Keyshawn Davis Misses Weight By Wide Margin, What Happens Now?

Welp, Keyshawn Davis' reign as WBO lightweight champion didn't last long. The 26-year-old missed weight ahead of his first title defense against Edwin De Los Santos on Friday, and now Saturday's fight has taken on a different level of significance. Here's everything you need to know. Davis officially came in at 139.3 pounds. That's more than four pounds over the 135-pound lightweight limit. It wasn't a near miss. It was a full division above. He would have been on weight if this was a junior welterweight fight. As a result, he was immediately stripped of the WBO lightweight title. If you've ever heard the term losing the title on the scales, this is an example of that unfortunate but sometimes planned event. I can't say this was planned, but even if it was, in the eyes of some, this miss will result in a reputation hit for Davis. Missing weight is still largely viewed as being unprofessional. The fact that the weight miss happens ahead of Davis' fight in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia makes it less than ideal from a fan standpoint. Still, it's not something that is unprecedented or that Davis cannot overcome. The fight will still happen on Saturday night, but Davis has officially lost his belt. While Davis lost the right to defend his crown, De Los Santos remains in the title picture. He made weight at 134.7 pounds, meaning if he wins, the WBO belt becomes his. If Davis wins, the title stays vacant and we would have to wait to see if he wants to get back into shape to fight to regain the title he gave up on the scales. While Davis still has the option to try to continue his run at 135 pounds, this weight miss likely spells the end of his time at lightweight. He's always been a big lightweight and coming in over by that much suggests he may have outgrown the weight class. A move to 140 feels inevitable now. There would seemingly be a path to a title fight with Teofimo Lopez at 140 or the winner of Richardson Hitchins vs. George Kambosos Jr., Albert Puello, or Gary Antuanne Russell. Davis still has the talent to thrive in a new division and all of the potential fights are winnable for him. Davis vs. De Los Santos will still headline the ESPN card. Here's the viewing information. The undercard is scheduled to begin at 5:10 p.m. ET and will stream live on ESPN Plus. The main card kicks off at 10 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN Plus.

Keyshawn Davis stripped of WBO title after massive weight miss, Edwin De Los Santos fight in jeopardy

Keyshawn Davis lost his WBO lightweight world title on the scales Friday afternoon. Davis tipped the scales at 139.3 pounds at the official weigh-in — 4.3 pounds over the 135-pound lightweight championship limit — and has therefore been stripped of his belt. His opponent, Edwin De Los Santos, weighed in at 134.7 pounds, successfully making weight. Advertisement As a result, only De Los Santos will be eligible to walk out of the Scope Arena in Norfolk on Saturday night as the WBO lightweight champion. Should Davis beat De Los Santos in the ESPN-broadcasted main event, the belt will become vacant — that is, if the fight still goes ahead. As of now, Davis vs. De Los Santos is off, according to De Los Santos' promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz. Davis' and De Los Santos' teams will need to strike a deal in the next few hours for the bout to proceed, which will require Davis to substantially compensate De Los Santos from his seven-figure purse for the infraction. Situations such as these sometimes lead to the last-minute addition of a rehydration clause. Should that be the case, Davis would not be able to weigh over a certain number at a second-day weigh-in on Saturday morning to make sure that the weight difference between Davis and De Los Santos isn't unsafe. Advertisement Should the bout be called off — or if it goes ahead and Davis wins — the WBO title will become vacant. Unbeaten prospects Sam Noakes and Abdullah Mason, who are the WBO's No. 1 and No. 2-ranked contenders at lightweight, will likely be ordered to vie for the vacant championship. Mason is scheduled to meet Jeremia Nakathila in the Davis vs. De Los Santos co-feature. In an interview after missing weight, Davis indicated that his days at lightweight are over. '[I've] been making this weight for over four years now. I just outgrew the weight," Davis told Top Rank's Crystina Poncher. "I tried [making weight]. I was up late last night. I woke up early this morning, trying to make the weight. I just outgrew the weight. I was feeling it the last time I was fighting [Denys] Berinchyk — I thank God that I made it. Y'all don't know how I was [feeling] making it. But hey, it is what it is.'

The 26-year-old Davis is widely regarded as one of the bright, young stars in boxing. After winning a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics, Davis had his first pro fight in February 2021, picking up a second-round TKO win. He won his first title in his seventh outing, picking up the WBO Inter-Continental lightweight belt with a unanimous decision win over Juan Carlos Burgos in 2022. A little more than two years later, after picking up five more wins (and a no contest for a failed drug test for marijuana), he stepped into the ring against the unbeaten Denys Berinchyk for the WBO lightweight title that Berinchyk had won in May 2024. Davis dominated Berinchyk during their meeting at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In the third round of that contest, Davis scored a knockdown via a left to the body. Berinchyk, bleeding from the nose, got back to his feet for an eight-count after that blow. However, in the fourth round, Berinchyk was unable to regain his feet after another powerful left to the body, giving Davis the title. The 25-year-old De Los Santos opened his pro career with 13 straight wins and 12 knockouts. His unbeaten run came to a halt in January 2022 when William Foster III beat him via split decision. De Los Santos bounced back from that setback with three wins (two via knockout). In November 2023, De Los Santos got a chance to fight for a title when he faced Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBC lightweight crown. Stevenson won that contest via unanimous decision, beating De Los Santos by scores of 116-112 x 2 and 115-113. De Los Santos struggled to land in that contest, connecting on just 13 percent of the punches he threw. ESPN has Davis ranked as the No. 3 lightweight behind Stevenson (No. 2) and Gervonta 'Tank' Davis. De Los Santos is the No. 14 ranked fighter according to the WBO. The NABO and NABF lightweight title fight between Abdullah Mason (18-0 with 16 KOs) and Jeremia Nakathila (26-4 with 21 KOs) will air with the main event on ESPN on Saturday night in Norfolk. Mason enters Saturday's event as the No. 2 ranked lightweight in the WBO. The WBC has him at No. 4, while the IBF has him slated in as the No. 15 fighter at 135 pounds. The 21-year-old. who turned pro in 2021 is coming into his matchup opposite Nakathila on the strength of eight straight knockout wins. His most recent victory came in April when he stopped Carlos Ornelas in the sixth-round. The win came on Mason's 21st birthday. Nakathila is ranked by the WBO at No. 11. The 35-year-old is on a three-fight winning streak. His most recent win came in November 2024 when he defeated Tafadzwa Mushando via first-round knockout. Nakathila made his US debut in 2021 when he faced Shakur Stevenson in the main event of a Top Rank card in Las Vegas. Stevenson handed Nakathila his first professional loss in that matchup, beating him via 12-round decision. The betting odds of this matchup favor Mason. Yankees' under-the-radar pitching prospect turning heads early in camp

TAMPA, Fla. — Aaron Boone nodded his head. Standing behind a screen with mesh wiring, the New York Yankees manager watched right-hander Yerry De Los Santos pump sinkers, sliders and splitters against a crew of hitters. They hardly had a chance. About 20 minutes later, when asked if any of the team's lesser-known players had stood out to him early in spring training, De Los Santos was on Boone's mind. Advertisement 'It's good to see him looking like he did when he finished the season (at Triple A) last year,' Boone said. De Los Santos, 27, could be a factor in the Yankees' bullpen at some point early this season, pitching coach Matt Blake said. The club had hoped he would make an impact in the majors last year. Early in the 2023 offseason, the Yankees signed him to a minor-league deal after he spent nine years in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. They signed him so quickly that they didn't even ask Blake for his input. 'They were like, 'This is a no-brainer for us. We really liked him,'' Blake said. 'A lot of times they'll run it through (director of pitching) Sam (Briend) or myself or we'll get a pretty good look at a bunch of guys and ideas they have. This one was like, basically, at the top of our minor-league board and we got him early. So, let's go. For me, I was confident that their process was solid in that regard.' Yankees prospect Yerry De Los Santos throws live BP — Randy Miller (@RandyJMiller) February 15, 2025 But De Los Santos stumbled early. Through his first 27 appearances at Triple A, he had a 5.79 ERA. But as he honed his splitter with the help of minor-league pitching coach Gerardo Casadiego, he began to flourish. Over his final 24 appearances, he had a 2.04 ERA. Overall, he had a 4.12 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 19 walks in 59 innings. De Los Santo debuted in the majors in 2022 and saw time back there in 2023, but didn't crack the Yankees' bullpen last season. While his mid-90s sinker has been at times impressive, his splitter could be what brings him back to the majors, Blake said. 'He added the split and then kind of fixed the split,' Blake said. 'That kind of gave him a lefty weapon. And I actually think it gives him a righty weapon, too. It seems to be like an equalizer for him. He's got the sinker that he can run in on the hands of the righties. He's got the slider he can run away. With the splitter, he's kind of neutral-handed, and that's something he could lean on a lot more, and he did at the end of last year. … He can command it, and he's got the shape he wanted. That was kind of the main focus for him.' Advertisement The Yankees appear to have a spot or two open in the back of their bullpen behind locks Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Ian Hamilton, Fernando Cruz, Mark Leiter Jr. and Tim Hill. Jonathan Loáisiga (elbow) said he might not be ready to return from the injured list until late May or early June. Marcus Stroman has said he refuses to pitch out of the bullpen for the Yankees. Jake Cousins (forearm) and Clayton Beeter (shoulder) are each considered a bit behind in their workouts and their statuses for Opening Day remain unclear. Boone thought back to what he saw out of De Los Santos on Saturday. 'Today, I thought his sinker, slider and split — all three were good pitches for him, commanding them how he wanted to,' the manager said. … I think he refined some things and had a really good second half (at Triple A) and has looked sharp so far this spring.' 50 Cent apparently finds it hilarious that Gloria Allred's client is suing him for alleged assault

To say 50 Cent isn't taking Gloria Allred's new case against him too seriously might be an understatement. Dude has been flat-out laughing in the high-profile attorney's face after she filed a lawsuit alleging that he and his entourage rode up on a scooter-riding photographer and whacked the guy with an SUV door. 'Gloria you're not gonna get any money from me that way, but if you call me I'll take you to dinner. LOL,' the rapper-entrepreneur wrote Tuesday on Instagram. An accompanying photo shows him and Allred laughing and clasping hands at an event in 2014. Apparently, Fiddy — born Curtis Jackson III — finds it hilarious that Allred is representing Guadelupe De Los Santos, a photographer and 'social media journalist' who is suing him and his entourage for alleged assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and interference with De los Santos' exercise of his civil rights. In the lawsuit, filed Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Jackson et al are accused of driving up behind the paparazzo, who previously had been tailing the rapper on a scooter and recording him with a cellphone attached to a selfie stick. Jackson is accused of hitting De Los Santos with the passenger door of the SUV a short while later, causing injuries to De Los Santos and taking the electric scooter out of commission. 'While waiting at the traffic light, [De Los Santos] felt and heard a vehicle pull up from behind him in the far-right lane. It was the SUV containing Defendant Jackson,' the lawsuit says. 'As the SUV approached Plaintiff De Los Santos, the front passenger door suddenly and forcefully opened, without warning or provocation, and struck Plaintiff De Los Santos on his left side, knocking him and his scooter to the street and adjacent sidewalk to his right.' The civil-rights part of the complaint refers to De Los Santos allegedly being prevented from exercising his California-given right to pursue a lawful occupation as a social media journalist. The lawsuit requests a jury trial and asks Jackson to pay legal fees and costs as well as general, compensatory, special, exemplary and/or punitive damages. Plus interest. The lawsuit says the photographer 'suffered injuries to his lower body on his left side as well as to his torso' and experienced 'accompanying pain and emotional distress.' Jackson, whom the lawsuit says crossed paths with De Los Santos in September after leaving a book signing at the Grove, appeared to disagree. 'The moment I realized I don't like lawyers,' he wrote Tuesday on social media next to a photo of him and Allred meeting each other at that 2014 event. He punctuated his thought with a laughing emoji, then continued, 'Gloria you should know better, chase a different ambulance.' But Jackson has lawyers too, and one of them told TMZ late Monday that the performer hadn't seen or been served with the lawsuit yet. 'However,' that attorney continued, 'if and when such a frivolous claim is filed and served, rest assured that Mr. Jackson's legal team will swiftly move to dismiss the matter and seek the maximum costs, fees, sanctions and other remedies that are available under law.'
