DeKalb County Schools plan to adopt new millage rate, slight decrease compared to 2024
The DeKalb County School District announced it was getting ready to adopt a new millage rate, which would be slightly lower than the one in 2024. According to the district, the 2025 millage rate would be a tenth of a mill lower than 2024, at 22.78 mills. However, compared to the rollback level of 22.155 mills, the district said the property tax rate would be 2.82% higher. Before the school district can officially adopt the new rate, they have to hold three public hearings on the tax increase, per Georgia law. The school district said the new rate would equal about a $156.25 increase for non-homestead properties and a $109.38 increase for homes with homestead exemptions. The meetings will be held in the J. David Williamson Board Room at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Stone Mountain. Atlanta comic, gaming convention bringing in 10,000 ‘Mo' attendees than 2024
Atlanta comic and gaming convention MomoCon is continuing its growth trend with more than 10,000 extra attendees expected to hit the Downtown for Memorial Day Weekend. In 2024, MomoCon had about 50,000 people come through the city for costume contests, gaming tournaments, artist alleys and a variety of different celebrity guests. On top of the big turnout, MomoCon said it expects the event to have a $42.2 million impact on the metro Atlanta area over the weekend, or at least the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau does. Two decades ago, MomoCon started as a 700-person event on Georgia Tech's campus. This year, some of the guests are metro Atlanta natives, including: Shadia Amin - A Colombian cartoonist from Atlanta (SCAD grad) currently working on graphic novels. Greg Burnham (Norcross) is a comic book writer who's created indie comic hits Tuskegee Heirs,The Search For Sadiqah, Little Rock Files and The Story of Solace. His most recent is called 'Bridges,' where four super-powered girls band together to save Oakland from a group of evil bio-terrorists. Brian Stelfreeze - Comic book artist and an original member of Atlanta's Gaijin Studios. Stelfreeze has worked with Marvel, DC and 12 Gauge comics on characters including Batman, The Black Panther, and Catwoman. Body found inside burning Athens home
Hours after firefighters responded to a burning home in Athens, a body was found inside. Athens-Clarke County firefighters were called to a home on Briarcliff Road just after 2:15 a.m. on Monday. Because of the heavy fire and that the floor of the home had collapsed, crews could not get inside the building to search for anyone trapped. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Three hours later, crews found a body inside the home. That person's identity has not been released. The coroner's office is still working to confirm the official cause of death. DeKalb County Schools offline due to fiber optic issue, officials say
DeKalb County Schools confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that the district is dealing with a network outage at its schools and offices. According to a district spokesman, the outage is 'due to an external fiber optic circuit issue.' While the issue is being actively worked on, an estimate on when the network would be back online was not immediately available. 'The technology team is working with a third-party vendor to troubleshoot and restore connectivity as soon as possible,' the district said in a statement. DeKalb County Schools to break ground on new Sequoyah middle, high schools
DeKalb County Schools will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for its new middle school and high school. Channel 2 Action News first told you in April when the school board approved the Sequoyah Middle School and Sequoyah High School project. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton, board members and other school officials will speak at a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. The new Sequoyah Middle School and future Sequoyah High School will be on the same campus on Aztec Road. The schools will share some facilities, like the new sports fields and gymnasiums. Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach spoke with Sequoyah Middle School Principal Sedrick Anthony when the project was approved. 'People are excited, now able to see [it] come to fruition,' he said. Anthony said the current student population is more than 90% Hispanic, with English as a second language. He said the new schools will reenergize students, staff and the community as a whole. 'I would say a significant investment in students that have typically been marginalized so have opportunity to say you're important and you're invested,' Anthony said. The final contact approved by the school board includes a $230 million education special local option sales tax, or E-SPLOST.
