No payback this time as Jose Rizal University repeated over San Beda University, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, to clinch its first win in the second round — and their second overall — in NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
The Lady Bombers crawled their way back from nine points down in the third set to complete the sweep and reassert mastery over the Lady Red Spikers, the same team they beat in their one-win outing in the first round.
To do so, JRU rode the heroics of lefty spiker Nicole Deala and the towering tandem of Patricia Del Pilar and Kring Batara.
Deala led the sweep win with an all-around outing of 15 points anchored on 13 attacks and two aces laced with 11 digs and four receptions. Del Pilar churned out 13 markers highlighted by four blocks while Batara chipped in 11 points.
With the win, the Heavy Bombers improved to 2-14 while San Bed slipped to an identical 2-14 card. The two teams, however, are already out of contention and are just fighting for pride at this point.
That exactly what transpired for the wards of JRU head coach Mia Tioseco, who erased a 4-13 deficit in the third set to flip the switch and bag their second win of the season.
Del Pilar unleashed a quicker before denying Angel Habacon to cut the gap to three, 12-15. But Janelle Bachar rsponded from the opposite side to bring the embattled San Beda to a 16-12 cushion before the second technical timeout.
That breather changed the momentum as JRU suddenly went on a 4-0 run to tie things up at 16-all. San Beda regained a slim 18-17 cushion, but JRU once again retaliated with Del Pilar going for the quick hammer to give her side a 20-18 lead.
Deala then took off for a powerful spike that caught the scrambling San Beda defense off guard, giving JRU a 23-19 cushion before another attack from her sent the Lady Bombers to the match point.
San Beda still made some fightback with two straight points, but Deala finished it off from the left side to seal JRU's sweep win.
Habacon paced San Beda with 14 points while Bachar chipped in 12 markers.
"Super happy po kami ngayon. Mas naging motivated lang po kami manalo ngayong game and mas nag-enjoy kami ngayon," the 5-foot-11 Del Pilar told GMA News Online.
"Sila rin po kasi natalo namin last time so 'yun po 'yung naging motivation na rin namin ngayong game na dapat 'di sila makabawi ngayon."
