Dayton VA fires portion of staff as part of nationwide cuts

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Department of Veteran Affairs has announced more layoffs, including some here in Dayton. The VA has dismissed over 1,400 probationary employees, after 1,000 workers were let go earlier this month. This comes as part of the Trump Administration's larger plan to shrink the federal government. VA axes another 1,400 employees The Dayton VA says this includes a 'small number' of their own probationary staff. Dayton VA officials say this will have no negative effect on Veteran healthcare, benefits or other services, and 'will allow VA to focus more effectively on its core mission of serving Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors,' according to a spokesperson. The federal department reports laid off individuals were 'non-mission critical' employees who have served less than two years. The agency defined some of these positions as diversity, inclusion and equity-related. The VA claims these layoffs will save more than $83 million per year, which they say will be redirected back toward healthcare, benefits and services. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
