Doctor Who icon favourite to play Lucius in controversial Harry Potter show

The Muggle world has been set alight with rumours and fan favourite picks for who could play who in the upcoming TV adaptation of Harry Potter. HBO has already selected three young actors from the sorting hat to play Harry, Hermione and Ron, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout now on the precipice of international fame. They will be joined in the wizarding world by John Lithgow as headmaster Albus Dumbledore, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The casting news has been met with a mixed reception, given how contentious JK Rowling has become in recent years amid her anti-trans views. A number of actors have ruled themselves out entirely. There are still several key players from Hogwarts who have yet to be cast – with the cruel Lucius Malfoy among them. The current favourite to sport the straightened blonde wig and do terrible things to Dobby is none other than the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith. Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take… It's obvious where the thought behind this came from. Take one look at Matt Smith in House of the Dragon and you'll think 'Now who does this hair remind me of…?' Between that and his fiery yellow mohawk in Darren Aronofsky's new film, Smith has proven he's willing to put the hair transformation work in to get the results on screen. But would he be any good as the Death Eater? His wolfish part in House of the Dragon would suggest he could – but it's hard to argue with some of the other (perhaps better) names in play here. Tom Felton would be a wink and a nod to the original films (if he would want to return) while a gender flipped Lucius with Streep would provide a fresh dimension to the Draco relationship. Although, given that the Thrones spin-off is another HBO title, casting Smith would certainly save the props department a wig-sourcing job. The 42-year-old is currently top of a bookmaker's list of favourites to take on the character from Jason Isaacs' portrayal in the films, sitting with 6/4 odds. However, he's closely followed by Potter alum Tom Felton, who played Lucius's similarly peroxide blonde son Draco, and has 13/8 odds to reprise a Malfoy role in the TV show, according to Unlike his co-stars from the original films, Felton has not completely disavowed JK Rowling over her anti-trans views. Instead, he acknowledged the author was responsible for the franchise while also saying he is 'pro-human rights across the board' in an interview with The Independent. The next person in the list might have something of an edge, because not only do they have Isaacs' approval, but several Oscars on at home to boot. Isaacs said the Death Eater should be played by Meryl Streep, telling Variety: 'She can do anything, that woman. There's literally no limit to what she can do.' Who would make the best Lucius Malfoy? Plus, we know Streep has a villainous role in her arsenal after her terrifying turn as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, with 2/1 odds for the role. More Trending Isaacs was also asked if he had any advice for whoever is next to take on the role and questioned whether he needs to bother offering pearls of wisdom. 'I know some of the people they're casting already,' he said. 'They're brilliant actors. It's going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me.' There's every possibility Lucius won't be cast anytime soon, as the character doesn't appear in the first film. Although given that the TV show plans to be a more detailed adaptation, Lucius might be bumped up a season. View More » The Harry Potter TV show will air in 2026. Got a story? Harry Potter fans astounded as original star looks unrecognisable now

Harry Potter fans have been left stunned after discovering the new look of one of the actors who appeared in the Harry Potter film series as a member of Draco Malfoy's gang Harry Potter fans have been comparing the original cast's youthful appearances during the esteemed film series to how they present themselves today, with a clear consensus arising. A TikTok personality known by the moniker Harry Potter Lore has uploaded a video showcasing the alterations in appearances of Jamie Waylett (Vincent Crabbe), Josh Herdman (Gregory Goyle), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory). ‌ Jamie Waylett's new look has particularly captivated the Harry Potter community, with many fans drawing a comparison between him and American rapper Post Malone, as pointed out by the Mirror, reports Coventry Live. ‌ Commentary abounds, with one user saying: 'First dude turned into Post Malone. ' Another fan humorously questioned: 'Since when was Post Malone in Harry Potter?'. Further reactions include one follower adding: 'Why does Crabbe look like Post Malone now?', while another saod: 'Young Post Malone in Harry Potter?'. Another joined the discussion, saying: "The first one became Post Malone?" The buzz-making TikTok clip includes a snapshot of 35 year old Waylett donning his Hogwarts threads from 2003. Jamie Waylett achieved fame in the Harry Potter series as Crabbe, embodying the son of a Death Eater and a Slytherin House member who was entangled with Draco Malfoy's squad. His stint in Harry Potter remains his solitary foray into cinema, cropping up in six of the eight movies. However, what could have been a blossoming career veered off course into troubling territory and seemed to abruptly curtail his ambitions on screen. In 2009, Waylett's involvement in the blockbuster series was cut short after he was apprehended growing cannabis plants at his home, resulting in 120 hours of community service and a derailment from his trajectory in show business. The actor's plight deepened when, in 2012, he received a two-year jail sentence for violent disorder, having partaken of Champagne that was looted during the London riots. Although caught on camera with a petrol bomb, he was found not guilty of planning to destroy or cause damage to property. Lately, Jamie has shown signs of turning over a new leaf. He is currently spotted providing personalized video shoutouts on Cameo, the renowned platform connecting celebrities with their base of supporters and well-wishers.

Jason Isaacs: ‘The White Lotus' & His Surprising Career Pivot

Who can forget Jason Isaacs with his icy blonde 'do and menacing demeanor as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series? While we loved the way he brought the Death Eater to life, these days, he's swapping out robes and wigs for Southern Tide Polos and linen shirts while he enjoys (or tries to) a stay at The White Lotus Thailand. In the hit HBO anthology series, Isaacs brings to life Timothy Ratliff, the patriarch of a certainly unique family consisting of his wife, played by Parker Posey, a wealthy, prescription pill-reliant mom of three. Their kids, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook also possess their unique set of quirks (Schwarzenegger's character of Saxon being without a doubt the most unsettling), making for a family dynamic that is all too enthralling. While this new role is a breath of fresh air from the villainous roles he's mastered over the years, Timothy isn't entirely off the hook, as recent episodes have revealed some shady business dealings of his past coming back to haunt him. Here, take a look back at the early career of Jason Isaacs prior to his White Lotus stay. Plus, what he's said about his latest character. Before he became a face we saw acting alongside some of the biggest faces in Hollywood up on the big screen, Isaacs was pursuing law. However, this particular season of his life left him feeling somewhat unfulfilled. "I went to university and was surrounded where everybody sounded like Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley,' he told The Record-Courier back in 2015. 'I was born in Liverpool, and that was not the world I grew up in." A drunken attempt at impressing his peers led him straight into an audition for a play, persuaded by an advertisement looking for someone who could do a northern accent. When he was cast, the shift he felt was a singular experience. 'When I was rehearsing for the first time, I felt completely at home, truly comfortable and able to express myself,' Isaacs shared with Nitrate Online back in 2000. 'Not necessarily to do with the acting, but the ready-made family unit, like I belonged. It was free of a sense of class, and history, and ethnicity, and gender, almost, as well.' Though he shared that he never anticipated being on television and acting in films, the actor certainly did something right. Over the years, he has shined in countless television series, as well as films like The Patriot (2000) with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, Black Hawk Down (2001), the ever-iconic Peter Pan (2003) where he played Captain Hook and countless others. However, it was in 2002 when he first originated the part of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and it remains one of his most iconic roles. 'There was a weight of such expectation on the film. The fans are rabid all over the world,' Isaacs shared in an unpublished interview with Ed Gross in the wake of the first film. 'I was thinking of not doing it, because I was offered Captain Hook at the same time, and my friends' children called up, livid; just spitting blood, because they'd heard I was thinking of not doing it. Only because they wanted to go to the premiere and visit the set, not because they cared about my career [laughs]. But it was an absolute joy. The kids were fantastic, very skilled and seasoned. Plus I got to sit in the green room with the cream of British theatrical royalty. Just to sit in the dressing room with people like Richard Harris and Maggie Smith and watch them being made up—just a thrill.' After his Harry Potter success, Isaacs also appeared in series like Dig, Star Trek: Discovery, The OA, Sex Education, Good Sam, and has additionally lent his voice to countless animated series. These days, however, it's his stay at The White Lotus that has people talking. While his role as the Ratliff patriarch differs from his past, more outwardly villainous roles, it still required some serious preparation—in the form of reality television. "Mike [White] had asked us to watch Southern Charm, a great reality show, and somebody in it, people from Southern Charm went, 'He's clearly doing Thomas Ravenel,'" the actor told Good Morning America. "And Thomas, I am doing you, mostly, but not for two vowels, which are completely English."
