‘Rich renewable resources, strategic location put Sarawak at high advantage'
Mats de Ronde KUCHING (May 6): Sarawak's abundant renewable resources and strategic location position it strongly to become a regional leader in the hydrogen economy, according to global energy expert Mats de Ronde. De Ronde, who is energy markets and strategy lead at global risk management firm DNV, also said the state has the capacity to meet its own energy needs, while exploring options such as clean hydrogen production and renewable energy exports. His comments come ahead of his scheduled appearance at the Hydrogen Economy Forum (H2EF) 2025, to be taking place held at Hilton Kuching from May 13 to 14. He stressed that while hydrogen holds significant promise in the global push for decarbonisation, unlocking its full potential will require coordinated progress across technology development, financing, and supportive policy frameworks. 'It's easy to get caught up in the hype, but we must be pragmatic as hydrogen is not the only path to decarbonisation. Planning the necessary infrastructure now, while keeping an eye on short-term opportunities, is essential. 'We're now looking at hydrogen for power generation, transport, and as a globally traded commodity. The entrance of Chinese manufacturers has increased competition, which is driving rapid technological improvements and lowering costs. 'But scaling up the market is still a major hurdle. 'Countries with strong renewable energy resources, such as China and those in Europe, are leading the way, but government involvement is crucial as they need to act as facilitators by reducing market barriers and supporting the development of shared infrastructure,' he said in a statement yesterday. As the hydrogen market evolved, he said new business models should emerge, with a potential shift from traditional point-to-point trade to more dynamic spot markets. For companies eyeing the hydrogen sector, de Ronde advised a balanced approach – one accounting for technical and regulatory risks, and prioritising markets with supportive policies and credible demand. H2EF 2025 is hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), and jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (Mosti) and Borneo Business Connect, with support from Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak). The forum aims to advance Southeast Asia's hydrogen economy in line with Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). UAE Team Emirates-XRG‘s Pogačar wins Tour de Flanders title
UAE Team Emirates-XRG's rider Tadej Pogačar rode alone to the finish in Oudenaarde to win his second Ronde van Vlaanderen title on Sunday, whose final and decisive attack on the Oude Kwaremont dispatched of his rivals with 18km to go. Also known as De Ronde (The Tour), the Tour of Flanders is one of cycling's most challenging one-day races and was first held in 1913. This year's 268.9-kilometre (167-mile) route featured 16 short but punishing climbs and several cobblestone sections. The Slovenian was on the move time and time again throughout the race, with Lidl-Trek's Mads Pedersen and defending champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) appearing to be the only riders who could follow his wheel. However, with his stinging acceleration on the third and final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, Pogačar shook the dogged persistence of Van der Poel and forged his path alone. Despite Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) forming a four-man chasing group with Pedersen and Van der Poel, Pogačar wasn't going to be caught as the world champion dug deep in the final 10km and extended his advantage to the line. Accepting that their battle against Pogačar was futile, the chasers could only sprint for second place, with Pedersen taking second place ahead of Van der Poel in third. In winning his second Tour of Flanders title, following his victory in 2023, Pogačar moves up to eight Monument victories and takes UAE Team Emirates-XRG's 24th victory of the season.

Pogacar claims impressive Tour of Flanders win
Tadej Pogacar held off defending champion Mathieu van der Poel to claim his second Tour of Flanders three-time Tour de France champion, racing for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, completed the 270km course in Belgium in five hours, 58 minutes and 41 finished just over a minute clear of Denmark's Mads Pedersen in second, while Dutchman Van der Poel came third, having recovered from a crash with 127km to Tour of Flanders, which began in 1919 and known as De Ronde, is a one-day road race and second of the five Monuments of the season, held in Belgium every spring and highlighted by climbs and cobbled sectors. "The goal was to win, but at the end it's hard to realise. I cannot be more proud of the team," said the der Poel re-joined the peloton within just 10km of his crash and tussled with Pogacar through the hills. But the Slovenian pulled away with a race-winning attack on the final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont with around 15km to go and cruised along the flat roads to a solo chasing pack sprinted for the remaining medal positions with Belgian Wout van Aert missing out on a podium finish. On 13 April, Pogacar will be taking part on more cobbled tracks for the Paris-Roubaix race - known as 'hell of the north' and another of the five Monument one-day races - for the first time, where Van der Poel is again the defending champion."Roubaix is a completely different race, but I will accept the challenge and try to do my best," added Pogacar.

Pogacar wins Tour de Flanders with another solo attack
OUDENAARDE, Belgium (AP) — Another blistering attack from Tadej Pogacar saw the world champion win the Tour of Flanders cobbled classic for the second time on Sunday. Pogacar had plenty of time to raise his arms above his head and soak up the applause of the crowd as he soloed to victory after taking off on the third and final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont. The three-time Tour de France champion had launched his last and decisive attack on the penultimate climb – about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the finish — and not even defending champion Mathieu van der Poel could stay on his wheel. Pogacar finished 1 minute, 1 second ahead of Mads Pedersen, who edged out Van der Poel in a four-man sprint for second, just ahead of Wout van Aert and Jasper Stuyven. Also known as De Ronde (The Tour), the Tour of Flanders is one of cycling's most challenging one-day races and was first held in 1913. This year's 268.9-kilometer (167-mile) route featured 16 short but punishing climbs and several cobblestone sections. It was a second victory for Pogacar after he won in 2023. The Slovenian didn't defend his title last year, when Van der Poel claimed a record-equaling third win. It was expected to be another episode of the great rivalry between Pogacar and Van der Poel, who had won the recent Milan-San Remo, and so it proved. The duo played cat and mouse with each other in the final 50 kilometers (31 miles) with each matching the other's attacks before Pogacar left the Dutch cyclist and the other hopefuls in the distance. The Tour of Flanders is one of the 'monuments' of cycling — the five most prestigious one-day events in the sport — along with Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro di Lombardia. The two Pogacar has yet to win are Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix, which has even tougher cobbles than Flanders. Pogacar is going to attempt the grueling French classic next Sunday. ___ AP cycling: The Associated Press
