Gene Hackman Death BodyCam Footage & Autopsy Not To Be Made Public, For Now
The very private Gene Hackman will be allowed to retain some of his privacy posthumously, at least for a few more weeks. Almost three weeks after the two-time Oscar winner and spouse Betsy Arakawa were discovered dead at their Santa Fe home, a New Mexico judge today granted their estate's request to seal medical records As well, Judge Matthew Wilson has sealed all police photos and video footage of the couple's bodies and one of their dogs when they were found on February 26. That was almost a week after 63-year-old Arakawa is said to have died as a result in part of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a disease primarily spread mainly by rodents' feces as state medical officials and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza revealed on March 7. revealed on March 7. Unlike what occurred in the immediate aftermath of the January 2020 helicopter crash death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his second daughter Gianna with photographs of the wreckage and the bodies passed around for days by cops and others, today Judge Wilson ordered the potentially gruesome details of what was discovered in the Hackmans' secluded home to be kept out of the public eye. Monday's order follows a filing last week from the Hackman estate's Julia Peters to respect the couple's 'exemplary private life' and Constitutional rights. Today, Judge Wilson wrote the Office of the Medical Investigator and the Sante Fe Sheriff's office 'including each entities' agents, assigns, and employees are hereby temporarily restrained from disclosing through IPRA or other means, any, and all photographs or videos containing images of the following: The body of Gene Hackman The body of Betsy Arakawa-Hackman The interior of the [MJW] Mr. and Mrs. Hackman's residence Any Label footage that includes Mr. or Mrs. Hackman's bodies Any Label footage that includes images of any deceased animals at the Hackman residence' Additionally, even with that quite vivid press conference of earlier this month, the Medical Investigator is 'temporarily restrained from disclosing through IPRA or any other means means [MJW] the Autopsy Reports and/or Death Investigation Reports for Mr. and Mrs. Hackman.' The Santa Fe County Sheriff's office, which had basically asserted this matter was nearly wrapped up two weeks ago, did not respond to request for comment from Deadline on today's order. A hearing is set in Judge Wilson's courtroom on March 31 for the police and the University of New Mexico, which runs the Office of the Medical Investigator, to argue why the now sealed images and information should not be permanently kept under wraps. The case does reflect some conflicting legal and ethical headwinds for the state, the estate and the court. Traditionally, the availability of such material as images of dead bodies and medical info is not released into the public sphere in the Land of Enchantment. However, because Arakawa is believed to have passed away suddenly due to the Hantavirus raspatory disease that she could have picked up from rat or mice droppings, there is a public health and safety element to her medical records. Usually, with other potentially at risk, such informantion is made public under New Mexico's Inspection of Public Records Act – but not here, at least not now. On March 7, New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner was very open about what had gone down in the Hackmans' home in late February. 'The cause of death for Mr. Gene Hackman, aged 95 years, is hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributory factor,' Dr. Heather Jarrell explained outside the County administrative building, noting the long ailing French Connection star had likely starved to death without the presence of his sole caregiver Arakawa alive to help him. 'Autopsy examination and a full body post mortem CT examination demonstrated no acute findings of internal or external trauma, and showed severe heart disease, including multiple surgical procedures involving the heart, evidence of prior heart attacks and severe changes of the kidneys due to chronic high blood pressure.' Having retired from Hollywood after 2004's Welcome to Mooseport, Royal Tenenbaums patriarch Hackman won Oscars for The French Connection (1971) and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992). In a career spanning four decades, Hackman was Oscar-nominated for his performances in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and Mississippi Burning (1988). Gene Hackman Died From Alzheimer's & Severe Heart Disease After His Wife Died Several Days Before
A February 27 autopsy of Gene Hackman reveals the 95-year-old Oscar winner died of a combination of 'advanced Alzheimer's disease' and severe heart disease, the Santa Fe Medical Examiner announced today. 'It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Hackman died on February 17,' Dr. Heather Jarrell said in a press conference with Santa Fe Sherif Adan Mendoza and other county officials. Hantavirus is spread mainly by rodents feces, and is not spread from person-to-person, according to the CDC The couple and one of their dogs were discovered dead and mummified in separate rooms of their Santa Fe residence at 1:45 p.m. MT on February 26, police said at the time. First discovered by maintenance workers on the property, Hackman and 63-year-old Arakawa were found on the floor of their gated community home in different rooms. A police affidavit from late on February 26 stated that as well as the bodies in the Hackman residence, there was 'another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.' The pills discovered on the scene turned out to be Diltiazem, the Tylenol and the thyroid medication Sheriff Mendoza told assembled media that the probe into the Hackmans' deaths are still ongoing, for the time being, Indicating the police were close to being finished, he noted there are some 'loose ends that we need to tie up.' Oscars Audience Up To 19.69 Million After Disney Adds Mobile & PC Viewing
UPDATED: The 97th Oscars is up to 19.69 million viewers across ABC and Hulu after accounting for mobile and PC viewing, Disney said Tuesday. That's up quite significantly from the 18.07M viewers Disney reported Monday, and it does boost the show slightly above last year's four-year audience high of 19.5M viewers. PC and mobile viewing is always accounted for in Nielsen's final reporting, though it's not usually this large of a discrepancy. More from Deadline Oscars TV Review: Conan O'Brien Nails It In Hosting Debut On A Night Of Celebration For Cinema, L.A. & Gene Hackman Oscars Exploring New TV Home After ABC's Exclusive Negotiating Window Ends Pilot Season 2025 Forecast: Drought With A Chance Of Few Orders In Broadcast TV's New Normal Disney offered the Oscars on streaming for the first time this year via Hulu, which is where much of this viewership came from. It's a pretty big win for Hulu because it showcases (much like Tubi viewership for the Super Bowl) that audiences are responding positively to live events on streaming. However, while this year's Oscar number is slightly higher than 2024, making it a five-year audience high, it's not quite the boost that might have been expected by adding a streaming component for the first time, since the show only added about 169,000 viewers year-over-year. It's hard to say whether the show lost linear viewers completely and added a significant number via streaming, or if linear viewers of the past switched to Hulu this year. It's likely a combination of both. Oscars viewership has been on a steady incline, rising heftily from the hostless 2021 Oscars, which drew an audience of 10.4 million. About 18.8M tuned in for the 95th annual Academy Awards in 2023. In 2022, the year of the Slap Seen Around the World when subsequent Best Actor winner Will Smith took a whack at presenter Chris Rock, viewership leapt up to 16.6M. RELATED: Who's to say how Sunday's audience was impacted by the multiple technical glitches Hulu viewers experienced throughout the night. The issues started early on, with reports that some users couldn't access their accounts when the show began. Others say they were kicked out of the broadcast before the last two categories were announced. There's also the sheer length of the show. At 3 hours and 47 minutes, it was one of the longer Oscars on record — but not the longest, by far, as some ceremonies have lasted well over four hours. Longer shows can be a harder sell in keep audiences engaged. RELATED: However, like last year, the Academy opted for an earlier start time this year, kicking off the ceremony at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, meaning the show stayed largely in primetime. That has certainly helped retain some of the audience who might have tapped out in previous years, when it was quite common for the Oscars telecast to go past 11 p.m. ET. This year's Oscars audience is pretty on par with other award shows recently, suggesting these ceremonies might be settling into a new normal after all of them saw viewership tank in 2020. The Grammys were down 9% this year, while the Golden Globes were basically the same year-over-year. The Emmys were a different story, up 60% year-over-year, but that audience likely took a hit at least in part because the 2023 ceremony was delayed several months due to the Hollywood strikes. RELATED: Oscars: ABC's Rob Mills On Conan, Sean Baker's Mission Statement, 'The Wiz', Adrien Brody's Speech, Luke Skywalker Saving Han Solo & Hoping To Run It Back In 2026 The 97th Oscars saw Sean Baker set a record by winning four Oscars in the same night for the same movie. His Anora took home Best Picture, and Baker also claimed awards for Director, Film Editing and Original Screenplay. Mikey Madison scored the Neon film another win for Lead Actress. Adrien Brody took Best Actor for A24's The Brutalist, 22 years after his win for The Pianist, and Zoe Saldaña of Emilia Pérez and Kieran Culkin of A Real Pain surprised few with their respective wins for Best Supporting Actress and Actor. Oscars: From Colman Domingo's Toast To Lap Dogs To Selfies, What TV Cameras Didn't Catch
Live awards telecasts like the Oscars air with commercials that take up about 15 minutes every hour, which means that we see those attending for about three quarters of the ceremony. During the remaining quarter when the cameras are not rolling, they tend to mingle and have fun. During the 2025 Oscars Sunday, nominee Colman Domingo jumped on stage during one of the commercial breaks, tequila in hand, offered a toast and engaged the audience to stand up and dance. Domingo was at the center of multiple behind-the-scenes happenings at the Oscars. This may not top Ellen DeGeneres' epic selfie from the 2014 Oscars but would come close. The five Best Actor nominees, Domingo, Timothée Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Ralph Fiennes and Adrien Brody, had become chummy during awards season and commemorated its end by gathering together to take a photo during an Oscar break. It was a big night for dogs — and that's not only because Flow won in the Best Animated Feature category. Porcelain War co-director Slava Leontyev arrived with his little dog, a Yorkie named Frodo, who had accompanied him at other award shows. Best Actress nominee Demi Moore also had her award season staple dog, micro Chihuahua Pilaf, with her in the audience. Minutes before he took his place behind the microphone as the voice of the Oscars, Nick Offerman went on stage to greet the audience, giving them 'a brief and wondrous opportunity to feast your glamorous eyes upon my sturdy form.'
