At the Africa Day 2025 event in New Delhi, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar took a veiled swipe at China's role in Africa. He criticized what he called 'extractive models of engagement,' referring to how some countries approach Africa mainly for its natural resources without supporting long-term local growth. China has built a strong presence in Africa through large infrastructure projects funded by Chinese loans. These deals often benefit Chinese companies, use Chinese workers, and leave African nations with rising debt. There's little transfer of skills or technology, which keeps local industries dependent. In contrast, Jaishankar said India focuses on capacity building, skill development, and technology transfer. India offers training programs, education, and support for local innovation, aiming to help African countries become self-reliant.
