Louise McSharry: Make a statement with these pocket-friendly scents that cost less than €100

Scent is important, and forms a significant part of the way we present ourselves to the world, but there is simply no question that those prices are unrealistic for many of us. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a few fragrance brands you might not be familiar with which are knocking it out of the park with products priced under or around €100. 1. Cra-yon (via — I know plenty of people who liked the smell of crayons as kids, and you'd have to assume this played a role in the naming of this brand developed by French/Swedish fragrance developers Christine and Niclas Lydeen. Packaged in bold-coloured boxes, each chic and simple bottle (€85 via contains a fragrance the brand says it hopes will be a 'superpower' for you, enhancing your feelings or moods. 'That's all very well, but does it smell good,' I hear you asking. Yes, it absolutely does. My personal favourite is Continental, an award-winning spicy, leathery fragrance, but I also enjoy Vanilla CEO, which, as you might imagine, has notes of vanilla as well as amber and wood. Buying fragrance online is always a bit of a gamble, but the brand helpfully produces a couple of sample kits. The Greatest Hits Kit contains five 2ml bottles of Cra-yon's most popular fragrances so you can choose your favourite, while the Mood Booster Kit contains five other options. These are also really handy to pop in your handbag for a night out. Each kit is priced at €24.86 and are available at 2. DedCool (via — Dedcool is a vegan and unisex fragrance company founded by Carina Chaz, the LA-based daughter of a beauty formulator. That background means she formulated her first fragrance at age 13, but DedCool is only a few years old. In those few years, the brand has built a lot of hype thanks to its youthful and fun vibe, as well as its extensive range of products, which include deodorant, 'dedtergent', air fresheners and more. My favourite option is Xtra Milk (€82 via which the brand says smells 'like you, but better'. With notes of bergamot, white musk and amber, I would describe is as creamy with a hint of sweetness. Helpfully, DedCool fragrances are also available in 15ml sample sizes (€27 via so you can try them before you commit to a full bottle. 3. Fugazzi (via — Fugazzi Fragrances was founded by Dutch entrepreneur Bram Niessink, who built the brand around the concept of 'storysmelling'. This is rooted in a trip he took to Egypt, where he was inspired by the story of Cleopatra enchanting Caesar with her fragrance — Niessink hopes that Fugazzi's scents will transport people to different times and places and tell their own story. Sure, but what about the smell? Well, they're great. Vanilla Haze (€95 via is a personal favourite. It beautifully combines the creaminess of vanilla with nutty notes and citrusy freshness, and the result is a calm but beautiful fragrance but doesn't overpower. If you'd like to try some options, the Fugazzi Discovery Set (€45 via contains six 2ml samples of some of its most popular scents. Buying Irish Lisa & Co is the beauty brand created by influencer Lisa McGowan, better known as Lisa's Lust List on Instagram, where she has close to 200,000 followers. Having started the brand with fragrances, McGowan has now branched into makeup, but the product which got me hyped when it came through the door was Lisa & Co's Brush Soap (€19 via I love tinned soap for cleaning makeup brushes. I find it easy to use and it minimises mess. You simply wet your brush, swirl it around in the tin and then rinse. Something old… The first tinted moisturiser I ever heard of was by Laura Mercier. At the time, I couldn't wrap my head around the concept. The idea of tinted moisturiser felt like a bit of a nothing; it didn't feel like it would have enough impact on my face to make it exciting. These days, tinted moisturiser is exactly what I want — something that simply helps my skin to look the best it can, and tinted moisturiser is great for days when I feel like it doesn't need much. Laura Mercier's is still the product I turn to. These days, the brand has several options in its Natural Skin Perfector Tinted Moisturizer (€47.46 via wardrobe — the Natural Dewy formula, which delivers its classic natural finish; an Oil Free version; and the latest version, Blurred Matte Oil Free, ideal for those who are concerned about shine. ... Something new There's a reason Bobbi Brown is one of the most famous names in beauty. She already built one massively successful brand, and now she's doing the same with Jones Road, her latest project. Brown believes in enhancing natural beauty, rather than changing the face or covering it up, so it makes total sense for Jones Road's latest launch to be Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer (€50 via This formula is light and comfortable, and beautifully evens out the skin tone by neutralising redness and other imperfections. The result is enhanced skin which doesn't look like its wearing makeup at all.

10 perfumes that won't trigger your fragrance allergies

A perfume containing the ingredients above isn't necessarily a red flag—a lot of people can still wear them safely without experiencing adverse reactions. However, allergies are tricky, and if you're predisposed to them, it's better to play it safe with perfumes that have fewer potential irritants. Another thing to note: organic or natural scents don't necessarily guarantee an allergy-free experience. Noses are unpredictable and unique, so follow yours. 1. Henry Rose (All scents) Founded by Michelle Pfeiffer, Henry Rose is one of the first fragrance brands to be both EWG (Environmental Working Group) Verified and Cradle to Cradle certified. Every ingredient is disclosed and vetted for safety. Scents like Windows Down and Last Light offer fresh, subtle blends suitable for daily wear. 2. DedCool – Fragrance 01 Taunt DedCool combines bold branding with gentle formulas. Fragrance 01 Taunt is a clean blend of vanilla, amber and bergamot, created without parabens or phthalates. The brand uses biodegradable ingredients and water-free formulations. 3. Phlur – Missing Person, Somebody Wood Phlur's scents are IFRA-compliant and formulated without known allergens, parabens or synthetic dyes. Missing Person is a soft, skin-like fragrance, while Somebody Wood adds warm, woody depth without overwhelming the senses. 4. Ellis Brooklyn – Myth, Salt, Après Created by a former beauty editor, Ellis Brooklyn perfumes are clean, vegan and dermatologist tested. Myth is a crisp white musk, Salt captures a mineral seaside feel and Après evokes a wintry forest with smooth, woody notes. 5.
