgomery is transferring to the Dayton Flyers. Montgomery is ranked as the No. 196 player and the No. 54 shooting guard in the transfer portal, per 247Sports. Advertisement Montgomery is one of four Georgia players to enter the transfer portal. He joins guard Silas Demary (committed to UConn), power forward RJ Godfrey (committed to Clemson), and point guard Savo Drezgic (uncommitted). Montgomery started out his college basketball career with the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, where he looked like an effective three-and-defense shooting guard, earning 13.2 points per game, 1.7 steals per game, and a shooting 41.2% from behind the arc. He transferred to the Georgia Bulldogs for his second season, expecting to be a key contributor to the team. Unfortunately, he played just 17 games because he was academically ineligible for the first 10 games. Afterward, all of his numbers went down, with just 6.5 points and 1.1 steals per game on 25% three-point shooting. Still, Montgomery impressed in the first three games of the season, earning 16 points per game with a 57.1% three-point percentage. The Dayton Flyers are looking for that side of him to emerge. Dayton is coming off a disappointing season where they narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament. This article originally appeared on UGA Wire: UGA basketball transfer commits to Atlantic 10 school
