DePaul University students are grieving the loss of a men's soccer player found dead in his dorm room. Chicago police said Chase Stegall was found unresponsive just before 9 a.m. Monday. Stegall, the son of former NFL and CFL player Milt Stegall, grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Woodward Academy. The university says it will support Stegall's family and teammates in the coming days. It will also hold a memorial service on campus Wednesday. In an essay posted on the athletic department, Stegall opened up about a seizure his freshmen year and how his coach stayed with him for hours. 'My teammates and friends constantly checked up on me, too. They'd helped me get to the hospital, and sent me texts to make sure I was doing OK,' Stegall wrote. 'Knowing that my head coach and teammates cared about me that much was the moment I knew that DePaul was the right place for me.' He played as a midfielder in 16 of the university's 17 games last season, in one of them notching a goal against Drake University. His father played for three seasons, from 1992 until 1995, with the Cincinnati Bengals before signing with the Green Bay Packers. However, he was released from his contract following a training camp injury. Chase is the son of former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Milton Stegall, who played three seasons in the NFL before going on to have a standout career in the Canadian Football League for 14 years. Milt Stegall was a nine-time CFL All-Star and set several records, including most career touchdowns and the single-season touchdown record. Chase Stegall was a sophomore at DePaul University. He appeared in 16 games this past season, scoring his only goal of the season against Drake. He registered nearly 400 minutes on the soccer field this year after not seeing any game action his freshman year. A legendary lineage Chase was the son of Milton 'Milt' Stegall, a former NFL wide receiver and Canadian Football League Hall of Famer. Milt began his professional career with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1992 after graduating from the University of Miami (Ohio), playing three seasons before briefly joining the Green Bay Packers in 1995. After suffering a knee injury and being released, he moved to the CFL and joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers later that year. By 1997, Milt had become a standout player for the Bombers. He spent 14 seasons with the team, retiring in 2009 as the CFL's all-time leader in receptions (845), receiving yards (15,153), and receiving touchdowns (144). He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2012 and is also a member of the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame.
