Officers find 6 baby opossums while serving search warrant in Dayton

Some officers made an unusual discovery while serving a search warrant in Dayton. Two opossums wanted to spend some extra time with one officer. 'Caring for sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife beyond the time necessary to transport the animal to a permitted rehabilitator is against the law.' A man was pulled over in Dayton after he drove through an active school zone while on his phone. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] A Sergeant with the Dayton Police Department pulled over a man after he spotted him driving in an active school zone while on his phone, according to a video on the department's YouTube. The man was on his phone while also not wearing a seatbelt. He was cited for both offenses, according to the video. 'You're actually in an active school zone with school flashing lights and children leaving school while you were on the cell phone, so that enhances that even more,' the Sergeant exlpained in the video. They said on social media Monday night that Monument Avenue is back open. 'Work is continuing and progressing to open additional roads downtown as fencing and barriers are being removed,' the department said. Our news crew was there Monday night when the fences were torn down at Riverscape MetroPark and Monument Avenue. Some people are glad things are back to normal. 'I hope they don't do this to us again because it was just too big of an inconvenience,' said Christine Pollard. Crews continue to work on removing the fencing around Downtown Dayton. ‘Too big of an inconvenience;' Community glad NATO Village fencing is coming down, roads reopening

Downtown Dayton residents say they're happy that the NATO Parliamentary Assembly has come to an end. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00, Dayton police said crews are working to tear down 14,000 feet of fencing and 6,000 feet of concrete barriers that served as temporary security for the NATO Village. Crews started taking down the fencing at Riverscape Metropark Monday afternoon, and have since reopened Monument Avenue. >>RELATED: Fences, barricades surrounding NATO Village coming down They still have several streets to reopen and fencing to tear down. 'I hope they don't do this to us again,' Christine Pollard said. Pollard lives in the Biltmore Towers on Main Street. The building was inside the secure NATO Village. 'I had to come out the front of the building and go across to the north main bridge and around that river just to get to the store,' Pollard said. She said she's glad the NATO Assembly is over. UPDATE: 4 hospitalized after crash involving police officer in Dayton

Four people are in the hospital after a crash involving a Dayton police officer Monday night, according to Dayton Police Department Sergeant Zachary Banks. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The two-car crash occurred at the intersection of Troy Street and Keifer Street around 8:20 p.m. TRENDING STORIES: 'Sick individual;' Police arrest man for taking photos of children during Memorial Day parade 12-year-old shot in face while cleaning house, family says Wholesale retailer gets into pizza delivery business The officer was driving south on Troy Street responding to a call at the time of the crash, according to Banks. The cruiser's lights and sirens were not activated. Banks said witnesses on scene told him a silver car involved pulled out in front of the cruiser. Two adults and a baby were inside this car at the time. The adults were hospitalized with serious injuries and the baby was taken to Dayton Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Banks. The officer was also hospitalized with minor injuries. Banks said everyone involved in this crash is expected to be okay.
