Dayton student awarded scholarship from Gates Foundation
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Dayton Public Schools District announced on Wednesday that one of its students was awarded with the Gates scholarship.
The scholarship is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is a highly selective, nationally touted award.
Since 2000, the district has seen 19 students receive the award, now they can add one more to that total, as Paul Laurence Dunbar's own Simeon Akins earned the scholarship this year.

Akins is Paul Laurence Dunbar's Valedictorian and is known for his remarkable academic record and deep commitment to leadership, service and development.
'This honor is a testament to Simeon's hard work, dedication, and limitless potential. 'We are incredibly proud of him and are excited to see the amazing impact he will continue to make in the world,' said Dr. David Lawrence, superintendent of Dayton Public Schools.
With the grant, Akins will receive full financial coverage (tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation), mentoring and access to resources throughout his college career.
He plans to attend Belmont University this fall to major in either Computer Science or Music Production. He's also looking to minor in Art.
